I think you may be missing SO much in this parable.
To me, it shows the love of the Father even when we "halfheartedly" move toward Him.. He does not insist upon some perfect performance to qualify us for His love.... We already HAVE that long before we even begin to think about simply being "churchy"..... which is where many of us DO reside when we first move toward Jesus.

But once again you are only speaking on the coming to the Lord when we first start believing in Him.
We all have sinned and fallen short when we first come to Him and are undeserving of that grace He shows to us, but once we put our faith and trust in Him we are to be obedient to His teachings because our love for Him will guide us to do such. That love also will guide us to not do and treat others wrong, and the Holy Spirit was sent to us to strengthen us where we are weak.
The bible does not say a person can continue to walk as they previously walked in that old sin nature of ours.
We are to walk by the Spirit and those fruits that come from the Spirit will reflect in our actions and speech, and Apostle James says a born again believer will be full of those fruits;
James 3:17
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
The Lord Jesus will always be there looking for us and calling us back when we faulter and walk away from Him by giving into our lusts. We have the choice to choose to come back or not, and a doctrine that teaches we do not have free will to choose is not biblical.............For God Himself said He gives us the choice to choose eternal life or eternal death (Joshua 24:15).
