why is Columbus day still in a national holiday?

But this pretty much sums up the WHOLE POINT I'VE BEEN MAKING.
People have all of these VIEWS about him, and throw around ASSERTIONS, and even some NUMBERS...
but I just don't see much evidence backing any of it up.

It's kind of bizarre.

Both his supporters, and his detractors, just toss out "facts" with no sources to back them up.
It's really bizarre.

I've never been that interested in Columbus,
but the odd way he's presented, by both sides,
really makes me wonder what's going on, lol.

Yes it is certainly hard to get the real facts behind Columbus. As the article itself said he wasnt a perfect person by a long shot.The problem is you cant get down to the facts about him because of so much revisionist history.Almost everything I looked up had a liberal slant to it. And as the article said there are two reasons far left liberals would want to revise his history,he was a Christian and no one want to tell the truth about Muslims.Far left libs will defend Muslims at any cost. So where you you find the unvarnished, not revised truth about Columbus? I dont know.The first three pages on google were far left slanted. Almost impossible to find the truth about anyone anymore.

He does kinda have a point, though.. What if there was a day off for someone like Hitler? Should people just say "Enjoy the holiday" when the holiday refers to him? Or better yet, Halloween? Since we do know where the origins come from for Halloween.

Nobody except the very uneducated believes that Columbus was the first non-American Indian to discover the Americas.

Leif Erikson and the Vikings certainly came here first. There is good reason to believe the Chinese made it here. There is not-so good but nevertheless plausible (and fun!) reason to believe the Egyptians may have made it here.

Columbus' discovery though led to continuous and systematic colonization of the New World. That is what made the man and the civilization from which he came truly unique among the others.
 
I saw (on an alternative news show >.>) a good point about this idea thats been all over social media (apparently). They talked about how everyone is talking about how he was a monster and killed people, then they brought up how people always look at everything in the world as one group being totally evil and villainous, and the other as if they were innocent little lambs. They made the point that the natives did things like practiced slavery, and killed one another, and all of these horrible things, too. They said that Columbus didnt arrive here as some monster who destroyed the peace of the land, but was just another normal human being. I thought this was a good point.
 
Columbus was a relative saint compared to the natives that he made contact with...you know why they built all those temples?

Look no doubt this is a holiday that has passed its time ...but it was a significant event in western history ..so big deal

He kinda did...
and war and slavery was the norm of that time..even those who where enslaved ..enslaved others.

Do you understand that every group and every tribe of people has been enslaved at one time or another?

Its utter nonsense to compare Hitler to Columbus. smh Unbelievable.

Im not going to lie I cant wait for halloween its one of my top 5 holidays every year.

Not to hijack the thread, but is Halloween a religious holiday? I ask because if its not, then no worries, but if it is, then it should not be celebrated in public schools in America.

For the record, I'm conservative.
