The saying of Augustine's I am most familiar with is:
In essentials, unity, in non-essentials, liberty, in all things, charity.
I do like that
And who doesn't know TULIP from Calvin? The problem with many of these
man made understandings is they seem to always leave something to be desired.
thats why we need to follow God and the word not men, I have many men I listen to. But very few I actually agree with everything they say.
If we blindly follow men, we get what we have in here, Blind followers

Yes some of the early true teachings did carry over but apostasy started getting real bad by the 4th century on.
The quotes that I have used came directly from Apostles mentioned in the bible such as Barnabas, and also those who were lead directly under one of the main 11 such as Ignatius and Polycarp who both studied under John.
Here are a few others:
Those who do not obey Him . . . have ceased to be His sons. – Irenaeus, Irenaeus Against Heresies, Book 4.41.3.
They only who fear the Lord and keep His commandments have life with God; but as to those who keep not His commandments, there is no life in them. Shepherd of Hermas, 2.7 (A.D. 155).

Oh, but wouldn't it be lovely to find those with whom we agree on all points? Is it even possible? I wonder...

We must remember what the Word of God says in Titus 1:16, that there will be those who profess to know God but in their works they deny Him, being abominable, being disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
The meaning here is that even if they say or do some good things if their bad teachings and bad deeds outweigh those by far then those good deeds do not amount to making them acceptable to God.

Ack, but even Paul certainly had his quarrels, didn't he? Everything was so misunderstood at first, and he was so on fire for the spreading of the Word, and whipping the Church into shape... but thank God for Paul! I shudder to think where we may have ended up without him. I can hardly tolerate those who denigrate his contribution to Christianity.

That would be almost scary,,lol.. Iron sharpens iron I always say.
True Paul had his nay sayers, but we can be 100% confident of his words which were inspired by the Lord and directed to His Church, His Body, made up of both Jew and Gentile making clear the our standing in grace...we cannot say such things of the ECFs.

I knew you'd miss the blue highlighted words; same way you miss God's perfect grace; that's why they were highlighted. People who embrace God's grace are the one's who's efforts of dialogue with legalists are efforts in futility.
