Zoi,

I really understand your point of view. There are many abusive people in the world; and I think they are contemptible regardless of gender.

I believe that a person who prayerfully asks the Lord to guide and approve his/her choice of marriage partner; they will NOT wind up in an abusive relationship.

I agree fully that marriage should indeed be an equal partnership. I believe that God's plan for male leadership is ONLY about who takes the heat when mistakes are made.

It should have NOTHING to do with domination

So if a Christian woman gets abused it's her fault because she didn't pray enough or correctly? To be honest that is what it sounds like you are saying. Please really think before you respond to this because your response could wind up hurting a lot of women on this forum.

Oh I don't remember what page it was at but am I women after all? I was interested as to what the other person would respond lol

Marc...the truth is that guys are very good at telling potential mates exactly what they want to hear....and they even believe it themselves and they want all the things they say. Then the reality of the hard work it takes to to have a good marriage sets in.....life happens, and the next thing it's a one down one up relationship and people are getting hurt. This is what unprocessed hurts do to a marriage. IMO......it's all about processing pain and emptying the wheelbarrow of sorrow that many carry around without knowing about it.... and marriage will open that pandoras box every single time......and If God ain't truly in the picture it is always a train wreck.

I certainly agree with you! That is why I believe that it is essential to ask the Lord to ratify or veto our choice BEFORE making a commitment; and be open to acting on His veto, if that be the case. I believe that most believers do NOT invite the Lord to exercise that level of involvement; and I believe they should.

Marc, the more I think about this OP, and this thread, the more vehement I become about how wrong it is to copy and paste, to present Scriptures out of context, and how wrong some of the assumptions are especially by the men on this thread.

Let's see - if you prayed before you got married, and God said yes, then you will have a good marriage. I know women who prayed and had others pray and thought God said yes, and then ended up in a nightmare marriage with a selfish, mama's boy who would not lift a finger, and never put his wife first once, despite his supposed commitment to Christ. We won't even get into the abuse some of them have suffered at the hands of pastors, deacons and men who are supposed to be servants of God.

Then there is that infamous passage from Ephesians 5. Somehow, everyone wants to start the passage at Eph. 5:22. But Eph 5:21 is part of Paul's train of thought.

"submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ," Eph. 5:21

The rest of the Ephesians 5 passage is very relevant, as a household code in Greece or Rome, to teach men to treat their wives in a totally different way than that culture. The passage is written to men. Oh yes, the earliest manuscripts don't even have the word "submit" in Eph. 5:22, by the way.

I also hurt for the women who are single, who are being told the only way they will fulfill their "role" is to be married! It demotes them to something less than married women, which is contrary to Scripture. Paul tells people if they are able, it is better to be single!

"
But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is good for them if they remain even as I." 1 Cor 7:8

As for those who were in marriages, which they prayed about, and ended up getting abused, then living in poverty when they sought to get out, like Misty testified to, I have heard this story over and over again.

I am blessed to have a wonderful husband, but my eyes are open to the truth that a Christian marriage needs to be accountable to God by both spouses. We each stand before the Judgement Seat of Christ to answer for ourselves. And I personally don't think a good answer is "Well, my husband made me do it!" It is demeaning to women to suggest that they are accountable to a husband, rather than to God.

Jesus Christ is the one who has been given authority. Because of the bad translation of 1 Tim. 2:12, many men have somehow come to think that they have authority, and a woman is to be under them.

"I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet." 1 Tim. 2:12 ESV

"διδάσκειν δὲ γυναικὶ οὐκ ἐπιτρέπω, οὐδὲ αὐθεντεῖν ἀνδρός, ἀλλ’ εἶναι ἐν ἡσυχίᾳ." 1 Tim. 2:12 Greek

The key word here is αὐθεντεῖν or authentein. It is an infinitive, which in the case of the ESV and most translations, means that you actually have to add a verb, such as "usurp" in the KJV or "exercise" in the ESV. The word "authentein" is a verb, whereas "authority" is a noun. In fact, the word exousia ἐξουσία, is the word for authority, and is found in such places as Matt 28:18 where Jesus tells his disciples that he has been given ALL authority.

