Reading from Psalms

Getting something done on my "list" so that I feel like I've accomplished something.

Play the piano - Debussey calms me.

Puttering around in my patio garden

Escaping to the beach once a quarter

Petting friendly animals.

* It's going to sound childish, but I've found that flipping through books or magazines with colorful pictures is very soothing. I also like watching travel shows of places I would love to see but for now, can only dream about.

* I go through these modes of craving new knowledge but needing to get through it in a very short time. Would you believe, I check out kids' books at the library and read through 4 or 5 in order to feel like I've accomplished something?!! The even more embarrassing part is that when it's about a subject such as science... I have to read the book twice to feel like I comprehended anything!

* I love going to a place I haven't seen before, and often it's something simple like a store I've never been to. I also love looking at houses--I'll go for a walk and enjoy seeing the various types of architecture and decor people choose for their personal living space.

* Having jobs in which many of the motions become automatic can be an unexpected blessing--this is when I get most of my prayer time and talk to God about everything going on around me.

* I love to waste vast amounts of time on the internet. I don't watch much TV, but the internet is (borrowing from another thread) my hamartia.

* Unfortunately, my #1 favorite relaxing activity is eating... and it can only go downhill from there!! :) (Because we all know that eating a plate of celery isn't exactly calming...)

Why is it that only the creamiest, fattiest, or sweetest foods seem calming?!

I first read this as "I also love cooking in houses." And in my mind, I added "...I like to break in while the owners are a work, make them a nice casserole, and leave it on their counter for them to find when they return home."

P.S. I think the magazine thing is pretty cool - not childish at all. And if it is...who cares? :p

Are you CRAZY, Cat??!!!

If I make the effort to break in, find everything, make myself at home, AND cook a real meal...

I'M TAKING IT WITH ME. EVERY LAST MORSEL. THEY'LL NEVER EVEN KNOW I WAS THERE, THOUGH THEY MIGHT WONDER ABOUT THE LINGERING SCENT OF MAC'N'CHEESE IN THEIR KITCHEN...

I'm not letting all that work go to nothing!!! :)

Since I always forget and end up leaving a few out...

Here's some other things I find calming:

Walking. I just love to walk. Especially walking and talking.

Baking. I like baking stuff. That can be really calming between the preparing, eating, and the wonderful smells. I'll even hand mix things when I can.

Reading action-filled adventure books is another. I can't read many other kinds of books.

Curling up into a recliner and watching a movie. Maybe with some popcorn or a couple of (gluten-free) cookies. :D

I'm also a paint- peeler, but there isn't any paint to peel here , so

Sitting on a hill and watching the view
If warm: Lying in the sand on the beach, just feeling the heat of the sand seep into me (and watching the waves)
Listening to the rain puring down

if I can't get out: Vampire movies :p

what do you find calming?
Music!

I play the music that suits my emotional state and mood at a specific time...

Most therapeutic!

something i've always found interesting are the (oft unique) things that others find soothing.

i once knew a girl who would pour a giant bowl of lucky charms whenever she got rattled. a guy friend of mine will watch a certain sketch comedy show.

i've got my own semi-quirky rituals, and i'm sure many of you do too.

aside from God, your friends and family, what things or activities do you find calming?

p.s. thanks to bananapie for inspiring this thread
Walking around the park on a bright, sunny day.

- To take stuff apart and see how it works, and then (trying) to put it back together. Mom says I've been succeeding at the first part since I was little [...poor typewriter]. Didn't get a handle on the second part until............

- To shovel snow (this is a recent one)

- To mow the lawn or dig out weeds or cultivate the soil.

- To rake/sweep falling leaves.

...hmm apparently any work that has to do with using my hands, where I'm able to focus my thoughts on just one thing. I'm at peace.

- Thunder. Thunder's particularly soothing especially when it's close and frequent. I can just sit in silence and listen to it.

- Rain. Torrential Rain is calming. I'm secretly excited when clouds form and actually a little disappointed when it only drizzles. Still...a drizzle is better than nothing.

I'd be more than happy to let you come shovel here :) Especially after this storm is over! (12-18 inches)

There is something peaceful about stopping.
Try this. When walking, just stop and pause and say a prayer in your heart... especially if it is in front of a New York taxi. :p

Seriously, though, this has calmed me on several occasions.
If you recognize that your moment, hour, and day-- and everyone else's-- is in God's hands,
it simmers the felt stress. It centers, refocuses, realigns one's reason for doing or being.
If you are wondering, God-- God is why we are here...why we do... why we pause to give God praise.

OOPS:
I did not see, God, cannot be one of the calming things.
Ummm, I like to play the piano, find chords, and I like to play songs in discord.
