Hang in there, Gabe. Only 24 hours in a day, and less than 12 are left.

So this lady came in to have her taxes done today, and there was already a lot of confusion because she was Eastern European and she didn't always use the right English words for what she was trying to say, but more than that she acted pretty rude and entitled. If she were had actually been paying for our time, I would've understood, buuuut this is a free volunteer service. She kind of harassed me to a point where I was a bit flustered and having difficulty finding certain forms that I needed to find to enter in her information and said she might just leave at that point, and I was so hoping she would lol. But alas, she didn't. She was pretty condescending too, acting as though she could clearly tell that I was new at this.

Eventually my professor rescued me a bit. She wanted to claim some business expenses that she had no documentation for, and we can't just submit information that we don't know for sure is actually accurate, so he told her she would be better off filing on her own if she wanted to take those things, and so she finally left.

I have to think there's a reason why she acted that way other than sheer arrogance, but it doesn't really matter. I just want a nap now :p

One of my big beefs about working with the public is how entitled so many people think they are. And, when asking for help, they always assume they know more than the person they're seeking to help them. I appreciate polite, patient customers because they're a rare breed these days.

Several years ago I went with some friends to serve in some soup kitchens, which was something I'd never done before. I was amazed, in a bad way, at how many of the patrons, who WERE RECEIVING A FREE MEAL, put up a fight at every turn. they complained because we had chicken and they wanted ribs. They complained because they wanted to be able to help themselves to everything (an extra this, an extra that) but because supplies are limited (it's a soup kitchen, not a freaking buffet, people!), everything was rationed to feed as many people as possible. They argued as if they were in a 4-star restaurant and expected to be waited on hand and foot.

My friends, who have worked with the homeless for many years, told me that's the secret behind many who are homeless--not all, of course, but many--believe they are too good to be working for anyone and won't take any kind of direction, which is why they don't have jobs, and of course, in turn, are homeless. I'm certainly not knocking anyone who has fallen to hard times, but I know for me, it was a life-changing experience. And I was in awe that my friends, after many years of seeing this, still serve every person with a genuine smile and a warm heart.

I live in an area now where panhandlers actually fight over the "good corners" and you often see the same people there everyday. I sometimes get to talk with a woman who works in local social services that regularly talks to and serves the homeless here and she said that many of the people they try to give care packages to refuse them--because they don't have the "right" kind of products or exactly what they wanted. She told me about one man who refused their help because they were giving out a free hygiene pack with a 3-blade razor... and he insisted that he only used 4-blade razors, and only a specific brand.

Sigh. I've come to believe that a good percentage of people's problems, including poverty, isn't so much a matter of money, but rather, pride.

Which is something I have to remind myself of as well because when my attitude turns south, I'm probably not very far from turning into the same thing.

My word, I've been having disturbing dreams, lately. The kind where, like I said in an earlier post, feelings stay with me for the day.

Last night I dreamed that me and another girl were in a house at night. We were running from a skeleton creature in a black hooded robe. We ran into a room and hid on opposite sides. He walked in, then flew over to me, grabbed my face, and, eyes glowing green, growled, "You're lucky you have friends on the inside" and then he turned and took the the other girl.

Ugh, brain, if you're gonna make stuff up while I'm unconscious, can't it be nice?

The quote of SKs post is supposed to be here...

I wish I could like this but I'm on my phone sitting in a hospital parking lot. The waiting room is full and it's been over 3 hours and I got told off by someone begging fo change who dropped the f bomb on me and I have cold and a runny nose and it's too hot to sit in the car. Other than that everything's peachy

It's funny that you say that because the thing that got my professor going a bit was that she was telling him what she could deduct. He said, "Wait, you're telling me that you can deduct that?" It's possible that may not have been her intention and she was having trouble communicating again. But he said to me afterwards that one thing he really doesn't like is when people tell him how things are done when they come to him for services. She did backtrack a little, though, and said that her employer told her she would be able to.

I wonder too if she behaves like that because she deals with the frustrations all the time of trying to communicate like that and it's made her very attitudey (the word of the day!). But either way I'm home now and prepping to chill out this evening.

I decided not to go to Bible study because I feel like I'm nearing burnout and I have an exam on Thursday that I won't have sufficient time to study for unless I start on it tonight.
