This is something that people from both genders do, but I wanted to mention it, as someone recently really made my day (or week ) by doing this .
It's very helpful to be specific in one's compliments. This friend mentioned something I had done months ago that had helped him calm down, and I found it very motivational to be told that it had been helpful, though he had thanked me at the time as well. He mentioned another time that women help men calm down really well, and it makes me feel like my femininity isn't being wasted, for lack of a better way to phrase it. As in, my being female is still helping, even though I'm not married and could just as easily be male (easier, some would argue =P). Most of us like to know that we're assisting others in one way or another in life especially if it means that we ourselves have a harder time as a result.
