  • "And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power," (2 Thess. 1:9).
  • "Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example, in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire" (Jude 7).
  • These men are those who are hidden reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you without fear, caring for themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, doubly dead, uprooted; 13 wild waves of the sea, casting up their own shame like foam; wandering stars, for whom the black darkness has been reservedforever," (Jude12-13).
  • Matt. 3:12 says, "And His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." (See also Luke 3:17.)
Mark 9:43 says, "And if your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled, than having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire." The word "unquenchable" is asbestos in the Greek. According to the enhanced Strong's lexicon, it means "unquenchable, the eternal hell fire to punish the damned."
The following citations are from Greek dictionaries and Lexicons. They show that the word "unquenchable," which is asbestos in the Greek, (which occurs only in Matt. 3:12, Luke 3:17, and Mark 9:43) means unquenchable, without end.
    • "unquenchable, inextinguishable"2
    • "not quenched"3
    • "pertaining to a fire that cannot be put out" - "unquenchable."4
    • "unquenched, unquenchable"5
    • "that cannot be put out"6
    • "inextinguishable"7
Is hell eternal? Yes it is. Are its fires without end? Yes they are. Is it a pleasant doctrine to discuss? Not really. But, hell is real. This is all the more reason to preach the gospel. Jesus said,
"And if your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the eternal fire," (Matt. 18:8).

The punishment of the wicked dead in hell is described throughout Scripture as “eternal fire” (Matthew 25:41), “unquenchable fire” (Matthew 3:12), “shame and everlasting contempt” (Daniel 12:2), a place where “the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:44-49), a place of “torment” and “fire” (Luke 16:23-24), “everlasting destruction” (2 Thessalonians 1:9), a place where “the smoke of torment rises forever and ever” (Revelation 14:10-11), and a “lake of burning sulfur” where the wicked are “tormented day and night forever and ever” (Revelation 20:10).

The punishment of the wicked in hell is as never ending as the bliss of the righteous in heaven. Jesus Himself indicates that punishment in hell is just as everlasting as life in heaven (Matthew 25:46). The wicked are forever subject to the fury and the wrath of God. Those in hell will acknowledge the perfect justice of God (Psalm 76:10). Those who are in hell will know that their punishment is just and that they alone are to blame (Deuteronomy 32:3-5). Yes, hell is real. Yes, hell is a place of torment and punishment that lasts forever and ever, with no end. Praise God that, through Jesus, we can escape this eternal fate (John 3:16, 18, 36).

    1. Undying Worm and Unquenchable Fire (OT)
    Isaiah 66:22-24
For as the new heavens and the new earth
    that I make
shall remain before me, says the LORD,
so shall your offspring and your name remain.
From new moon to new moon,
    and from Sabbath to Sabbath,
all flesh shall come to worship before me,
    declares the LORD.

And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.
    2. Everlasting Life/Everlasting Contempt
    Daniel 12:1-2
At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
    3. Eternal Fire/The Fire of Hell
    Matthew 18:6-9
Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes! And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell of fire.
    4. Eternal Punishment/Eternal Life
    Matthew 25:31-46
When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” . . . Then he will say to those on his left, “Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fireprepared for the devil and his angels. . . . And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
    5. Undying Worm and Unquenchable Fire (NT)
    Mark 9:42-48
Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, “where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.”
    6. Everlasting Destruction
    2 Thessalonians 1:5-10
This is evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering—since indeed God considers it just to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might, when he comes on that day to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at among all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed.
    7. The Punishment of Eternal Fire
    Jude 7
Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.
    8. Blackest Darkness Reserved Forever
    Jude 13
[These people are] wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever.
    9. The Smoke of Their Torment Rises for Ever and Ever
    Revelation 14:9-11
If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.
    10. The Lake of Fire
    Revelation 20:10, 14-15
And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. . . . Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

