Debate over rebel flag widens to include all symbols of Confederacy

The debate over the rebel flag that began anew after last week's church shootings in Charleston, S.C., has morphed into a full-blown Confederate controversy.

While Stars and Bars have long been associated by many with slavery, the latest campaign to remove Confederate emblems has extended beyond the flag to statues, memorials, parks and even school mascots. Never has the debate over what symbolizes heritage and what stands for hate covered so much ground, as efforts to strip icons that have been part of the visual and cultural landscape of the South for decades are afoot at national, state and local levels.

This is nothing short of insanity. As I've said on the flag thread, the Civil War was only indirectly about slavery. It was much more about States' Right, economic freedom, and a preference -- constitutionally based -- for limited vs. centralized government.

Those memorials, parks, and symbols aren't about bigotry. They are about American history, and they need to be preserved. The effort has spread to the education system, where the Ft. Smith (Ark.) school district has decided to rename Southside High School's athletic teams. A school board committee passed a resolution that will ban the school’s fight song, "Dixie," and trash the name "Rebels."

It also wouldn't surprise me any at all if, after their successful campaign to destroy any memory of the South, they then come after the American flag and the symbols of patriotism, freedom, and constitutional law.

This is getting ridiculous and over the top.

When I was in high school our school mascot was Traveller, Robert E Lee's horse. I guess that wouldn't be allowed nowadays.It's a shame to see people wanting to tear down an important part of this country's history, all in the name of political correctness.

I read the rest of the article and saw where it stated that Tennessee lawmakers are trying to get rid of a Nathan Bedford Forest bust. They have been trying to get rid of that for years. Recent happenings aren't the cause of this.
But I do agree this is insane. One can lie about history, but they can't change it.

But they can stop teaching it, and in another generation, it will be gone.

Look I dont even see the point of memorializing the losers. As a southern it's not like I go around "wooo, yeah dawg the south we got our butts kicked, but yee-haw still going strong" The whole redneck passion of the confederacy is something I'll never understand, though luckily it normally stays safe in the trailer parks with the rest of the awful southern stereotypes.

And racism will still remain because our lovely politicians would rather clear their shallow conscience and remove a flag rather than fix the actual issue at hand.

And, I LOVE ABBY! Her and Gibbs are my favorite.

You'd be surprised who flies a confederate flag.
There is a road in my town called "Confederate Way" and the flag is flying high. And it ain't no trailer park.

Honestly, Naut, I think you're missing the point. It isn't a celebration of anything to do with who won and who lost. It is a memorialization to history. And from the perspective of some, the fact that this country changed for the worse with the South's victory. There was no politicoeconomic force to prevent the industrialists from centralizing government, and when they did, the career bureaucrat was born.

That bizarre hybrid that had never before existed took government away even from the industrialist and the result is the corrupt, inefficient, leftist-socialist government that seeks only to serve itself that we have today. There needs to be mile markers for history so people can realize what they have done to us.

And we're seeing heightened verbiage attempting to destroy the 2nd Amendment.
 
If all these bannings are going to happen then Tennessee will literally become extinct. As will our history and heritage. Here in Tennessee we have Bedford County where Nathan Bedford Forest lived. In Chapel hill there is a monument of Forest along with many other places. What are they going to do? Rename towns, cities and streets?
 
If I could say one thing to/ask one question of Dylann Roof, it would be this:

"Although you claim to support the Confederate flag and the Confederacy (or use them as a ruse), was it your real intention to do away with any vestiges of those things? Because if so, boy it sure looks as if you have succeeded in what you set out to accomplish."

Now, why would somebody think of something as ludicrous as memorializing losers? Why should we even be thinking on the folks that was wiped out of history during the terrible years? Heck no, forget the entire ordeal, aint no room for losers here, bring us the winners, and make sure the losers stays safe in the trailer parks.

You say you're southern? Then why be you advocating stereotypes not made on southern soil? Why you talking rednecks down? I'll pray that the good Lord will soften your heart...and, I take pride in being a redneck. Sorry bout the rant...
