The whole turtle thing is perfectly understandable. Have none of you ever seen Ernest Goes To Camp? One of the most devastating attacks they used was parachuting turtles.

Going back to the basics: Mashed potatoes and a basic chicken Marsala. So hungry right now, but it's going to be SO delicious!

If chicken Marsala is basic, what is fancy in your world?

Yeah, neither do I. At the risk of sounding elitist, there are too many other things I would rather do instead of watching a recording of strangers pretending to do things.
It's just another form of storytelling. If you don't enjoy it, fine. Do you enjoy stories though, brother? Like fiction?

So my aunt showed me this song that was done the year I was born. Do any of you all remember it or know about the singers? I really like it but apparently it's not the guys singing it. It was a huge scandal back in the day!
They've got some sick dance moves! :p

I'm going to faint about Milli Vanilli. It was SUCH a thing. The singers were German studio musicians, and they hired dancer/models for the stage show and their track malfunctioned when they were on stage.

Wow... Now this is what makes some of us feel old. :)

Many of us remember the Milli Vanilli incident all too well, as it was one of those things that was all over the news and you couldn't get away from it. It really brought up the issue of lip-syncing (even though it's always been done) and how far it can go and still be considered acceptable.

Unfortunately, the lives of the two "band" members really went downhill after that, and one died of an overdose.

Hi Molly! I've really been enjoying your posts and I like your new avatar. You look so pretty and yet a little mysterious :D!

If you're interested in the whole Milli Vanilli story, I briefly scanned the Wiki article about them and it might be more info than you want to read about them, but the thing they're really known for (sadly) is that they won a Grammy--and then had to give it back--because of the lip syncing.

There was also some documentary about them, which I'm sure you can find on YouTube. Others here are free to correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understood it at the time, the Grammy was actually their biggest downfall.

Musical artists "sing" to recorded tracks all the time, especially when there are complicated dance moves, and at the time, another group, Black Box, got a lot of heat for releasing videos with a very thin, model-esque "singer" who was not the voice of the band (rather, it was a much heavier woman.)

However, poor Milli Vanilli REALLY took the fallout when they won that Grammy. There are also other stories of suspicions about their authenticity (before the scandal really broke) when they would "sing" and concerts.... and their soundtrack somehow messed up, revealing that their own voices were not a all what was on the track.

It really was a fascinating story, but so unfortunate for the lives of the "faces" at the front of the "group".

Good gracious.

I feel like a history teacher. Someone bring me an apple!!! Preferably in the form of a pie...

P.S. I also have to wonder if it's a sign of the times, especially in today's digitized, computer graph-icked, "everything is pretty much fake" world.

If the Milli Vanilli "scandal" would have happened today, would anyone blink an eye?

I have to wonder in the days of groups like Daft Punk (gold and silver robots as the "band" members), Gorillaz, and Asian pop groups with animated characters as the faces of the bands, and holograms of artists who have been deceased for decades...

Maybe no one cares unless they start winning big awards, I'm not sure.

speaking of storytelling. If you ever find yourself in Edinburgh, go to the storytelling museum, they have storytelling events now and then :D

Not my style, but my sister was always listening to what was popular. When I was a teen it was snoop dog. Back when I was a kid it was Milli Vanilli. So yeah, I know of that song and the scandal. Never did understand how they thought they could go on indefinitely without an equipment failure. And all it takes is one glitch and everyone knows your secret. But the music was pretty good. Sometimes when I go to work and it's raining I still sing "Blame it on the rain" to myself. Unfortunately I know all the words...

Tintin: Yes I read fiction, but books are somehow more real. However good an actor is, it is still... acting. Fake, and you can tell it's fake. I see how it is popular for many, but it just doesn't kick it for me. (And besides, my imagination has a much better FX department...)

wisebeard and Lynx I am envious as I know TV can be a huge time sink and while I probably don't watch as much as some I feel I watch too much. I have a few favorite shows and will DVR them so I can fast forward through commercials but still wish I didn't enjoy it as much as I do. I also have to be doing something while watching as others have mentioned, mostly knit so I feel like I am accomplishing something but still....

My hand-me-down tv broke last month, but I hardly ever turned it on anyway, so I didn't really miss it. I did watch a show on hulu last night though.

Looking forward to tonight. After work, I need to work on a music project (hired to arrange music for an audition), then a rehearsal, then to studio to work on a glass project. Maybe I'll post some pics in that artsy-fartsy thread.

I got new glasses today (yay)
They bend stuff so that when I look at a straight line it looks like a fish- eye- view (booo!)
Will drop back in at the optician tomorrow to see if it is just a matter of getting used to them or if they are wrongly made.
I'll probably be acting drunk until either thing happens :p :(
