Fun facts about catfish, that is the actual animal.

Catfish are bottom dwellers & bottom feeders.

A catfish will eat just about anything, dead or alive, as long as it's small enough to fit the mouth.

Catfish feed only at night.

sooooo......both types of catfish are creepy then...

The "electric catfish" (Malapterurus electricus) can generate 350 volts, which is enough electricity to kill a human adult.

Word to the wise. :)

You're so Vain

Carly Simon, 1972

You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht

Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner, and...

You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't You?

You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me
I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and...

You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't You? Don't You?

I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and...

You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't You?

Well I hear you went up to Saratoga and your horse naturally won
Then you flew your learjet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well you're where you should be all the time
And when you're not you're with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and...

You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't You?

Years ago, not long after Bob Dole invented the interwebz, I frequented a teachers site, as that was my profession at the time.

One of the ladies there had some hard luck story about financial hardships, cancer, etc... She (at least she portayed herself as female) got plenty of attention and sympathy from everyone on the site, until someone became suspicious and checked things out. Her story was proved to be fraudulent. I have no idea what her motives were -attention, I suppose.

As for romantic relationships, I can't fathom developing serious feelings before meeting in person.

Absolutely! Like totally agree with you.

Check this out.

Some peeps have been on CC for years; they are popular in forums; easily recognizable in chat. They've been in-and-out of romantic LDR, yet to-this-day aint nobody seen them nowhere!

Yeah, they each have a photo from years past ready to present, but they never show their face on video neither can you ever get a hold of them at work. You are to believe them, love them of course, only through the story they create in your mind.

It's all an online illusion.
As the Lord Jesus said, "Why do you not understand what I am saying?"... ...sighs...

I do have a hard time with Madam Elusive and Sir Incognito. These peeps only exist in the story they create in your mind. They are well rehearsed deceivers; don't be deceived.

"Why do you not understand what I am saying?" (John 8:43) :)

I've always thought it would be neat if someone reverse catfish'd someone. Usually the victim falls in love with the catfish and then finds out they are not as much of a catch as the seemed. But what if they created a fake identity that was worse than themselves, using uglier pictures, worse job, poor etc.. Then, if for some odd reason you actually meet them (as they do in the show) you find out that they are actually not at all what you thought (catfish component) but instead are way better (the reverse catfish).
hmm.. "reverse catfish" just isn't catchy enough though. maybe dogfish. or seagull. seagulls are kind of graceful, but they poop too much.

Well, the whole point of the catfish is to never be identified. LOL.

A catfish has multiple stories tied to multiple alluring job "experiences" she's never had. This is the sole reason why you never can call a catfish at her work: 'cause she ain't never been there!

maybe i'm just too old to understand the idea of creating a false identity on line. the person could never actually meet someone because the identity would be revealed. if internet status is that important it would seem that some people need to turn off the computer and take a look at the world around them.

BINGO! :D

A catfish is usually comfortable using audio means to create her story in your mind, but the classic catfish will,
a) never be seen live or on video, and
b) never be reachable at work.

This was a really good thread. And it's very useful for if I develop a meaningful friendship with a lady friend and want to meet her in person.

I don't know if I've ever been catfished, but I know two men who were. My friend from long ago created a match.com profile. And he talked to like three women who all had the same story - and they would ask him to get on messanger, OFF the site. That is a red flag too, I think, when someone wants you to go off the site immediately and displays an immediate romantic interest. And they all had the same story of having lived in Africa and stuff. They ended up asking him for money. He wasn't that dumb, but their grammar and spelling, like you said was really bad. But many people online are lazy in writing good English - so you can't rely on that clue alone.

The other guy was actually looking for love too, and he got really interested in a few girls - would give them the directions to the airport so he could pick them up (individually of course, as he was interested, I think, in one at a time) and then they would cancel on him. His wife had died a few years before, and he really wanted companionship. But after a few deceived him, he got bitter - and would lie to others online on his messager list in a sort of vengeance for what happened.

Both these men were in their 50s, and naive about the dangers that lurk online.

I think some places are crawling with more catfish than other places. These men, it seemed they just attracted these predators. I think the sites you go on, and how you friend the person (on messenger and such) has something to do with the probability of running into one of these scumbag catfish.

