Just curious, what do you understand "repent" to be? I'm asking because God is said, in the Bible, to have repented several times. Did God "repent" of sin?

I'll answer your question with another question, what do you think "repent for the kingdom is at hand" means?

A lot of threads in the Bible room have good intentions. But the same ones turn into a lets see who can sling the most mud and verbal insults thread. As far as calling the OP names, if you go all the way back you can see her heart has been in the right place. Stuff like that is why people have a problem with Christians.

No certainly is no reason to call the OP names.I also look at the age of someone posting and adjust what I'm saying to be more gentle. We need to be careful of what we say when things get heated no matter what we believe.

Haha, actually that seems to be something that God likes to do. Like in the book of Job, He asked satan questions over telling him whats up. I like that quote "Christianity is a thinking mans religion". God is all wise, I think He prefers to get you to think things through over just forcing it on you :p It is neat how He works.

There have been a lot of references to only God's love on this thread, and that is great. But I think often people forget that God is multifaceted. Here are some reminders of those facets of the God we serve:

Matthew 10
32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But
whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.
34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a
sword.
35 For I have come to turn
“‘a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—
36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.'
Luke 12
49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a
baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! 51 Do you think I came to
bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division
. 52 From now on there will be five in one family
divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father
against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law
against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
Genesis 19
12 Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone you
have in the city, bring them out of the place. 13 For we are about to destroy this place, because the
outcry against its people has become great before the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it
.”
14 So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, “Up! Get out of this
place, for the Lord is about to destroy the city.” But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting.
Genesis 19
23 The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar. 24 Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah
sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven. 25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and
all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 26 But Lot's wife, behind him, looked
back, and she became a pillar of salt.
Revelation 1
9 I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that
are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of
Jesus. 10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet 11
saying, “Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and
to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.”
12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden
lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and
with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow.
His eyes were like a flame of fire, 15 his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and
his voice was like the roar of many waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth
came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead.
Revelation 19
11 Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and
True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his
head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a
robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. 14 And the armies of
heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses
. 15 From his mouth
comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron.
He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty
. 16 On his robe and on his
thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords
.
Romans 1
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men,
who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them,
because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and
divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things
that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him
as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were
darkened.
22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God
for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their
bodies among themselves
, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and
served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural
relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations
with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and
receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what
ought not to be done
. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness,
malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers,
haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish,
faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice
such things deserve to die
, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
2 Corinthians 5

6 Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. 7 For we live by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

Dear brother, you show yourself to have an amazing amount of integrity and I am grateful to you for sharing as you do, but this time it seems as though you tripped up a little. Out sister is only 20 years old and she's spending time on a Christian chat site in an attempt to gain wisdom and understanding. You might want to cut her some slack. Just saying.

Just typing.

It means change your mind about how salvation comes to us, and follow God's will, which the Bible says is "that we believe on God's son."

While you're just typing, remember, you have 25 more years of life experience than she has. That's 25 years of dealing with adversity and the ability to have grown thick skin because of it. I'll say it again, cut her some slack and be the Christian you claim to be.

Repentance means to change your mind about the sins you walked in that cause you to be enmity to God.
Then that change of mind will lead to Godly sorrow making one turn away from those sins and not walk in them any more, and have you walk in the Spirit. We must produce works and fruit worthy of repentance, which means not making the attempt to stop walking in them is not a true repentance.

So both of you are saying God sinned, and had to change His mind about it? (since the Bible absolutely names times that He "repented"... and used that exact word.) I'm sorry, but I can't buy that.

A preacher who died back in '95, Curtis Hutson, wrote this... (I can try to find the full article for you if you can't.)

Facts About Repentance
There is a vast difference between what men think the Bible says about repentance and what the Bible actually says. Here are a few facts about "repent" as it is found in its various forms in both the Old and New Testaments. The word "repent" is found forty-five times in the King James Bible; "repentance" twenty-six times; "repented" thirty-two times; "repentest" one time; "repenteth" five times; "repenting" one time; and "repentings" one time - a total of 111 times in both the Old and New Testaments. The word in its various forms is found forty-six times in the Old Testament and sixty-five in the New. Of the forty-six times the word appears in the Old Testament, twenty-eight times God does the repenting, not man.

For instance, in Exodus 32:14 the Bible says, "And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people."

In addition to the twenty-eight times that God repents in the Old Testament, there are nine other passages that tell of things about which God does not or did not repent. Of the forty-six times a form of the word "repentance" appears in the Old Testament, only nine times is man doing the repenting. Thirty-seven times it has reference to God's repenting or telling us of things about which God did not or will not repent.

Now, if "repent" means to turn from sin, we have a problem. We have God turning from sin, and that is certainly inconsistent with Bible teaching. God is sinless and has no sin to turn from. But if "repentance" means a change of mind, then it is consistent. You have God changing His mind about some things, but you have at least nine things in the Old Testament about which God says He will not change His mind.

Now that makes sense. There are many things about which I would change my mind, but there are some things about which I will not change my mind. For instance, I will not "repent" or change my mind about the fact that the Bible is the Word of God. I will not "repent" or change my mind about the fact that Jesus is the virgin-born Son of God. I will not change my mind about the fact that salvation is by grace through faith. And there are other important matters about which I will not "repent" or change my mind.

On the other hand, there are some things about which I would "repent" or change my mind. I may plan a certain activity next week, but before the time arrives, I may change my mind and decide to do something else. As a matter of fact, my wife says I change my mind often; and she is probably right. I have said that I have a clean mind; I change it often. But there are some things about which I will not change my mind.

No, God did not sin.So simple. He repented, was sorry for....

Repented meaning...view or think of (an action or omission) with deep regret or remorse.

No sin involved in that case.Obviously.

Second meaning of repented ....

feel or express sincere regret or remorse about one's wrongdoing or sin

Anyone have a word study on this?

Read the (partial) article I just posted. The full article will tell you a lot about the "words" you seem interested in. Shouldn't be hard to find since I posted his name.

Already seen it myself thanks, could post for others.Still doesn't change the meanings I wrote.Still doesn't change the fact that sinners need to repent. Its a terribly silly argument.Remorse for sin,repentance.Simple.Change your mind.Go another way.

No God did not sin, as His repentance was about His change of mind to destroy a certain person or place.
He had a change of mind to not issue out that punishment on them. For us the repentance is toward the sins that we walk in because they make us enmity (separated) from God.
In order to be reconciled to God we are to have faith in our Lord Jesus and follow what He said, and part of that is repentance of sins and baptism in Him as a sign of a clear conscious to accept His ways to lead our life.

Repentance is a change of mind about anything.
It does not have to be necessarily sins as I previously stated, as it refers to what the issue the repentance is meant for. As I posted previously for God it was do to the destroying of a person or place that He changed His mind (repented) of and decided not to destroy them.
In the case of us it is of unbelief and sins that we repent of, and the Lord makes it clear that if this repentance is not done we will still perish in our sins.
