Awesome thread idea!
Thanks Kim!

Also thank you ALL for sharing tips and epic fails lol
Very helpful and I love you all for it!

Oh...if I may say
This is not MY experience
But a friend of mine has 3 children and she bought the Ninja Bullet blender thingy hoping to make the nutricious veggie drinks for her children.

Now she claims this was a failure for her budget because she claims she spent 3 times as much on groceries
She said it took 3 times as much fruits and veggies to make the drinks as opposed to cooking the veggies for her kids.

Lol now I dunno
Im just kinda sharing one persons opinion of the blender
I was tempted to buy one myself
Now...not so sure lol
:)
My grandma was from the country and about this post, she would say " Now that's her tale, I sit on mine!"

Lol

Uh...Disney Store plush dolls...and every year they do that plush sale and I succumb to their efforts! Darn you Disney!

But I wouldn't say they are a waste, they're quality plushies! I just have too many now.

I can think of a couple funny ones....

1) A calculator I needed for a math class....it was the first day of classes and as I was walking into math class, I dropped this calculator and it split in two.....the teacher ended up showing us how to do everything the long way and we never even needed to buy the calculator in the first place....even though it was on his list.

2) a weird toy alarm system that was supposed to go off when light hit it......It wasn't that much and I thought it would be fun....I ended up accidentally rewiring it and it going off whenever it was dark.....I couldn't figure out how to fix it.....I was maybe 10.....it drove my family crazy....

3) Probably my weirdest.....A laptop that eventually it started zapping me randomly....I would be typing a paper for a college class and suddenly be zapped by a lot of electricity....

4) A gps for when I had to go to Boston for a doctor visit...we ended up getting lost in the tunnels because the gps could not get a signal and kept saying "enter the tunnel and stay in the right lane"......

College. That was the biggest waste of money ever.

Let me say right here that I approve of college in general. I would be disturbed if my doctor did NOT have that degree. And the college I went to wasn't all that bad. And for many people going to college is a very good thing. But for me it was a waste.

See, I always felt a college/career path was not for me. I couldn't say why, I just felt like it wasn't what I should be doing. But family social pressure is a (something I'm not going to say because I don't use those words anymore.) They kept on and on about "As smart as you are, you should be doing something with your life." "You have so much potential and you're just working at a factory." It was like they thought I was defrauding the world because I wasn't being all I could be. So finally I said fine, I'll start going to college. I had a rough plan to be a math teacher because I like math and I'm good at explaining how to do things in as many different ways as it takes to get someone to understand it. I figured I would spend the first two years with basics that everyone has to take, just in case I wanted to change my mind about the career between now and then.

Then about halfway through the first semester God told me to go be a preacher. :/

Mind you, it wasn't someone saying "You should be a preacher" or "God is calling you to the ministry." I prayed a lot about it... okay, I argued with God a lot about it... until He finally told me to go read about Moses and I realized I had gone right down the list of Moses' excuses. And those excuses are still valid, still a part of me at all times - except when I'm preaching. (But at least it would be easy to tell if I'm preaching what Lynx thinks instead of what God said. If it came from me I wouldn't be able to talk nearly so clearly.)

I went on and finished out the semester, but my heart never was in it. But I did learn an (expensive) lesson. If I know something but don't know how I know it, first thing to do is ask God what exactly is going on here. I could have saved myself a good bit of money.

Nope, just a minor minister. I don't think I would have the tact or patience to be a pastor. Or if God wants me to eventually be a pastor He'd sure better help me develop said tact and patience.

Several years ago I bought the "Total Gym" and then sold it within a month. Thank God I bought it used (but it was like brand new) at Play It Again Sports for $300. I turned around and sold it for $300. :) Brand new it's closer to $1,000!

I've really enjoyed reading the stories here.

I always struggle with things such as whether or not education (including my own) can be a waste... but maybe that's just part of my own attempt self-justification (who wants to believe that they really threw such a vast amount of money away...)

I find marketing fascinating but am also somewhat appalled at just how successful it is, as we all have piles of junk (rummage sale, anyone?) we thought would make us younger, thinner, or more fulfilled!

Kim, just read your sig. I love M.C. Escher. My fave is drawing hands :)

Ok... back on topic. For the 1st year, my treadmill was a waste of money cuz no one used it. Now I'm getting my money's worth lol

The good thing about something like a piece of exercise equipment is that the longer you keep it, the bigger the chance you'll actually get your money's worth out of it if you figure CPW (cost per workout vs. cost per wear for fashion.) What can I say, I'm pretty good at these self-justifications! :p For instance, if you use it 300 times over the next 5 years, you've worked your cost down to $1 per workout, and you can't beat that, seeing as even a guest pass at the gym seems to be at least $10 a pop.

Of course, if you only use it 10 times a year (not that I would be guilty of that :D), it might take a few decades...

If nothing else, you can always use it as a good clothes hanger.

(Side note to MMDan--my brother had a Bowflex as well... complete with all the upgrades, beeps, and whistles, and used it regularly. Due to some major miscommunications... my parents sold it while he was out on missions trips for a few years... and to this day it's something we don't mention because my brother was not happy!)

P.S. Melita... Your post is going to inspire an entirely new thread. Keep a lookout! :)

Sigh lol....
Well can't say I made an epic fail yesterday
At least in my heart I didn't haha

Out browsing around...I found this adorable hand mirror for a dollar lol
It reminded me of a 'fairytale' mirror
I couldn't pass it up.

So I must say....this was the most joy I received for a dollar in ages.
HaHa :)

Sigh....I love those little treasures dear to our hearts that we find at times!

If you can stomach it... because it's really nauseating to hear how we are duped and by whom, check out "The Century of the Self" a BBC documentary about Edward Bernays who was Freud's American cousin. Totally enthralling and sickening.

More a personal fail than a product fail: I had a moment with my Dad and Mom in the 70's when I was a teen that was by biggest waste of money because it hurt a spirit that was my own family. I had found a really Awesome shirt, "Awesome" was a common adjective back then. It was all of multi-colored bliss made of top cotton fibers including ,[ ready for this?]....hews of purple stripes vertically.

The collar, of coarse, was as big as the shirt itself and I knew God had to have this on me. I've learned since then it really wasn't God...smile. But my Mom was a JC Penny shopper and this came from the ritzy mall. I know I have a hard time saying that word too: "Mall." Retail hike- up all the way! at a whopping 18 bucks which my Mom said "no" to. But, I was becoming a man, and again, this was Gods ordained ministry to be applied to my historical overview explained somehow on my future epitaph.....thus, I pushed...Hard serving God with boldness.! And my Mom had no chance but to cave. I had those emergency buttons with Mom like all young kids do..

A month later the shirt was so tangled up it was a total mess, then the real God went to work on me. My parents had 4 kids and as a Minister my Dad wasn't rich. I had used my moms grace for personal gain, by this time God was anywhere but in that shirt.

I have always regretted my insistence of that moment. 18 dollars was a million to them then for a shirt. My Parents have since passed, but I know they have on the 20 [priceless] dollar robes on now, for they loved me that much! And truth be told I wasn't even the one who paid for it so this doesn't even qualify!
