I just remembered a couple of verses that I think answer this question far better than everything I've presented so far.
Ecclesiastes 1-2 which says:
I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards...I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces...I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before me. In all this my wisdom stayed with me.
... My heart took delight in all my labor, and this was the reward for all my toil.
Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had doneand what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;nothing was gained under the sun.
... So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind... To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
To get the point across, I have removed some chunks, please feel free to read the verses in their entirety, and I think you will find that I have not twisted them.
Make God happy by obeying Him, and following His will instead of your own, and He will give generously.
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