“Wait a minute,” you protest, “what about all the biblical references to eternal flames and everlasting punishment? Doesn’t Matthew 25:46 say the wicked will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life?” Good question. For no good exegetical reason, some Annihilationists have understood the word “eternal” to refer, not to a duration of time, but to the quality of God’s judgment. It’s eternal in quality, even though it has an end. Other Annihilationists say “eternal” refers to the effect of divine judgment. That is to say, God’s judgment results in death—as in extinction, annihilation—which is a state of non-being that lasts eternally.
If you’re having a hard time bending your mind around that, you’re not alone. It’s hard to conceive of a sinner experiencing an eternal quality of judgment without it lasting forever. Matthew 25:46 clearly teaches that the duration of punishment and life are alike, both eternal. John MacArthur has said,
Punishment in hell is defined by the word aionios, which is the word eternal or everlasting. There are people who would like to redefine that word aioniosand say, "Well, it doesn't really mean forever." But if you do that with hell, you've just done it with heaven, because the same word is used to describe both. If there is not an everlasting hell, then there is not an everlasting heaven. And I'll go one beyond that. The same word is used to describe God. And so if there is not an everlasting hell, then there is not an everlasting heaven, nor is there an everlasting God. It is clear that God is eternal; and, therefore, that heaven is eternal, and so is hell. (John MacArthur, “A Testimony of One Surprised to Be in Hell, Part 2”)
Augustine put it simply more than 1,500 years ago: “To say that life eternal shall be endless, [but that] punishment eternal shall come to an end is the height of absurdity.”
To say passages like Matthew 25:46 refer to eternality as a quality of judgment but say nothing about the duration, especially without exegetical support, is simply to beg the question. The meaning of “eternal” in that passage is clear—it’s everlasting.
Annihilationists sometimes explain “eternal” in the sense of an eternal effect. They say words like destruction and deathrefer to some kind of disintegration or consumption. God doesn’t torment the wicked for all eternity, He simply ends their existence, and the effect of that singular act of judgment lasts forever. As we noted above, they will allow God to be wrathful, but only for a time. To say divine punishment is everlasting is going way too far; it’s a form of cruel and unusual punishment. Eventually, they believe God will snuff the wicked out of existence, and that condition of non-existence lasts forever.
Apart from the metaphysical problem (How can something that no longer exists be said to last forever?), there’s a very serious problem with the “cessation of existence” view—it fails to account for a Lawgiver who is infinite and eternal by nature. The severity of an offense is measured, not merely by the nature of the act itself, but also in relation to the one offended. For example, if one man punches another man on a street corner, he may suffer some consequences—charges of disturbing the peace, assault, or battery. But to punch the President of the United States ups the ante; when the Secret Service finishes with him, he’ll be doing some serious prison time.
It’s like that with offenses committed against a holy God. Since an offense against a finite lawgiver is finite, the punishment to satisfy the offense is also finite. That’s the principle behind Exodus 21, an eye for an eye (vv. 23-25). But an offense against an infinite, eternal Lawgiver is notfinite; it’s infinite and eternal. It is up to the Judge to determine the severity of the infraction itself—i.e., telling a “white” lie versus committing homicide—but the nature of the infraction is measured against the nature of God who is holy and eternal. Likewise, God, who is perfect in righteousness, determines the justice an infraction demands. According to His Word, the punishment for an offense against a holy God is everlasting torment in hell.
On a human level, it’s understandable when people recoil from the Bible’s teaching about eternal torment. It’s an absolutely horrible, terrifying doctrine. It’s impossible for us to conceive of a crime so severe—even the crimes of notorious people like Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, and Osama bin Laden—as to merit the everlasting, excruciating agony described in the Bible. But that shows just how little we understand the sinfulness of sin on the one hand, and the holiness of God on the other.
God’s ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts—we cannot fully comprehend Him (Isa. 55:8-9). In an uncomfortably poignant and penetrating way, the doctrine of eternal hell confronts our loyalty, reveals our true authority, and demands that we set aside what seems reasonable to us and trust in the righteous judgment of a holy God. When we embrace the hard doctrines of the Bible, it becomes one of the most significant evidences of true, God-given faith.
The biblical doctrine of an eternal hell gives us yet another reason to praise God for the gospel. It took an eternal person to satisfy an eternal penalty against sin, which disqualified the entire human race, except one Person—Jesus Christ. He is the Son of man and the eternal Son of God. When Jesus laid down His life, His sacrifice satisfied every requirement of divine justice. For those who trust in Jesus Christ as their Substitute, His death has satisfied the eternal wrath of an eternal, righteous God. He bore our punishment in His body, absorbing God’s eternal wrath. But for those who do not embrace Christ, they are left to themselves—they bear the guilt of their offenses against an eternal God, and they will suffer for it eternally, never able to satisfy His eternal wrath..

thanks for the book listing. Although I am still reserved about the concept of limited souls and/or spirits, because of the powers and principalities spoken of in scripture, with whom we are engaged in revealing the manifold wisdom of God.

Hell does not hurt my feelings and it is part of God's plan, but the belief of immortal souls and torture though out eternity when it is plainly stated in the Bible that the wages of sin is death. perish, destroy and the wicked ashes under your feet in Malachi 4:3 that goes along with God saying the wages of sin is death in the Bible....

Hell is eternal and the grave is also referred to as sheol or another word for hell....there will be a lake of fire at the end killing the wicked and purifying the earth and John said I saw a new heaven and a new earth as the former things were passed away.