"And Jesus came and said to them,“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." Matt 28:18

In fact, "authentein", used in the 1 Tim. 2:12 passage is a hapax legomena. That means that it is only used once in the Bible. Therefore, we have to look to contemporaneous sources to find a definition of this verb. There are actually over 50 different words used in extra biblical sources when translating this word. But the one that comes up the most, is "to dominate." Therefore, a women is not to "dominate." Given the culture in Ephesus, with the temple of Artemis, the kinds of rites and rituals and the dominance of women, Paul had a definite reason to write this phrase. He did not want the former priestesses of Artemis to be dominating their husbands. A far cry from the authority of men over women for all times. Or even husbands over their wives!

In the garden of Eden, there were no roles. As believers, we are not instructed to live out the Fall, with its roles and consquences of sin, daily in our marriages. Instead, we are to support and help one another. Eve was not a "Helpmeet" or "helper" as many translations say. Instead, God created her to be an equal partner, an "ezer" who was a warrior. God did not create a weak and submissive woman that Adam would have to take care of for the rest of his life. God created a woman who was his equal, his partner and someone who could help him fight in the battles of life. Yes, even in the Garden of Eden.

I have taken the time to study this extensively in the original languages. God's plan is NOT for a woman to be a door mat, or for the man to have authority over her. Only Jesus has that authority! As for submission, Eph. 5:21 says it all - we are to submit to each other!

Angela,

If this is indeed the case; then I admit that I am mistaken; but if this is the case then I must rethink my belief in the efficacy of prayer.

Many people indeed ask God to bless their marriage without inviting God to veto their marriage. In some cases God can not bless a marriage because it is outside His will. Asking God's blessing on our choices is not the same as asking God's active participation in making the choice.

If you ever met my wife you would laugh and laugh.

Meek and passive. This doesn't characterize my wife in the least.

There is no such thing as equality. It only exists in your mind. We are all different. We all have our strengths and weaknesses and they aren't exactly like anyone elses strengths and weaknesses. If we were identical we could be equal.

In a relationship one person is better at cooking than the other. One person is better at working on the car than the other. One person is better with finances than the other. One person makes more money than the other. One person is more emotional than the other. One person wants to fight more than the other. One person wants to make up more than the other.

There is no equality. There is only Love.

I think there are many excuses made on both sides of why they can't be a certain way. Eventually, you will see that the biblical way is the best way. For peace, for joy, for love, for everything good.

Great post!! all so very true

my husband sometimes says that love is a choice...I sure wasn't brought up that way

But acts of kindness and consideration go a long way...how you feel about it, may not be so, but a positive action...a move towards the cold heart of the other (even in friendships) starts to melt the ice

Marriage is work...it is not one long honeymoon

Me.

My best friend. A friend's little sister. A friend's mom. And many others.

Misty,

If that is truly the case; then I am indeed mistaken; but if that is true then I need to rethink my belief in the efficacy of prayer. and my position on the authority of Scripture.

Very often believers will ask God's blessing on their marriage without inviting and being open to accept God's veto on their marriage; and God is unable to bless the marriage because it is outside His will.

Asking God's blessing on our choices is not the same as inviting God's active participation in making our choices.

Did you really invite the Lord to tell you to break it off before it started.

I'd say if you date a man and he prays with you every day for a whole year before he even thinks about jumping in the sack...marry that guy. Marry a guy who is actively involved in a church fellowship and accountability group. Interview his friends and family. Run him through the ringer. If he is a godly guy he will stand the test.

So if a Christian woman gets abused it's her fault because she didn't pray enough or correctly? To be honest that is what it sounds like you are saying. Please really think before you respond to this because your response could wind up hurting a lot of women on this forum.

If a woman is abused it is NEVER her fault that she is abused.

In my opinion it is inexcusable for any man to intentionally hurt a woman or child physically or emotionally.

the only possible exceptions are:

A man may exercise minimal restraint to prevent himself from being seriously injured.