I met my husband on Facebook. And I probably opened up to him too quick, and he was the one who asked me after we'd been talking a while "Hey look, I got a business trip to go on to SC this weekend, and I was thinking about swinging up to WV to meet you. Do you want to do that?" My husband however, used correct grammar and spelling, even punctuation, which even I'm too lazy often to put a period at the end of my last sentence in instant messages.

We didn't Skype before we met, except in audio. I didn't have a cam at the time, and maybe I should've asked him to video chat with me first, even though he couldn't see me, but I didn't know much about Skype as I rarely used it. He told me he was booking a hotel to have a place to stay while he was in WV - he didn't ask to stay at my place, he just assumed that he may not be welcome. We met in public, and actually, he said later that if I had suggested to meet at my place for the first time, he would've been uncomfortable with that and refused.

I didn't have a car, and went by bus to where we were going to meet. Maybe hopping in the car with him after only talking to him an hour was a mistake that could've cost me dearly - but I was comfortable with him. Maybe it was unwise to hop in the car with him and go 900 miles to spend the summer with him, when he'd only spent three weekends with me. But I did. And I got to see his environment, and everything was as he told me - he co-owned a small business, he lived in his mom's large house, there was Branson Landing that he talked about - it was all true. I took crazy risks (though he's not the first I have), but I lucked out. He proposed to me, just like he said he thought would likely happen.

I have done some pretty stupid stuff online. But for my Facebook, I do not post my number or address. I'm very transparent online. I used to go in chat rooms regularly years ago, and do dating websites, in which I would post semi-personal information. I've added quite a few people to MSN Messenger, and the Yahoo and AOL Messengers alike. There were a few that I met that I talked to for a significant amount of time. I've met a few men in person that were only one date, and I met a few in person that I ended up in a relationship with, or was already in relationship status.

I think it's possible to fall in love online. I know a woman who got engaged to a man she hadn't even met yet! I think that's a but extreme (but each to her own) - my husband and I had hopes of hitting it off, but we didn't fall in love until we met in person. I have fallen in love before I met the guy, but really, you don't have a real relationship until you connect in person. I firmly believe that.

I think it's possible to fall in love online. Yes, of course! The Lord God Jesus has never been limited by cyberspace to bring godly people together. :)

As a matter of fact, there are several saints here on CC who met here on CC and have already married, or are currently engaged. The Lord has a great sense of humor to beat the odds all the time.

...but really, you don't have a real relationship until you connect in person. I firmly believe that.
I firmly believe that also! This is precisely why it's bizarre when peeps get romantically involved and they never, ever see each other live: video or IRL! That's a catfish for ya!

If the Guy doesn't have a might fine, sparkling diamond whatchamacallit to give you IRL, then he ain't got no business messing with your heart, does he? ...and if that Gal never shows her face live after you've attempted to meet her IRL, then she's catfishing you big time! ...just saying.
:)

LOL. You're sweet, and I can vouch for that, Kim!

Okay, dear Peeps, so Yours Truly is having a jolly ol' time with this topic, but frankly, it's not a laughing matter. It's bizarre behavior at best; it's abusive at all physiological & psychological levels.

Worst of all is that catfishes are very friendly, amiable blokes. The "friendliness" is precisely their disguise. The girly catfishes are all like, pleasantly aromatic to whatever flavor amuses you. It's not like the catfish will come out to inform you, "Hi, I'm Apple Scrudle. I'll catfish you if you let me, okay?"

I just don't understand the depths of their darkness, drama and constant manipulation to draw attention to themselves.

It's like "oh, you foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you?" or whatever. :)

Actually its the amps that kill. You can take 100,000V with pretty much 0 amps and be just fine (think static shock/ you know touching the door knob) but a 9V batt has enough amps to kill in the right circumstance

This seems like as good a place as any to remind folks that behind some smiling faces in photos/on cams, sweet talk and "pious" posts are individuals you would never expect to have a history of psychotic episodes, domestic/non-domestic abusers and/or individuals with other criminal histories. Even a pedophile or two. Even on CC, as many of us know and some of us have learned the hard way. Obtaining such information is not as difficult as one might think; but it is important to gain it via legal means, as there is a line between verification and stalking/harassment.

If an online relationship is on your list of "must haves", please at least take your time and be very careful about sharing too much too soon. These things don't always show up right away and/or you may not want to see them when they do, especially if you are already emotionally invested.

MATTHEW 10:16 - "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves."
