I've wanted to get a tattoo on my right calf of roses in the colors of my childrens birth month colors with an angel baby laying on them. But when I was a teenager my mother and father told me that getting tattoos or anything dealing with altering your body, even piercings, is a sin against God. So I talked with my pastor last year and he told me that I have to ask myself 3 questions. Does the tattoo subject go against God (ie--is it about death, devil, or any sins, ect)? How do I feel about tattoos personally? And What does God say to me personally and in the bible about tattoos? But I've yet to find anything in the bible about tattoos so I'm confused on that question. I personally don't mind tattoos as long as they aren't going against religion. I've met a lot of people who have some meaningful tattoos. But I just don't know. So...I want to hear from others.

What do you think about getting tattoos? Is it ok or not ok? And do you have any tattoos yourself and what are they about?

ummm, for me to get a tattoo i would think firstly is the tattoo for me to have a better appearance. if it is then in my view it a lust of the flesh.

if the tattoo is to respect something i believe in then, perhaps the tattoo is warranted.

Definitely not for appearance. I don't think anything can help me there lol. But you bring up lust of the flesh...I mean...don't we do that every day when people put on make up and dress up to go to work? In a world where looks matter because it's "professional". You bring on more questions for me than answers lol.

To give a good valid reason,i will say this,
Tattooing one's body is against God's will...
There are several verses in Holy Scripture that points to defiling one's body, tattooing is one of them..
That is personal enough to not do it.

And you must not tattoo,as it will be yourself personally violating God's will...
Now you know it.
If you feel the temptation for doing it,that altogether another issue.
Pray to God to remove of such desires.
God will help you overcome such temptations..

Better not do it than doing it enjoying it,because tomorrow it will be hard thing to get rid off when finally you realize that its a sin.God's words do not change.
God Bless:)

First off be blessed for asking this question. God's Word does have a few other approches to this problem. Some of them have been stated already. But it does say that if one thinks it is a sin then it is a sin to them. That would cover something that is not talked about in God's Word. One day the Bible does say I will stand, at the Judgment seat of Christ and Gods going to ask me what I did and why I did it. You see I'll be standing in front of the one whose eyes are like fire, and I can't get over on Him. That is what one must have in mind before one does anything to ourselves or anybody else for that matter.

Hi there! For the believer in the Lord Jesus, the emphasis should first and foremost be on the inward and the spiritual rather than on the outward. Also, if something is tattooed or pierced, for modesty to be retained.

Re. your parents' advice, they were giving their preferences and at one time it was certainly right to follow them.

But for example, the idea that all piercings are supposedly wrong: does your mom not have pierced ears? (Ezekiel 16.12 records the Lord giving earrings to Zion and even a nose ring.) But piercings are maybe a side-issue; I think your main question is about tattoos.

Leviticus 19 speaks about not cutting for the dead or printing marks on the body. The main context here is pagan necromancy, although the verse is sometimes read to mean in all contexts. Interestingly, the next verse says about not trimming the corners of one's beard; do preachers shave? In terms of exegesis, is one asserting that the New Testament believer is under the law, rather than under grace, if one tries to use this verse to refer to tattoos? These are all things that are sometimes discussed. Romans 14 also speaks of Christian liberty.

A lot of Christians get faith based tattoos because they are proven effective in witness, as conversation-starters.

I love folks who pull out Leviticus verses on stuff. if you are going to keep some and ignore some, what is the message?? tattoos are not sinful if they are not anti-God or pro sin.

But still, does the fact, that we don't follow one command means that we can despise all of them?
Or in other words, what is criterion for you?
I mean what should be criterion for us?

Because when we look at Leviticus 19
there is also
Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood: neither shall ye use enchantment, nor observe times.
Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore
Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God

....

I think that when it comes to definitive damage of our body as the temple of God, we should follow this

If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

1 Cor. 3,17

As it goes for hair or beard, they will grow, so it is not definite damage (Samson?) but tattoo is much permanent, although …

Ok.. nevermind…

Sorry for multiple posts

Be blessed :)

So you really say that, for example, a Christian fish sign <>< on a wrist for witness purposes defiles the temple of God? I would have thought that it's moral and spiritual defilement that is involved in 1 Cor. 3.17; immoral practices, etc.

My mother now has a tattoo and has for 10+ years. Everyone is getting tattoos. And as far as the spiritual and inward, if you always focus on that then how will you ever focus on the outward appearance of being professional and making sure you could ever keep a job or get one. There is a time where I dedicate to my spiritual walk with God and a time where I focus on the outward because if one always focuses on the spiritual and inward...then how would we be able to take care of our families and homes?

And if everyone wants to take all this literally...women shave their legs and arm pits. I surely do. Men shave their beards. I have pierced ears but I rarely wear earrings. We get our hair cut..and some wax their legs, arms, and what not. But back to tattoos. I've just always wanted one and I have children and want to make the tattoo about them with their birth colors and an angel baby sleeping on the flowers. I just wanted an interesting discussion and not a serious biblical debate.
