1. Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are. For this cause the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2. Beloved, now are we children of God, and it is not yet made manifest what we shall be. We know that, if he shall be manifested, we shall be like him; for we shall see him even as he is. 3. And every one that hath this hope set on him purifieth himself, even as he is pure (1 John 3:1-3)

Your comment wasn’t clear to me, in that it’s obvious that we don’t purify ourselves,
but then I thought, perhaps you are only attempting to relate this verse back to verse 6:12?
However, even then, that only says to resist the failings or sinful desires of our bodies,
but nothing at all about our being the active agent in some self-purification. Sanctification, by
the way, carries the meaning of being set aside for God's use ... and that, too, I suspect,
is not something that we manage to do to or for ourselves, but something that is done with us, by God.

Anyway, I did appreciate you quoting this verse, because it made me go back and look more closely at how I'd been
reading it from the Greek to English, and in dong so, found a few places where my translation needed adjustments.
Again, thank you for helping bring this to my attention.

Yet if the spirit of the [One], to Yeshua having roused out of dead [ones],
it dwells among you, the [One], to the Anointed having roused out of dead [ones],
to the deadened bodies of you He will vivify also,
through the spirit of Same indwelling among you. (~Robin)

Also included a couple other versions (see below) that I often use/ compare mine against;
most likely you are already aware of Young's Literal translation, but wondered if you've ever
read either the Dabhar or ALT Analytical-Literal Translations ... all three are well worth the effort.

Yea after I submitted it and read it again I can see how it can be misleading.
I shouldn't have underlined that part in Romans. The part I was talking about in 1 John is I know we are made perfect in the spirit but I was talking about purifying or renewing our minds after salvation if we remain alive and in our bodies here on earth and that's the living holy I meant.

Pondering, pondering ... the verb (Strong's #0048) used in 1John 3:3 isn't used by Paul ... not making any conclusions from that, by the way, just thought I'd mention the fact ... Frankly, the very thought of me, myself having anything to do with
being the active agent in my own "purification" ... or sanctification ... is totally wrong sounding.
It aint right!

Here are the words (word family) that our apostle Paul uses in his 13 epistles for "pure" ...

Different but related discussion point ... since no one can explain John's unexplainable words ...and I'd like
to draw your attention to the above translations, where the definite article is in brackets ..."[the] dead"...

The reason for this, is that the translatores are showing you that this definite article is added; that is,
it's an editorial enhancement, because there is no definite article, here, in the Greek. What they have done,
here, with their addition, is to turn the adjective "nekrOn" ...{of dead [ones] {3498 A-GPM} into a noun.
Notice, if you will, the even more literal translation (mine), shows this to be an adjective, more clearly:

Yet if the spirit of the [One], to Yeshua having roused out of dead [ones],
it dwells among you, the [One], to the Anointed having roused out of dead [ones],
to the deadened bodies of you He will vivify also,
through the spirit of Same indwelling among you. (~Robin)

True, I too, did have to add a word in brackets, but still it's most clear to the reader that the underlying Greek word, here,
is a discriptive modifier, an adjective ... the reason for such editorial enhancements being that the adjective stands alone,
without something to directly modify, you just have to know this from the context.

Now then, the only reason I bring this to your attention, is what I've found with another stand alone adjective, which almost
all translations inadvertently turn into a noun, and that the word "
hagia" (and other related words in it's word family). That is,
the adjective "hagia" (and others) just says discriptively "sanctified" ... "a sanctified [one]"
However, most translations change this to read, as if it were a noun, and not a stand alone adjective as ..."a saint" ...

Now, you and I, if we are believers, are, indeed, so-called "saints" ...
but God is really simply saying, about us, is that we are ..."sanctified [ones]" ...

And back to the topic thread, how we became such ... sanctified [ones] ... is because, as this verse from Romans tells us,
it's because God had placed His vivifying spirit within each of us; we are set apart for God's use, and eventual rousing.

But, and here's the very question that this topic thread brings out ... How in the world, by what logic, can John be saying that we purify or santify ourselves ... THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG WITH THAT ... but I'm sure, it aint John that's wrong, but rather how we are reading, or perceiving what he tells us, in that verse ... Immmmmm?

I know, I know ... but the scriptural words fascinate me ...
Notice, if you will, if you are still reading that the above list of adjectives that Paul uses
have little two-digit numbers superscripted after the different legends (i.e., A-NPN[SUP].21[/SUP])There are 24 different word options/forms for adjectives and nouns; that is different combinations
of gender, number, and case (nominative, genitive, dative, and accusative). Sometimes, as Words-Swordman
is attempting to point out, in another topic thread ("2Peter 3:16") this isn't easy to determine, because the
words are actually spelled the same in the Greek, and in such cases, this caterigorizing has to, then, be determined
by the context ...however, in that topic thread "2Peter 3:16" this is not a problem, because the spelling is different.
But notice, if you will, even in this above listing, the spelling ..."hagia" ...might be #.09; 11; or .21 ...
And, as long as I'm just rambling , here, to myself ... notice, that the above list is missing # .02; .03; .10; .13; .14; 16; .17; .22; .23; and .24. That is, in all 13 of his epistles, in his over 7000 different words, our apostle Paul didn't, for some odd
reason, didn't have any need to use the adjective in these 10 different formats.

