Hey good morning Phil36!
I found it funny that the people that came up with the term "Antinomianism" were the very ones that were against the teaching of the grace of God alone for salvation. ( of course we know that His life in us causes us to lead godly lives which yield good fruit but it is His fruit in us manifesting ) so, in other words it was the legalists that coined the phrase in the first place.
They created their own "straw-man"..then beat it up and voila!...now we have "Antinomianism"...which is a very bad thing. It's kinda hilarious to watch in action actually.
The attempt to malign the grace of God by using the terms "hyper-grace" " neo-gnostic modern grace " " greasy grace " ..and other derogatory terms against the grace of Christ is simply a modern day attempt at the same thing. The Lord is in this present time is bringing to the forefront the wonderful and complete finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ on our behalf.
The end goal is not "grace"..the end goal is
knowing Jesus and
bringing Him glory in what
He has done in His perfect and complete work for us.
It reveals His great love and majesty!
Here is a little history on Antinomianism...
In Christianity, an
antinomian is one who takes the principle of
salvation by
faith and
divine grace to the point of asserting that the saved are not bound to follow the
Law of Moses.
The distinction between antinomian and other Christian views on moral law is that antinomians believe that obedience to the law is motivated by an internal principle flowing from belief rather than from any external compulsion.
The term
antinomianism emerged soon after the
Protestant Reformation (c.1517) and has historically been used as a
pejorative against Christian thinkers or sects who carried their belief in justification by faith further than was customary.
Antinomianism in
modern times is commonly seen as the theological opposite to
Legalism or
Works righteousness, the notion that obedience to religious law earns salvation. This makes antinomianism an exaggeration of
justification by faith alone.
Terms mean different things to people.
Hi Ben,
I have read your post, And to be frankly honest it is in grave error. Hyper grace re-interpritations to fit your model.. very close to Antinomianism...although I wouldn't say you are there yet