Words for the wicked....perish, destroyed, wages of sin death, ashes under your feet. All these words sound final to me....hell is final and eternal the wicked are GONE forever...

  • "And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power," (2 Thess. 1:9).
  • Etc,etc..

And not only this but the fact that the church is making known the manifold wisdom of God to agencies beyond this earth compels me to believe that though Satan and his angels, as well as unbelievers, are thrown into the Lake of Fire, which is the second death, it does not preclude those other rulers and authorities continuing after final judgement has been accomplished. Eph 3: 8-12: "8 To me, the very least of all [d]saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ,9 and to [e]bring to light what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God who created all things;10 so that the manifoldwisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places.11 This was in accordance with the[f]eternal purpose which He [g]carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord,12 in whom we have boldness and [h]confident access through faith [i]in Him."

And again Eph 6:12 "12 For our struggle is not against [e]flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places."

After reading Eph 6:12, if you do not end up with something beyond flesh and blood, such as humanity, then you have done something wrong. It is "heavenly" forces of evil with which we have conflict.

So, will they all be obliterated as some suggest. I think not. What God made in our beginning was "very good".

I won't drag on, but it seems ridiculous to suggest that every principality and power of the heavens that may diametrically opposed to God will be annihilated at some point. I know my statements are often highly controversial, but then I am not committed to traditional interpretations of scripture, so I apologize for any offense caused by my statements.

At this point i am quite sad at how entrenched in the unbiblical some of you are simply because the concept of hell hurts your feelings. Do you seriously believe that your twisting of scripture brings about the truth or are you purposefuly being deceptive?
You have got to see nothing is about unbiblical ideas or feelings, it is looking at foundations and why one version of the model is taken forward and not another.

One concept above others is the idea of guilt and innocense. The message of Jesus works because there is hope of living perfectly. Now the idea of total depravity says Jesus is lying when he says "Be perfect as the Father is perfect."

Now it is easier to paint extremes than work through a version of compromise. Look at the parables of a seed and the sower, a vineyard, tenants. There is subtlety, variation, problems and also victory.

Now look at modern culture. All are sent to hell unless they believe. They are tortured by Satan and his demons.
Now this is simply not true.

Hell only exists as the lake of fire, into which Hades and death are thrown.
Now this model as based on the book of revelations, there is actually very little information. Worse still there is very little other information about judgement and how this will work.

Think about this, whatever you believe it will make no difference to Gods judgement. If your fate is death or eternal torture the actual fate is outside your control, so belief makes no difference or even which version you accept or deny.

It simply is a place you do not want to go. But the version you tell does reflect on your personal idea of who God is.
So which version do you want to hold to? The one constructed by scripture or church history?

I say this because most peoples versions are not biblical.

You have only Lazerus and pain in fire, but he is in hades not the 2nd death lake of fire.
Everything else could be annihilation or something else like torture, but this does not fit with the word, destroyed.
All fire we know of burns things up into carbon dioxide, not keeps things as they are but just creates pain.
In our whole lives, there is no fire like this, yet you want to say this is what it means.

To dare to question such a concept feels like blasphemy, until you realise it is embedded in our outlook, where the enemy must suffer unspeakably for daring to disagree with us. Does this not speak more to the flesh than the spirit?

Some are never going to deal with the reality of hell. They are ok with the reality of heaven but deny the reality of hell. Hell is full of people who denied the reality of it's existence. They know better now but it is far too late. Today is the day of salvation seek ye the Lord while He may be found.

Amen to that for sure.......bet the rich man doesn't doubt it......and he still probably wishes for a single drop of water to cool his tongue since he is in torments (torcher)!

Im 23 years old, been a christian for 5 years, and i can say ive been the conduit through which the Holy Spirit brought people to Christ. Have i led anyone to Christ? No. Im not arrogant enough to think i am the one that did the leading.

You seem to think evangelism is some kind of game where we are all supposed to keep score of "how many we led to Christ."

Grow up. People's eternities are at stake, more than just your ego.
Thank you for the answer.

This is what this thread has shown. That some people would rather twist God's words and create their own god in their image than accept the concept of hell. It is frustrating and saddening and just exhibits man's desire to worship himself. As you said, they love the idea of heaven, and even an eternal heaven, but hell and an eternal hell isn't what THEY would do so they make a false god that doesn't make hell eternal.

Hell is very real. But it is not what folks think it is, though. You have to ignore all logic to make it into a torture chamber. The richman could not have been in flames because we know nobody today who can talk normally while being roasted alive by a roaring fire. The richman was obviously tormented by the heat of the flame that was in front of him (that was in the great gulf fixed between him and Abraham).

