What's a bicycle crunch?
It's when you lie flat with your lower back pressed to the ground. You move your legs, like you're pedaling a bike, while doing crutches. It's supposed to help with your abs and obliques.

What's a bicycle crunch?
Basically, you put your hands behind your head, then bring knee to head touching your knee with your elbow while straightening the other leg and keeping it a few inches off the floor. Then do it on the other side, back and forth like a bicycle. It's one of the best exercises you can do for your core in my opinion.

Thank you, Bruce and SYL. I hate ab exercises. Hate, hate, hate. But they sure are effective. :)

Bruce, you do eight sets of 25?!!!! I'd rather have a spider walk across my face than do 8x25.

It takes everything out of me after doing leg workouts.

That's what happens when working the body's largest muscle group.

haha, abs are probably my favorite workout. I usually do 5 sets of 50 with those, but I did quite a bit today, so I took it a little easier.

I enjoy a good chat about fitness so thought I would contribute my routine.

I train 5 days a week 3 sessions of strength and conditioning at a local boxing gym, It usually constitutes 5 x 3 minute rounds of skipping followed by 5 x 3 mins round of various bag work then a circuit of running/sprinting on the spot with various bodyweight exercises thrown this usually lasts around 20 minutes, followed by some core work planks, leg raises etc. The workout can be pretty brutal depending on who is leading the class. I do that on a Monday, wednesday and Friday

the other 2 sessions on Tuesday and Thursday and thos are pretty much weight training at the gym. I do lighter weights for more sets and reps, 4x12 squats, bench press, lat pull down and 3 x 8 military press. I suppliment my diet with whey protien 3 times a day and 5 grams of creatine on my weight day with 3 on my strength and conditioning.

I was pretty overweight when I started this routine at the beginning of July at 266 lb however which I have reduced to 224, my goal weight is 205

David, you're a beast.

What caused you to stop and think, "I want to lose weight"? Was there a specific moment you can think of?

Not really, I played rugby for most of my life and was used to being a big strong guy, I stopped playing nearly 3 years ago due to injury, I really didn't notice how big I was getting, I saw a picture at a wedding and was shocked, so since then I just decided to hit the gym and stuff. I enjoy the routine of it all :)

:) I have lost 80 pounds!
That is awesome!! And a huge accomplishment! Have you told your story on the forums somewhere? I'd love to hear how you did it, and what motivated you! How long did it take for you to lose 80 pounds?

Okay so I have a question..
I've struggled with my weight for a very long time. I have a bone disease that makes it hard for me to work out. After a while of working out I can do harder workouts but it usually takes a few months before I can even try.
Anyway.. At 15years old I weighed 190lbs. I walked 5 miles a day, changed my diet and did a work out called supreme 90. I had lost 57lbs in a year. Well I kept it off for a while just by walking and supreme 90.
When I was 19 I decided to do insanity, the first month into it I lost 10lbs but I got pregnant and had to stop. I didn't gain any weight in my pregnancy. But now my son is 10 months old and I've gained my weight back. I was 171 a week ago. Today I'm 166. All I've done so far is change my diet and I stopped drinking soda.
My question is..
Do any of you have any easier workouts to start off with other than walking? (I'm getting bored with walking all the time.) And does anyone have a list of stretches and ab workouts?

(Yes I have talked to a doctor about working out. I have the "okay" from him to do so as long as I know my own limits.)

24 Fat-Burning Ab Exercises (No Crunches!) - Health.com - This has a pretty good list of ab exercises, I've used some of them myself. The plank pose is really good, as it works your entire core, not just the abs. You could also take like a little stool or box, anything low really that you can step on and do "stair steps" up and down. You can also do things like stand against a wall and do squats or "couch" pushups, where you stretch out in front of the couch with your hands on the couch and go up and down. Anyway, just a few suggestions that came to mind, I'm sure others may have better answers :p

ab workouts aren't great , they are shown to be quite innefective. Fat is burnt from your entire body rather than just a single place so you can't target stomach weight loss with crunches etc; and the calorie cost of things like sit ups are quite low in comparison to other exercises. Since you done insanity you should progress around the same route. though because of your bone disease I wouldn't go straight to that extreme.

There are some excellent work outs you can do at home, However I suggest joining a class or fitness group as the motivation you gain from your peers does wonders for the longevity of a fitness program. Crossfit can be very good providing you find a good one and discuss your needs with coaches at the gym

I would have to disagree on that. As someone who's lost quite a bit of weight this year, ab work has been a huge part of that and can be very effective if done right and I would never discourage anyone from doing them. Not all ab workouts are as simple as a sit-up or crunch and many workout more than just the abs. But, you're right in saying you have to work your whole body. Focusing on only one area won't do the trick.

A body circuit of burpees, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, switch lunges is going to work your abs to a high degree as well as providing whole body benefits and a tremendous cardiovascular workout, your heart rate will be high,, you're body will be shocked and the calories used will be much more.

Don't get me wrong there is always a place in a workout routine for abs (crunches etc ) however they should be done as a part of a workout and not the main focus.

Hi,
I am into being fit and healthy. I am a runner and still compete on an amateur level. I run most days - take my dog with me as motivation - as well as train with my athletic club. My diet consists of almost Paleo as I find that this is a very healthy way to live. It means that I cook from scratch, no processed foods (although I am prone to the occasional biscuit etc). But I have never felt healthier being on this diet. Basically it is protein based which is a good thing for a runner.
I did not start running etc to lose weight. I have always been lean but as I get older, I am finding that certain foods do not agree with me.

:D

I hear what you're saying, I don't disagree with that. A lot of people do make that mistake, especially trying to burn stomach fat, which can be pesky lol. It definitely takes working your whole body.

Haha, I don't mind. I lost 53 pounds from January to July :p
