Many people bicker over this topic. This is not my intention so whatever comes out in the thread after my question, is on you and you alone. I am just learning myself, so be kind. You got to learn too..

I've grown up being taught baptism was a public profession of faith, yes. Sorta like it being an outward showing of what happened on the inside when we invite Jesus into our lives. So on so forth. But I've noticed something weird. My one question is where at in the bible do we come to this conclusion that it is what Christianity teaches baptism to be? Where is baptism said to be just a "symbol"?

Maybe I'm stupid not seeing it??

When one is buried in a watery grave and raised up from that water grave and resurrected to walk in newness of life is symbolic of Christ's burial and resurrection, Rom 6:3-6.

But water baptism is not just symbolic and nothing more. Water baptism is the means God has chosen to save man.

You posted that baptism is "Sorta like it being an outward showing of what happened on the inside..."

Col 2:11,12 "
In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead."

When one is water baptized a circumcision made without hands (spiritual circumcision) takes place where God does the work of cutting way the body of sin. Therefore this spiritual circumcision where sins are cut away by God does not take place on the inside until one is first water baptized outwardly.
No walking in newness of life until one is water baptized.

[Note also how Col 2:11,12 speaks of a "burial" that one is "risen" with Christ]

Luke 3:3 states that John came “preaching baptism in symbol of repentance for forgiveness of sins” ,“baptism conditioned on repentance” (CB); “baptism whereby men repented, to have their sins forgiven” (Kx); “baptism in token of repentance for the forgiveness of sins” (NE); “Turn away from your sins and be baptized, and God will forgive your sins” (TEV). Baptism did not wash away their sins, but the repentance and changing of their ways did, and of this, baptism was a symbol.
The baptism performed by John was therefore not a special cleansing from God through his servant John, but a public demonstration and symbol of the individual’s repentance over his sins against the Law, which was to lead them to Christ. (Ga 3:24) John thereby prepared a people to “see the saving means of God.” (Lu 3:6)

I could tell you the way I believe. But, honestly I would suggest that you study and pray about this on your own. Ask anyone in CC and you'll get different answers. Here is a freebie... In Acts 2:38 when Peter said be baptized FOR the remission of sin... The word "for" in the original language is the word "eis" which means 'because of'... be baptized 'because' your sins are forgiven.

The words LIKE FIGURE and LIKENESS.......as applied unto baptism and a rejection of what the words actually mean by those who teach a watered down blood.

The bible teaches when I see the blood I will pass over you<--picture of Jesus and it does not say when I see the blood, water and works I will pass over you

The fact that every time the word immersion is used it is not always indicative of water, but also applies to the Holy Spirit

Jesus was a SON of GOD by BIRTH and NOT by BAPTISM

The misuse of the word SAVED and it always being applied unto soul salvation

Paul's statement about being sent to preach the Gospel and NOT being sent to IMMERSE..

Heretical teachers who tie salvation to the public profession of faith which is immersion....

Taking scriptures out of context, while denying words in context to teach water salvation....

Ignoring 30 or 40 to one scriptures that teach faith, grace based salvation void of works and water....

People teaching the views of men as opposed to what the bible actually teaches...

No, this is not what εἰς means.

Amen and add this to post 5 as I forgot this one.....which is also overlooked and rejected by those who teach water salvation.

I believe that you nailed it. Baptism is a profession of faith and not a requirement of salvation.

It looks to me that JesusMyOnly is wanting to know what bible verse says water baptism is just a symbol and nothing more.

Really? I'm sincere about that. What IS the correct meaning then? I'd prefer to look stupid temporarily and be embarrassed the remain ignorant.

I looked the word up in my Theological Dictionary Kittle, Friedrich and Bromley and it has a half a dozen different ways it can be translated which are.... in view of, because of, more commonly used in the N.T. in which an action is preformed with a view to or of some end.... etc.

Let me challenge you to find a reputable Greek scholar who will go on record to translate εἰς as 'because of'. εἰς is never, in any passage of scripture, translated in a retro direction. It is always forward.

Well, there are a number of internet tools available. The one I prefer is biblehub.com.

Hmmm, I'll give that a look see. But, anyway. Now I'm curious... what about the thief on the cross... he wasn't baptized at all... yet Jesus said that he would be with Him today?

What do you think of Strong's concordance? I have one but seldom use it... print's way to small. Actually, it was given to me and I am not too familiar on how to use it.

First, let me ask you what possible difference this could make since the thief died while still under the Old Law?
Second, what makes you think he was not?

Don't worry thay will argue he isn't an example of N.T. salvation........
