Some of us have insomnia, some of us just stay up because we can. Why not hang out since we're up? :D

Insomnia is a weird thing.

When I want to sleep I can't,
when I have to get up earlier I could sleep all day

Sometimes I can sleep for just 4 hours and feel refreshed and that's me sorted.

Other times I can sleep for 10 hours (assuming I can sleep) and still feel like
death warmed up!

Some of us don't sleep at night because of the care of someone else. You hear every time they get out of bed, every shallow breath, every weird noise they make.

But one nice thing is that the Lord stays up with you on those sleepless nights. He likes to hang out with you and if you will listen carefully, he will tell you "bedtime" stories.

Those sleepless nights I echo what Samuel said, "Speak Lord, your servant is listening". He does. Sometimes it is just one word - sometimes a new perspective on something. Sometimes only a presence felt.

The most profound thoughts have come in the middle of a sleepless night.

Thank you for stating it that way! It's so ridiculous when people sleep in until 12 noon and say "I'm that way because I have insomnia! I can't fall asleep until like 2 - 3 AM." Um no, insomniacs don't sleep for 9 - 10 hours.

When I have to get up early, it's almost a recipe for I won't sleep that night. I've gone to 12:30 doctor appointments without sleeping for 36 hours, because if I don't go I don't get a prescription I need.

I've had insomnia since my early 40's. During much of that time, I was carefree -- no job, not family issues, no worrying about the future, absolutely carefree.

The first thing doctor's ask is "What are you thinking about as you drift to sleep?" They expect me to give some big disaster I'm worried about. Usually I think about a TV show I just watched. At one point, I thought out how to write my novel, but then that tended to make me dream constantly of walking, talking teddy bears, which got creepy fast. I used to get up when I ran out of things to think about.

Sometimes, insomnia just-is. I used to wish I had a problem to think about, but now that I do, I hate that more than having nothing to think of. lol

Yes.

No.

Got bored around 48ish. It's hard to picture the Serta Counting Sheeps' individuality while counting them.

I've also squared numbers in my mind. Got up to five figures before that got so complicated it woke me up.

Picked counting breathes next.

Didn't work either.
;)

There is a difference between having insomnia and just staying up because you can

Lie awake for a long time before you fall asleep
Sleep for only short periods
Be awake for much of the night
Feel as if you haven't slept at all
Wake up too early
these are some of the symptoms of insomnia, Me I take heavy sleeping pills and this is how most of my nights are- I take the pills around nine or ten a lot fo times they don't even work till three hours later even once I am asleep i wake up an hour or two later sometimes I can go back to sleep but then wake up another two hours later and this cycle continues for the rest of the night, but sometimes I cannot go back to sleep period and I cannot take more sleeping meds because of overdose dangers.

I am always tired I can't ever get enough coffee just to feel normal and not tired and sleepy all the time, other nights I will lay in bed all night from nine pm to at least six am and still am unable to sleep the slightest bit of light wakes me up if I start to sleep or doze off even if I have to pee I suddenly wake up and then once I do go to the bathroom there is a 50/50 chance I will not be able to go back to sleep.

auses of insomnia: Figuring out why you can’t sleep

In order to properly treat and cure your insomnia, you need to become a sleep detective. Emotional issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression cause half of all insomnia cases. But your daytime habits, sleep routine, and physical health may also play a role. Try to identify all possible causes of your insomnia. Once you figure out the root cause, you can tailor treatment accordingly.

Are you under a lot of stress?
Are you depressed or feel emotionally flat or hopeless?
Do you struggle with chronic feelings of anxiety or worry?
Have you recently gone through a traumatic experience?
Are you taking any medications that might be affecting your sleep?
Do you have any health problems that may be interfering with sleep?
Is your sleep environment quiet and comfortable?
Are you spending enough time in sunlight during the day and in darkness at night?
Do you try to go to bed and get up around the same time every day?

A bit frightening how close you described me while you described you. The only difference is once I'm awake, I'm awake until most people are already at work, and I can sleep with light, but not restful sleep. (Same dream loops, and my dreams are usually I'm lost in some form of a maze -- a complicated layout for a house, a terrible layout for a shopping center, the underbelly of a huge building with pipes, rats, and an occasional out-in-the-open-and-filthy toilet -- all the time looking for a clean toilet sway from people walking by. lol)

One thing I learned recently that might help you, but doctors don't seem to recognize as viable. Two different kinds of sleeping pills will not cause an overdose. If you can't convince a doctor of that, and don't use Benedyrl often, a sleeping pill plus Benedryl will give you that extra kick into sleeping longer. And, also a sleeping pill plus a strong variety of melatonin might kick start you into a full night of sleep. Warning though, if you do these for a long period of time, they too become ineffective. The friend that taught me this says she only uses something extra besides the sleeping pill when she absolutely has to be awake the next day -- maybe once or twice a month.

And if the only thing keeping you awake in the day time is the light, you do know they have sleep masks for a reason, right? Sure, a guy isn't going to get caught dead wearing one, but who can tell, since no one should be coming into your bedroom when you are sleeping? lol

actually that isn't true there are several types of insomnia

Can’t sleep? Understanding insomnia and its symptoms

Insomnia is the inability to get the amount of sleep you need to wake up feeling rested and refreshed. Because different people need different amounts of sleep, insomnia is defined by the quality of your sleep and how you feel after sleeping—not the number of hours you sleep or how quickly you doze off. Even if you’re spending eight hours a night in bed, if you feel drowsy and fatigued during the day, you may be experiencing insomnia.

Although insomnia is the most common sleep complaint, it is not a single sleep disorder. It’s more accurate to think of insomnia as a symptom of another problem, which differs from person to person. It could be something as simple as drinking too much caffeine during the day or a more complex issue like an underlying medical condition or feeling overloaded with responsibilities.

Very true I use a sleeping for specifically for insomnia and it worked at first but for some reason now it doesn't almost as if my body adapted, so i use Benedyrl and melatonin the benedyrl relaxes me really well and the melatonin kicks in the sleep however it has to be the chewable kind because for some reason the actual pill kind has no affect on me. but when there is light in the room I just cover my eyes with a shirt I have to because my room mate not only has his computer on all the time but he cannot sleep without the hall light on for some reason.

But even so I have had this issue since I was a kid but it only got severe a few months ago, what is weird is if I cannot sleep all night I can sleep in the day without even using medicine but since I have work I cannot do much of that

Haha thanks Blain. I wasn't arguing any of that. I've known people that developed bad sleeping habits, then justified them as insomnia. That's makes me roll my eyes.

Insomnia?

Or Am I awake thinking I´m a sleepwalker, typing over my keyboard?

Hmmm!

I need a shower to refresh my ideas...

:p
