I always find movies and stories about this subject to be quite fascinating.
In "Surrogate" with Bruce Willis, everyone can choose a synthetic surrogate human body controlled by their own minds to represent themselves in everyday life so no one knows what you truly look like (as we all sit here behind our screens... you have to think we're not very far off from that.) You could choose whatever race, gender, age, or interpretation of "beauty" as you saw fit. Everyone choose surrogates that were the most attractive. But an interesting thing happened during the movie. Bruce Willis's character wants to interact with his WIFE, not her surrogate (which is all she lets him see), and he comes to a point where he longs for "the woman behind the door" (seeing as she stays locked up in her room)--wrinkles, scars, flaws, and all, instead of the perfect presentation she refuses to get go of.
On an episode of the unfortunately cancelled television show "Almost Human", there is a strain of human beings known as "Chromes" that are supposed to have been genetically engineered perfection. Every "box" is checked and such humans are genetically designed without flaws and at the top of their game, from intelligence to beauty. In this particular storyline, a Chrome boy falls in love with a "Natural"--a girl without any genetic engineering, which is seen as being someone inferior and meant for low-class work.
Regarding his attraction to her, the boy says, "When you're surrounded by perfection, you come to appreciate the beauty in flaws," which I thought was a very profound statement.
I love little quirks like a crooked tooth, sprinklings of freckles, scars that tell a story, a walk that isn't quite balanced, etc. While I agree that society is definitely very choosy and prejudiced in what it considers to be attractive or not, I'm sure that what God finds beautiful has a much wider scope than we could ever imagine. (I see this myself as I've moved to different areas of the country and am blown away by how unique each landscape is. Sometimes I find it hard to compare the beauty of a forest full of trees, especially when the leaves have changed color in the fall, to something like a patch of barren desert, but God must see it all as beautiful. I'm sure He feels all that much more about human beings as well... though I know it's hard. God finds us all beautiful, but it often seems very few other people do.)