So, to answer the question of those, who have "dismissed" me as just a cut and paster ... that's a lot of paste, I've used!
So tell us now, Crossnotes, what is John saying about our being able to "purify" ourselves! Ummmmmm?
No tipple today, lots of miles and hills on my bike ... Willie-T

Good evening Karraster ... I'm looking very hard at your feedback, but as of yet I'm unable to associate it with what has been said in the previous discussions ... either my ramble, or the original posts?

The question is, was, do you really think that John means, in that verse, that we are actually able to purify or santifiy ourselves?

The question is, was, do you really think that John means, in that verse, that we are actually able to purify or santifiy ourselves?

John means exactly what he wrote. The issue people have is false suppositions which cause conflict in their minds and thus they simply cannot accept what John has written at face value.

We purify ourselves by submitting ourselves to God. That is something that WE DO. God does not do it for us. God provides us with the tools but we have to put those tools to use.

Paul described it thus...

2Co 6:1 We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.

It is through cooperating with God (ie. yielding our hearts) that we are transformed inwardly resulting in a pure state, ie. the righteousness of the law fulfilled in us.

This is how faith purifies the heart.

Different authors in the Bible express it with different terminology but they are all expressing the same fundamental concept.

"...it is written, 'Be holy, for I am holy,"(1Peter 1:16). Never tolerate, because of sympathy for yourself or for others, any practice that is not in keeping with a holy God. Holiness means absolute purity of your walk before God, the words coming from your mouth, and every thought in your mind-placing every detail of your life under the scrutiny of God Himself. Holiness is not simply what God gives me, but what God has given me that is being exhibited in my life. Oswald Chambers.

Rev 22;14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by its gates.

This is exactly right.

God expects people to wash their robes, ie. repent/turn from wickedness and yield to His word. The "right way" is via "God's instruction" and we must do what God instructs.

Those whom refuse to yield themselves to God will ultimately be destroyed.

It is the doers of righteousness whom are righteous. Righteousness is rooted in the DOING of the right thing and the DOING is rooted in the pure heart of the righteous. God has provided us with everything we need that we be truly righteous (ie. grace) but we have to put that grace to use by exercising a real faith, the outcome being purity of heart, a heart that God reckons as righteousness because there is no guile present.

Seems to me it is saying that those who have purified themselves are those whose hope is set on Him. He is pure. It is Christ who is the pure and sinless Son of God, and we are made spiritually pure by His indwelling presence.

Have you ever considered the danger of spiritualising things away in order to deny any manifest standard?

The Bible is clear that the children of God are MANIFESTLY pure. Purity is not some disconnected pie in the sky concept that one possesses whilst one is manifestly impure.

Purity has to do with the real condition of our hearts. Jesus said that IF we abide in him then he will abide in us. There is no such thing as merely "trusting in Jesus" whilst at the same time "refusing to submit" to Jesus. Both go hand in hand would you not agree?

It is Christ who is pure and sinless. Purity is HIS character and is expressed in us and through us only by His grace as we live by faith in Him. We are pure in Him, and “unto the pure all things are pure; but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled” (Titus 1:15).

Of course we are pure in Jesus. Of course purity is expressed in us through the grace of God, after all, as workers together with God we don't receive grace to now working effect, we are effectually made manifestly pure. This is what the new birth and salvation is all about.

What is the point you are trying to make?

In your second to last post it appeared to me that you were attempting to spiritialise purity away as if it is something disconnected from what you actually manifest. In other words it seemed to me that you were promoting a concept that one could be "spiritually pure" because they "have their hope in Jesus" and yet at the same time be engaged in wickedness.

Were you promoting a disconnect between manifest conduct and being spiritually pure?

John taught that the children of God do not sin but rather that they DO righteousness because they are truly righteous. Of course this does not mean that a child of God does not misstep in the context of wrongdoing due to ignorance, rather it simply means that the heart is pure necessitating an always pure motive. In other words there is no rebellion to God.

Would you agree or disagree with the last paragraph I wrote?

Have you ever considered the danger of spiritualising things away in order to deny any manifest standard?

The Bible is clear that the children of God are MANIFESTLY pure. Purity is not some disconnected pie in the sky concept that one possesses whilst one is manifestly impure.

Purity has to do with the real condition of our hearts. Jesus said that IF we abide in him then he will abide in us. There is no such thing as merely "trusting in Jesus" whilst at the same time "refusing to submit" to Jesus. Both go hand in hand would you not agree?
Romans 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

For the cause of Christ
