"Have you been single your whole life?"

Well... no, not yet. I won't know until I die. :p

I am also interested in everyone's personal definition of "single": I have known some people who identify as themselves as Christians and consider themselves to be single when they are not married but are in a committed relationship.

Should a strict line be drawn between "single" and "available"? Do you consider someone who is not available but not married to still be single? What is your own definition of "single" and how long have you been in that state?
Quote from an xkcd cartoon:

"So is this it? Are we a couple now?"

"I don't know... I like you, I just... don't know."

"Well, will you be my 'it's complicated' on facebook?"

(Yeah, I would have broken up with her, but my internet connection was down.)

I've been un-single for just about 10 months.....come the 27th....lol Before that out of 60 years I was single for a good 50 of them....

Pretty much all my life lol. I think I've gone on three or four dates? It was the same person and it was about 6 years ago. But since we were just dating and not bf/gf I guess I could say I've been single my entire life? I dunno. LOL

By single, you mean technically single, right? If so, I've never been married so that would be 25 years.

To me, single is unmarried. Unavailable is a different concept.

For example, a nun would be single (perpetually) and unavailable (perpetually). Whereas I am single (perpetually....hahahahaha) and my availability varies.

Thus, as a single, never-married female, I fall squarely in the "I have been single my whole life" category. Except here's one issue that I've not seen anyone mention...

When do you start counting "single?" After all, isn't EVERYONE single at age, say, 4? And marriage isn't even a possibility. So where do we start? From somewhere in the mid-teens, from the time a woman begins to menstruate, from age 18 and the availability of legal marriage in all 50 states? I consider myself single since age 18. So, this means I've been single for 27 years.

That's a pretty big technicality.

Lots of people end up in serious relationships that aren't married yet, but they don't call themselves single.

Oh, in that case, I've been singled for all of my 32 years.

And I've been single all my life too.

Dang... that kind of stings... I'm engaged but still single? No that can't be right. Can we recast this definition?

I don't even think I should comment being just a little kid, lol, but I've been single for a little over 6 months now. It's funny. Everyone is so optimistic on this thread about how long they've been single, and yet they all seem really sad at the same time.

It's not as bad as it can sometimes seem, I suppose. I've met people who have been single for years, and they seem more satisfied than someone like me who has a fresh wound.

So I guess the saying is true. Time does heal all wounds. So for those who are like me, let's find hope in that. :) And especially to those close to my age. The likability of us not finding someone is slim. And even if we don't, we always have God and He's much more important. :D So let's all be happy and grateful for what we have. The Bible says, "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice." Philippians 4:4

We all seem really sad? I love being single! Who's sad?

I'm not sad. See? :D

lol...Melita

Your patience will be worth it in the end!

I am proud that you waited dear

Jumping in too fast is usually the reason love does not last

My prayers with you

Best dreams :)

All wounds will heal..it will...eventually..and you are still young!! Just enjoy your youth first!

I haven't had a relationship for about two and a half years. It's not like I haven't had the opportunity though. But after my last relationship I decided that I didn't want to waste my time with anyone that I couldn't have a potential future with for whatever reason. I don't want to date someone I'm not physically attracted to, and I don't want to date someone whose personality I don't like. I also don't want to date anyone who isn't at least a christian. I don't really care what type of Christian they are, but I don't want to date someone who is atheist or Mormon or anything. We need to have the same views on that stuff. I'm just picky I guess, but I'd rather be picky than waste my time and energy with someone who it just plain isn't going to work with.
