The only thing that I find to poor etiquette about people choosing to use the ignore feature is when they post a response in the forums that says, "UserX you are now on my ignore list". I mean does the entire site (or even that one user) really know that you put someone on ignore?
Sometimes people mistake the "Ignore" function as a weapon against the other person.

Henceforth, the "big announcement": "Oh yeah??? I'll fix YOUR wagon. I'm putting you on Ignore!!!"

Um... ok. Should I say "thank you"?

I'd assume the mod would contact you privately with that warning. Which leads me to wonder if people on your ignore list can send you messages or PM you in chat.
Depending on the situation we may use an "official" warning via the infraction system other times we do so via forum private messaging. You will not receive CC mails from users on your ignore list, but the ignore feature does not extend to chat since they are two loosely connected but separate systems. I'm honestly not sure if the ignore feature extends to the point of blocking Mod/Admin messages but I'm sure it does since it is possible to customize your settings to not receive CC mails from ANY user including Mods/Admin.

Sounds like someone has tried :p
She's right, I just confirmed this with another user. I had them try to ignore me and they got a pop-up message saying "Oncefallen is a moderator/Admin and you are not allowed to ignore him or her"

Likewise I looked at the setting page for private messaging and although you can turn off the CC mail system it does not disable messages from Mods/Admin.

You learn something new every day. :)

Precisely. They use it as a way to get in the last word, and not allow the other person to say anything to them afterward. Like typing out a parting shot in chat, then quickly leaving chat. Basically the way of a coward.

Sometimes having someone deem you worthy (or unworthy) enough to land on their Ignore list can feel like winning a (CC) Nobel Peace Prize... ;)
This really made me laugh....I am so worthy? Unworthy?.....lol Do I get my Prize Now?

Does that mean we just have to ignore you the old fashioned way without the help of these newfangled buttons? :p

The other users in the Bible Forum would probably collectively have Him banned.

After all, that's what the Pharisees did.

Well I've been given the honour of being on many people's ignore lists :)

However the interesting part is that the people who did put me on ignore lists and publicly announced it are on quite positive terms with me now.

So I assume this is a transient aspect of any heated discussion.

I believe even a moderator had me on ignore at one point of time.

The said moderator referred to me and another user as "Thing One and Thing Two" from Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat.

It was hilarious.

I actually count those times as "The Golden Times" of my forum tenure.

Was I offended when they announced it? Not at all. Did I care? Not at all.

It made my day really! :p

That is a very standard function automatically built into forum design within the PHP, but can be disabled if desired by the forums owner.

You have helped Administrator this website for around 3 years and was unaware of those simple facts.

There is an ignore button???

Just kidding, there is and only ever has been one on mine and it was due to a thread and an ensuing private message conversation which in my view was solely used to stir-up controversy and bad feeling.

Pretty much............

Just because I'm an Administrator and have access to a lot of stuff that other users don't have access to doesn't by default mean that I know everything about how the system works. RoboOp is the founder/technical brains behind the site and he has access to controls that I don't. My position (and 1Still_waters) is more one of behind the scenes (and some not so behind the scenes) management than technical. :)

I have never put anyone on ignore in the forums, but I do it multiple times a night in the chat room. If people can't be respectful enough to read my private chat notice and follow it, then I don't feel they deserve the courtesy of an answer from me.

Yes, if there is a serious moderator request, I will listen and do what I can, but when it's a guy from a middle eastern country (not saying everyone from that area is bad, but I would say the majority of pm's I get are from that area) who only wants to talk to me because I'm a woman who shows up on the list, then no, sorry, it's not happening.
