You’re seated in a small room with a table in front of you. On the table is a tray of puffy white sweets that most of us know and love ---- Marshmallows.

A man shows up and explains that he is going to leave the room for a few minutes. While he’s gone you can ring a bell to summon him back and then eat a treat. Or you can wait until he returns and then receive two Marshmallows.
The test is supposed to measure a person’s ability to exchange short term pleasure for a better long term outcome.

Daniel decided to put off the pleasure of his “daily ration of food and wine” (Daniel 1: 5) from king Nebuchadnezzar’s kitchens in order to honour God.
It’s like that the king’s kitchens produced mountains of roast meat, loaves of warm bread, jugs of top-notch wine and towers of cakes dripping with honey. However, “Daniel was determined not to defile himself” by eating the king’s comfort food (Daniel 1: 8) Notice Daniel was determined.

As captive in Babylonia it must have been hard to say “please pass the spinach” when the king’s delicacies were being offered (Daniel 1: 12)

Some bible commentaries presents the idea that Daniel refused the food because it had been offered to idols or that it was a way of staying separate from the Babylonian culture. Whatever the reason Daniel’s self-restraint honoured God.

The lord blessed the brave young man and his friends with aptitude in their Babylonian studies, and Daniel was able to interpret visions and dreams (Daniel 1: 17) What’s more he and his fellow dieters looked healthier than the men who feasted on the king’s food (Daniel 1: 15).

The next time you face a test like Daniel, consider the long term result of the immediate pleasure. Honouring God in this life is what matters most in the long run………………

Nice analogy, if a little anti-climactic. (I was hoping for a real punch line...lol) But your point is well made. Instant gratification is huge in this world and the reason for most, or at least a lot of our weight problems, unwanted pregnancies, debt, diabetes and plastic surgeries.

Patience is one of the Fruits of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22) for a reason.

M Scott Peck wrote a best selling book called "The Road Less Traveled" about this. One of the illustrations in the book was of a boy who spent his money on a wonderful car when he graduated from High School instead of college, so he had to take lower paying jobs for the rest of his life and could not have the cars he wanted after his one car. That money spent on college would have earned him many cars.

The entire law of Moses is about this very thing. We may gratify the lusts of the flesh and become a person who will not go to Christ for eternal life.

Now if someone refuse to eat the unclean it will likely be classified as self righteous dishonoring Jesus instead of self-restraint honoring God...

I think we can learn from daniel about honouring Jesus.
============================================================

1JOHN 2:16.
For all that is in the world - the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life -
is not of The Father but is of the world.

GENESIS 3:6.
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, (lust of the flesh)
that is was pleasant to the eyes, ( lust of the eyes)
and a tree desirable to make one wise, (pride of life)
she took of the fruit and ate.
She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

so we see from the beginning........

MATTHEW 4:4.
But He answered and said, "It is written, man shall not live by bread alone
but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God." (conquering the lusts of the flesh)

vs.7.
Jesus said to him, "It is written again, you shall not tempt The Lord your God."

vs.10.
Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you satan! You shall worship The Lord your God,
and Him only you shall serve."

so thanks be to God that He will never lay upon us more than we can bear.

Food that you drop in the dirt:)

5 second rule! :P

And I love this thread by the way... I think a lot of people misunderstand this concept and then see Christianity as a restriction or a "DO NOT DO THIS" kind of religion... thus feeling like freedom is taken away etc. However, what you say is true. More and more, I find freedom in self control rather than feeling like I am imprisoned by it. Indulging oneself in pleasures can lead to many consequences, and in the end, you find yourself trapped in it.

What food is unclean today?
the Food that comes out of our mouths. You think, just for once that when people post a thread. that people could actually stick to the theme? or thread lol I dont mean you personnally, But people in general. lol They just love to derail a thread huh. LOL Makes you laugh really, But thats people for you.

John 4:31-34
[SUP]31 [/SUP]Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” [SUP]32 [/SUP]But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” [SUP]33 [/SUP]So the disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” [SUP]34 [/SUP]Jesus *said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.

In regard to people changing threads, some have a one track mind and others are reminded of things through comments, thought they are not necessarily "directly related".

My dad, to me anyway, has a "one track mind", while I, on the other hand, am sometimes/frequently catapulted into thoughts that are connected in my mind, but to the hearer/reader seem unrelated (and honestly, sometimes the thoughts aren't exactly on topic). But to be fair, you brought up food - a sugary food no less.

But I do agree that we are driven by instant gratification and selfishness (America is really bad about this). Give me, give me, give me. I am bored. Road rage - "go, or get off the road; You may not have to be anywhere, but I do." Me, me, me. And this is not just the "worldly", but our fellow "Christians". And I will admit, I have said and/or thought the road rage comment listed above.

Many sit and complain to others that they do not have any money for food or rent or whatever....through texts, emails, and internet chat on their I-Phone.