Jesus illustrated spiritual truth by way of real world examples. We know of no real world example of God torturing his enemies for a prolonged period of time. God usually just destroys his enemies. So those in Torments or Hell (Which is more like a prison and not a torture chamber) will be cast into the Lake of Fire will they will be destroyed both body and soul. I say this because.... Jesus said, fear not those who can kill the body but fear the one who can destroy both body and soul in Gehenna, i.e. the Lake of Fire (Matthew 10:28). Okay, let's understand something here. We see a relation of not to fear those who can destroy our physical body. This is not endless torture that will last forever. This is physical death. So then this is how we relate to the next part of what Jesus says. He says fear the one (Jesus) who can destroy (there is that word destroy again) both body and soul in Hell (Gehenna, i.e. Lake of Fire). This is the same thing we see in Revelation 21:8. The Lake of Fire is called the Second Death. Well, we can relate to the Second Death in what it does by looking at the First Death. The first death is physical and ends in the elimination of the body (by decay). This is also how we should understand the Second Death. It will also be a destruction of one's being. The Scriptures also say the last enemy to be destroyed is death. Okay now. Who were the enemies of God before death? Don't you think they will be destroyed, too?

How is Hell eternal if it is thrown into the lake of Fire?

Posting to show hades gets cast into the Lake of fire

Luke 16:23
And in hades he lift up his eyes being in torments,

Luke 16:28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them,
lest they also come into this place of torment.

Shown here are the dead being delivered up out of hades...

Rev 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hades delivered up the deadwhich were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

Death and hades gets cast into the lake of fire

Rev 20:14 And death and hades were cast into the lake of fire.

This is the second death.

So in the above it shows death and hades are cast into the lake of fire
(but only after the dead in them) are delivered up out of them.

And then ofcourse the following verse says,

Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

which is my point. Hell cannot therefore be eternal if it is thrown with death into the lake of fire. It also tells us the Lake of fire is the second death. How can there be eternal punishment with death?

Yeah, Hell or Torments is still not a nice place to be. I agree with what it says here. The richman was so distressed by it that he wanted to warn his relatives of such a place. He lift up his eyes being tormented or being in a place of torment. I could be wrong, (and I am open to seeing otherwise with Scripture), but I see this as the richman being tormented (not tortured) by the heat of the flame in front of him (in the great gulf fixed between him and Abraham) because we know that no human today can carry on a normal conversation while being engulfed by flames. Such a person would be just screaming and babbling incoherently by all that pain. It would also go with the assumption that people have been down there for thousands of years, too. Unless somehow time was different there (Meaning, the passage of time might pass more quickly in the outside world while one is in Hell).

However, I believe it is important we look at the real world when looking at the spiritual because Jesus always illustrated spiritual truth with real world examples.

Ill repost hoping it gets read this time.

But for those who do not embrace Christ, they are left to themselves—they bear the guilt of their offenses against an eternal God, and they will suffer for it eternally, never able to satisfy His eternal wrath

Been busy at work, so I had no time to reply to these verses. But I will in time. In the mean time, what do you make of Matthew 10:28? Jesus relates the destruction of not fearing what man can do to our bodies (in the fact they can kill us) and relates it to the fact that we should actually fear the one who can destroy both body and soul in Hell. This "destruction" is related to the first one or the physical destruction that man can do to you. Also, the Lake of Fire is called the Second Death. Again, this is related to our understanding of the First Death (Which is physical death). You can't call the Second Death what it is if it is not related to the FIrst Death. For being born again spiritually is related to being born physically. In both births, one experiences new life. One by the flesh and one by the Spirit. Also, the Scriptures say the last enemy to be destroyed is Death. Okay. Who were the other enemies of God that are going to be destroyed before Death? Did you ever think about that?

Why would i argue with you? You proved long ago you have nothing of real value to add, i and many others know it. Run along and let real discussions happen.

Well, all you have done here seems to have worked on a few.
Birds of a feather. I get it..... Its okay to teach lies, as long as you do it with loooove.

I present scripture. You change the topic. Its useless with you.
Others present scripture. You avoid it all. You dodge 1 John 1:8 over and over and over and over......
Now it goes back to our opinion. Why do you have such a hard time understanding that?????!!!!!

You try sleight of hand by stating we can not answer your questions.
Others have, and you dislike their answers. Back to opinions.

If you and your legal team keep twisting scripture......expect it.
Remember, you're.....ahem.......being persecuted for righteousness sake.
Jason what in the world makes you say...that Jesus preached to souls already on their way to hell?
That is absurd.
Jesus preached to flesh

The only thing I could imagine Jesus saying to a soul onward to hell...is "You shouldnt have been so terrible"
No doubt....he comes up with some rigmarole for sure!
