i know.

but i was here when you first came to the forum, and i had hoped then too that you wouldn't just disappear
- a lot of people come to Christian forums (not just this one) in unbelief, with searching, piercing questions -
and often aren't really well received by the believers - and then they are gone in a few days for whatever reason.

you've been coming regularly for over a month, and that makes me glad - it shows you're not here just to scorn or troll, but to genuinely think & discuss philosophical and spiritual things. to me that's pretty cool, and i appreciate your point of view.

does that make sense?

Yes, tho it makes it seem like you care more about what i add to the forum than me as a person. which, even if that is so, its understandable altho rather empty.

When you're asking for help, it might be a good idea not to be critical of the people who are trying to in fact help you.

Sorry. I'm naturally cynically critical. I'm always honest with my answers. That is what my mind thought so that is what i typed.

And i know i shouldn't say everything that pops into my head and i don't. If i did that, i would be banned by now.

But if someone cannot handle my scrutiny then maybe they should not talk to me. just sayin.

And i do appreciate the effort to help even if it does not always seem like i do, but of course things are not always as they seem.

i understand how you can see it that way,
but you could also see it as that i appreciate your honesty and the honorable way you interact with everyone here - in that you could see that i respect you as a person, and that "what you add to the forum" is secondary.

like you said though, i don't really know you - but i'm cynical too, and i guess if we were trading places i would probably react the same way to what i said. it's because i'm cynical that i expect everyone who questions God to be hostile and unreasonable in a setting like this christian chat forum - and because you're not, i'm happy you haven't thrown up your hands and left the website or lost your temper and ended up banned.

Arcynaculr. You're here because God placed you here. He knew you before you were conceived. As you can see I'm 50 years your senior. Depression was part of my life for many of those years. I as well often wondered, "Why am I here?". Today I'll pray that God takes your depression away from you as He did from me and then you'll know the power of prayer.

Depression is a widespread condition, affecting millions of people, Christians and non-Christians alike. Those suffering from depression can experience intense feelings of sadness, anger, hopelessness, fatigue, and a variety of other symptoms. They may begin to feel useless and even suicidal, losing interest in things and people that they once enjoyed. Depression is often triggered by life circumstances, such as a loss of job, death of a loved one, divorce, or psychological problems such as abuse or low self-esteem.

The Bible tells us to be filled with joy and praise (Philippians 4:4; Romans 15:11), so God apparently intends for us all to live joyful lives. This is not easy for someone suffering from situational depression, but it can be remedied through God's gifts of prayer, Bible study and application, support groups, fellowship among believers, confession, forgiveness, and counseling. We must make the conscious effort to not be absorbed in ourselves, but to turn our efforts outward. Feelings of depression can often be solved when those suffering with depression move the focus from themselves to Christ and others.

Clinical depression is a physical condition that must be diagnosed by a physician. It may not be caused by unfortunate life circumstances, nor can the symptoms be alleviated by one's own will. Contrary to what some in the Christian community believe, clinical depression is not always caused by sin. Depression can sometimes be caused by a physical disorder that needs to be treated with medication and/or counseling. Of course, God is able to cure any disease or disorder. However, in some cases, seeing a doctor for depression is no different than seeing a doctor for an injury.

There are some things that those who suffer from depression can do to alleviate their anxiety. They should make sure that they are staying in the Word, even when they do not feel like it. Emotions can lead us astray, but God's Word stands firm and unchanging. We must maintain strong faith in God and hold even more tightly to Him when we undergo trials and temptations. The Bible tells us that God will never allow temptations into our lives that are too much for us to handle (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Although being depressed is not a sin, one is still accountable for the response to the affliction, including getting the professional help that is needed. “Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that confess his name” (Hebrews 13:15).

It seems there is a type of depression that can't be treated.

i wouldn't worry about that kind.

Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

It is
better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool:

this also is vanity.

You have a purpose. If God didn't have a purpose...you would be dead. EVERY SINGLE HUMAN has a purpose. We all have diffrent purposes and ways God will use us for...but God gave you a purpose all the way back in Genesis. Life is Christ and once you find him...you'll find the reason you're here.

I felt the same way as you once...but Christ...he gave me hope...he gave me a reason to live, I'm only sixteen but I could never see a life without Christ because on my own, I just wanted to die, I begged God just to take me away, but he gave me hope.

God isn't mysterious either...if you want to know your purpose...seek him and I promise you...He'll tell you.

Man, Don't walk around doing nothing, that's what the devil wants for people to walk around without a purpose...without a destination...just wasting space.

I don't know you...but I'll pray for you and Don't give up!

You're here. Enjoy your life while it lasts.

Sometimes, you need to stand back and just appreciate being alive, for the ability to feel love and joy.

if that's the price of wisdom, yes, wisdom is worth more than happiness or feelings.

i don't think that all love and happiness is the actual price of wisdom - but i do believe this:

For with much wisdom comes much sorrow;
the more knowledge, the more grief.

(Ecclesiastes 1:18)

i think Solomon was terminally depressed - quote Ecclesiastes to any psychologist and you'll probably be booked for bi-weekly sessions and a bucket of pills for the next 10 years - but i don't think he was totally without joy, or without love.

true love can hurt a lot in the short term, and turn into a lot of joy later.
there are a lot of things in the world that make people superficially happy, but to a wise person that sees through the charade it sickens their stomach even to see others enjoying it.
and if that wise person sees one other person that also understands - that's a happiness that comes much less often, but is better than the sum of all the happiness of the fools before.

There are many people here who are offering you friendship and love. No, we don't know each other personally. But, it is possible to form loving friendships on the internet. Two of my closest and dearest friends are women I met on the internet.

If you could let down your guard a little, I think you might actually find a friend or two here. I know you don't think any of us can truly care for you but, we do. I have read all of your posts and I get the impression that you do want people to care for you and love you. We are all God's children and He wants us to love one another. We are here for you if you would just give us a chance.

As far as happiness.....are you saying there is nothing that makes you happy? I often find true happiness in the smallest things. Hand-picked flowers from my husband, a thank you from a student for teaching them, a compliment from a co-worker......just little things.

I wish I had the words to help you with all that is going on in your life. I know that turning to God helps me. Reading the bible or talking to my pastor, husband, or member of my church family when I am down also helps.

God Bless, I am still praying for you.

Read John's Gospel and John's First Epistle, in which the theme of 'life' is very important and you will see that it is very blessed for those who love and trust the Lord Jesus.

Tosca:

If I may say so, some of your examples of simple expressions of love, are quite touching. Also, the subjects of the Bible and prayer, which you mention, are central to good advice, indeed.

Blessings.

I believe that there are people that need your help in the world, you just need to figure out what. It can be simple as saying hi to someone who decided to rethink whatever sin they were going to commit or something technical like helping someone speak English. It gets tricky but after awhile you will start to see clearer as to what needs to be done.

Thank you so much. Your words brought tears to my eyes. I am still new to Christianity and cannot quote scripture like others can but, I can talk about how much I love God all day long:)

YW, but try reading Philippians with its theme of joy running through it. You'll need plenty of Kleenexes... :)

Blessings.
