stop excusing your sin.

If you lust after a woman, You are in sin

If you fantasize having sex with a lady, your in sin

If you hate your brother, and fantasize taking revenge on him you are in sin

If you ....... (I think you get the picture)
I am not excusing my sins so once again you are passing false witness against me again that I asked you nicely more then once to please stop.

Lust's are sinful feelings that arise from thoughts in the heart, and become action.
Lord Jesus says what proceeds from the mouth defiles a man, because your words, treatment toward others, and your lusts come out in action. Speaking ill on another is still an action !!!

Hate again is another sinful feeling that arises from thoughts, this is what James was trying to clarify on what Jesus was saying. Bad thoughts rise to and give birth to sinful feelings, and when those sinful feelings become full grown they control you as they become action. The thought alone does not constitute sin as then that would mean believers will never have self-control, but the bible says by the Holy Spirit we will learn to have self-control........

No, you've simply reinvented a new definition for "proper context." Can't you see that's not flying? degrees in rocket science or brain surgery not required.

I have not reinvented anything as Jesus is the one that said what proceeds is what defiles a man, for thoughts lead to and give birth to sinful lusts/feelings and then goes and becomes full grown when it becomes action.

The bible clearly says that born again believers will learn to have self control by the Holy Spirit and will cut those thoughts off before they give birth to the sinful lusts/feelings.......

And turning this right back to thoughts really are sin, whether you want to believe that or not:
Matthew 5:
27“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Lust in the heart = feelings

Thoughts give birth to sin when they turn to lustful feelings, and when full grown become action as in they still control you.
The bible makes it very clear the Holy Spirit will lead a person in self-control to keep your thoughts from getting that far, but if you claim every thought is sin then you are in turn saying born again believers will never have self-control. Which is unbiblical !!!

"Proper context" is the Bible, not your corrections of the Bible.

Notice once again that James is saying that when those lustful feelings arise from temptation they give birth to sin !!!

Thoughts can be wrong and come from our temptations, but the bible makes a point on rather or not you give into those thoughts and let them grow into sinful lusts of the flesh.

The Holy Spirit was sent to help us to do this and gain self-control over these lusts and put them to death, so that we no longer give into them any more. If a person continues constantly to deliberately give into those lustful temptations the bible shows the Holy Spirit is not working in that person, for the fruits of the Spirit will lead a person not to sin as those those fruits such as love does no harm to self or others. Apostle Paul: Romans 13:9-11, Galatians 5:22-26
all sins starts between the ears

your body does not act independantly of your brain....the thought of the sin was between the ears

I don't know why that is so hard to understand

The reality is, it doesn't make any difference. The reality is, by the fallen nature of man, we have no choice as to whether we sin or not. We do. Everyone. Even though saved, we sin.......................................
Doesn't matter? Incredible!
How do you reconcile that last part with Christ saying "go and sin no more"?

oldhermit; All sin is a choice but this does not suggest that the act itself is understood to be sin by the individual. This is a sin of ignorance.
Here is as close as I have seen.
I'll put up a couple of verses. If you want to study this topic, just go to bible gateway and search "ignorance", and read those accompanying passages.

Acts 17:30 "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:"
1 Peter 1:13-15 "Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;"

There was a time when man had ignorance as a viable excuse. No longer. If you are saved you are commanded to study to show yourself approved unto God. That doesn't leave any room for ignorance of sin. The bible is perfect and complete. We are out of excuses. All sin is now down with knowledge of the transgression.
There is no more leniency by God, no more winking at ignorance.
If you sin, you sin by choice, you sin willfully.
In conclusion, once again, let me exhort all of you to choose NOT to sin. You are your own free moral agent. You have control over your life, over your destination. God gave you the right to make decisions and choices for yourself.
Make the ones that gain eternal life. Make the choice to stop sinning.
Make the choice to obey, as God desires.

I'm really gonna throw a spanner in the works now. LOL :)

Just a side point but there are sins of omission as well. Often when people
talk about sin, they talk about the things they have done, but what about the
things they haven't done which they should have done.

Now big question - honestly I am not sure of the answer myself.

Did Adam and Eve sin before the fall? They ate from the tree of the knowledge
of good and evil and for the first time realised they were naked.

But they were also naked before they ate from the tree, is it possible they also
committed sinful actions before the fall but were unaware of it? If so, then it
was not held against them as they had no knowledge of what they were doing.

I told you it was a bit of a "spanner in the works" question. I don't know either.

Another spanner in the works question - what exactly is sin?

We can point to things like robbing a bank, lying, stealing being
rude or angry etc and we know that is sin. But the actual act of sinning is just
a by-product of the thought processes of the brain.

The wrong doing is an outward action of an inner attitude or thought process.
So… is sin really more about the way we think, rather then the actual action.

If this is the case, then it would make sense that sin came into the world when the
knowledge of good and evil came into the world.

Umm interesting, the verses which say be transformed by the renewing
of your mind, would make more sense if sin was regarded as the way we think,
rather then by what we do.

Other interesting verses:-

Gen 6 v 5 The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the
earth and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil
continually.

Matt 15 v 17
Do you not understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the
stomach and is eliminated? But those things which proceed out of the
mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. For out of the heart
proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false
witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man….

If sin is the ingrained way a man thinks, and the outward working of it is just
a consequential wrong action. Then sin goes way beyond just the physical, one
might conclude that the sin nature became part of our DNA, with the only corrective
cure being the blood of Jesus for those who accept the free gift of salvation.

Even then, the sin nature is so ingrained, that the current physical body still cannot be
saved, it gets old, gets ill, breaks down and dies - only the spirit is saved, the inner man.

My brain is starting to hurt now, i've done too much thinking:)
Romans 7:24-25
king James version(kjv)

24.)O wretched man that I am!who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25.)I thank GOD through JESUS CHRIST our LORD.So then with the mind I myself serve the law of GOD;but with the flesh the law of sin.

Sorry, but if your claiming lust is not a sin unless it goes to action you are doing the very thing I claimed you are doing.

I can lust of a woman for hours and never do anything about it, your telling me that is not sin? You have issues.

If "the Bible clearly says" that, then why did you change all the verses VG gave you to something else completely?

You're 38 years old. Surely you've learned "nah-hunh" doesn't work. If you're old enough to be on this site, "nah hunh" doesn't work, even if you repeat it over and over again, like you seem determined to do. At this point, let's skip degrees in rocket science or brain surgery. This is understood by most people by the time they finish third grade. Seriously seriously silly.

Okay, bypassing that VG was saying it doesn't matter because sin is sin whether we know it by name or just do it, you've really lost me.

When was ignorance a viable excuse? Even Cain couldn't make that one play.

for the unregenerate, sin is not a choice.
they are slaves to sin and unable to please God in any way.

for the regenerate, God's covenant people, sin is a choice.

thank God in Christ for redemption from slavery.
and for forgiveness, even from hidden fault.

I looked at the fifth piece of rich chocolate in my hand just a minute ago and told it "You are sin". "One more bite of you and I will be guilty of gluttony".

I took the bite. :D

Where is that line? That is the true question. For some, 2 may be a sin, for others 6 may be a sin.

We can't set the standard for others. It is between the Lord and His servant.

I understand it just fine, and if a person is going to claim the thought itself is sin and not what gives birth to sin, then you are pretty much saying born again believers will never have overcome and have victory over sin.

That is unbiblical to think that way;

1 Corinthians 15:57
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
