A bit frightening how close you described me while you described you. The only difference is once I'm awake, I'm awake until most people are already at work, and I can sleep with light, but not restful sleep. (Same dream loops, and my dreams are usually I'm lost in some form of a maze -- a complicated layout for a house, a terrible layout for a shopping center, the underbelly of a huge building with pipes, rats, and an occasional out-in-the-open-and-filthy toilet -- all the time looking for a clean toilet sway from people walking by. lol)
One thing I learned recently that might help you, but doctors don't seem to recognize as viable. Two different kinds of sleeping pills will not cause an overdose. If you can't convince a doctor of that, and don't use Benedyrl often, a sleeping pill plus Benedryl will give you that extra kick into sleeping longer. And, also a sleeping pill plus a strong variety of melatonin might kick start you into a full night of sleep. Warning though, if you do these for a long period of time, they too become ineffective. The friend that taught me this says she only uses something extra besides the sleeping pill when she absolutely has to be awake the next day -- maybe once or twice a month.
And if the only thing keeping you awake in the day time is the light, you do know they have sleep masks for a reason, right? Sure, a guy isn't going to get caught dead wearing one, but who can tell, since no one should be coming into your bedroom when you are sleeping? lol