Reasonable and moderate discipline of a child is not, IMO, intentional hurt.

I still believe that very often believers fail to involve God in making our decisions. Asking His blessing after we make a decision is NOT the same thing.

Is prayer going to make the Lord provide you a robot, somebody who will never stray? Free will, that can be disobedient, goes out the door? If so, by what fairy dust? God vetoes bad matches, if you use the right approach, some invitation with RSVP? You seek the Lord's guidance, most go to pre-marriage counseling, just for the pastor to get an idea whether the marriage should be performed, but, for some technicality of not explicitly inviting a veto, the Lord turns His back? Is there any believer, who enters a marriage in good faith, who is going to be opposed to God squashing what will become a wrecked marriage? Are all these failed marriages among Christians then the result of not having the right prayer mojo words? Isn't this a lot like saying, to say the innocent party, a person is sick, because of sin? A bit of Job's friends there? What are you saying to already brokenhearted Christians who did their best, but had a spouse that failed them, down the line in their marriage? They weren't up to the level of your holiness, that God would hear them?

If you have an unfailing procedure and prayer that ensures behavioral fidelity of two people, in perpetuity, or gets one of them into a fatal car wreck before the marriage, maybe you need to provide this, then, let's get it out to all clergy and just put an end to bad matches. Tell you what, I've seen the debris field of a lot of Christian marriages, and please don't tell me one or the other wasn't really saved or not really seeking a Godly marriage, that they may as well have cursed God and died.

Putting the responsibility on God like that isn't fair or honoring to God......then we can argue that we had faith and that we prayed but God let us down. The fact is that we are responsible for us and us alone and that includes the choices that we make in life. No matter how much you pray and how much faith you have...people will let us down because we are all sinners. Abuse sucks... and people who perpetuate it on others are selfish cowards and there is no excuse for it....but we live in a fallen world and anything can happen...even to people who are faithful in their walk with Jesus.

No cmarieh

you did not attack me...my comment about snapping my suspenders was meant to be funny, but I was serious about you stating I had attacked you

truthfully? I am not sure what you actually believe...but there is nothing to forgive...I understand that you became defensive...no worries we have probably all been there at one time or another...

I am not offended...I want women to stand on their own two feet and use their minds...emotions follow...there is so much I could say...but again, I do not really know you and I really am not sure exactly where you are coming from

If you can see this, I was responding to the op...not to you personally and I think the questions were designed to get you to think independently...not to accuse or make fun

I value understanding and I think that might be what you like too?

So, if you can, maybe participate and i will try to listen better?

no worries....you are not offensive...defensive yes...but not offensive

Ember,

I truly apologize if I came across as attacking you and that was never my intention at all. When I originally posted here I posted what came from my heart and the way I believe and we can agree to disagree with that belief, but I felt like I was put on the spotlight that I was the one twisting scripture and that really bothered me and felt that I needed to stand up for myself on that. However, I do apologize to you and to anyone else who was offended by what I said. I just want what I said to be of some value, if that makes sense.

Please forgive me

Every father of a daughter on the planet would probably like that approach, even if it wouldn't ever yield any grandchildren. (You forgot to add the hands. Check the hands, for nail scars.)

I know that it goes without saying but at the risk that my views on sex are not clear....the safest best most God honoring kind is that which happens between people who are married. If it happens before that, it opens a whole other can of unseen worms as far as abuse goes....think in terms of how Davids son hated his sister after he raped her. Premarital sex is a lot like rape in my opinion...esp at the rate guys manipulate there way into bed with women thru various means.

Actually, think about the pop culture, music, movies, the way everybody talks. "Love" is a buzz word for lust, not remotely related to agape. "Feed me."

No doubt....it's easy to be carnal when it's all around you and it tempts every base desire in us.

For me this is not about the role of women. for me this is about the credibility of Jas 1:5

5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
KJV

If we come to the belief that God's word is unreliable; then there is no basis for faith!

If we come to the belief that God's word is reliable; then it must apply to Women's Role as well.
