The Law Written on Our Hearts is not the Ten Commandments

“This is the covenant I will make with them after that time,” says the Lord. “I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” (Heb 10:16)

“This is obviously a reference to the law of Moses,” says the law-preacher. “The Ten Commandments were written in stone, now they’re written in the hearts and minds of God’s people.”

Not true. Here are seventeen reasons why God has not written the Ten Commandments on your heart:

1. The law inflames sin (Rom 5:20) and the strength of sin is the law (1 Cor 15:56). Why would God want to stir up sin in your life?

2. The law condemns (2 Cor 3:9), yet there is no condemnation to those in Christ.

3. The law ministers death (2 Cor 3:7), but God wants you to enjoy abundant life.

4. Law and grace don’t mix. You are under grace, not law (Rom 6:14).

5. Living by the law will alienate you from Christ (Gal 5:4).

6. Living by the law is cheating on Jesus (Rom 7). Why would God do anything to encourage spiritual adultery?

7. We’re to live by faith but the law is not of faith (Gal 3:12). The law encourages us to depend on ourselves instead of Jesus.

8. Those who live under the law are under a curse (Gal 3:10). Why would God curse those he has blessed?

9. The law binds and enslaves (Rom 7:6), but Jesus wants you free.

10. The law keeps you immature for it makes nothing perfect or complete (Heb 7:19).

11. We have died to the law so that we may serve in the new way of the Spirit and “not in the old way of the written code” (Rom 7:6).

12. When there has been a change of priesthood, the law must be changed also (Heb 7:12). For God to write the old law on our hearts would be like saying Aaron is greater than Jesus.

13. God found fault with the law-keeping covenant and made it obsolete (Heb 8:7,13). Why would God insult his Son’s sacrifice by giving you the very thing his sacrifice rendered obsolete?

14. The law is a shadow of the good things to come and not the reality (Heb 10:1). Why would God give you the shadow instead of “the good thing”?

15. The Jews considered the law to be ordained by angels (Heb 2:2). If so, says the author of Hebrews, then it is inferior to the gospel of Jesus (Heb 1:4). Why would God give you an inferior gift?

16. Some Christians think that God gives them the law as a guide to live by, but why would God want you to repeat the mistake of the Galatians (Gal 3:2)? Why would God do anything to make you fall from grace?

17. The old law-keeping covenant required an accounting or remembering of sin, but the new covenant is characterized by God forgiving and forgetting on account of Jesus (Heb 10:17). If the law that God writes in our hearts is the law of Moses, then Jesus died for nothing.

If God has written the Ten Commandments on your heart and mind, you should be able to list all ten with no trouble. Can you? What’s the seventh commandment? You can’t do it because it’s not there, and a very good thing that is too! If the law that God writes in our hearts is the law of Moses, you’re in big trouble.

The good news is that God has written in us a far better law. The law of the spirit of Life in Christ Jesus and the law of love.

Fine then here is a simple question for all those who speak on Grace only, please all answer simply yes or no:

Do you repent every time you sin ???

In understanding God's grace, when we sin a repentance happens that acknowledges the sin and says to the Lord, 'Thank you Jesus. Thank you Lord for paying for this at the cross. Thank you my God, for your grace and mercy, for the Gospel." Our repentance is a repentance of praise, a thanksgiving towards God. Gratitude.

Lets not end there. Even when we are not in the act of sinning, we are already repenting. Repentance is a lifestyle, it is not dependent upon the moment I commit a sin and then confess. No, repentance is feeding on the truth of God's word and allowing it to transform my conduct as I behold Christ and see myself in light of His grace and identity in Him.

My repentance is not one of a boast in the flesh or an unkept promise to God. It is finding out about the victory I have in Christ, letting it get down into my spirit and walking it out. Letting the truth of His words affect my conduct by the renewal of the mind. So the answer to your question, do I repent every time I sin? No, I repent even before I sin as I continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ and allow the Lord to have His work in me.

The 10 commandments are not contrary to Christ in the least. He that walks in Christ fulfills the righteous effect of those commandments.

Yea in one word...Love ... That's the commandment of Christ and faith working by love is complete obedience to Christ...without faith and love..there is no obedience no matter how religious one tries to be.

A Christian would never have to even see the 10 commandments at all to live the Christian life.....or even know that they existed...we live by His life in us manifesting in and through us...we have nothing to do with the 10 commandments It is by Christ's life that live now..

Well that is where you are wrong because walking by Law of Christ will uphold those 10, rather you see that or not, and Paul gives clear teaching on this from Romans 13:9-10 and Romans 3:31.

What do you mean Gods Moral law as if that different than the Ten Commandments?? Where is that written?

You have to go back to how they were applied in Jewish culture because God told them through Moses how to apply the laws, when you do this you will see they have the laws split into categories and only the 10 are mentioned as God's moral law.

I can show you a list that has almost every place the 10 commandments are spoken on and upheld in the NT or new covenant if you wish ???

In the written form the 10 Commandments came with curses if the ordinance was not obeyed, but in God's moral they are placed in our hearts and minds to uphold out of love (natural way of living, not to look at them as ordinances).

Man that sounds like hyper grace ... so what part of faith working by love leaves anything undone? And is that not obedience from the heart (law written upon the heart) the New Testament clearly teaches?

It's not hyper grace because the foremost commandment is to love GOD. The love of GOD is defined as doing his commandments. So we're back to the law being the law of Christ, which means anything he says to do, we do. This is where hyper grace balks and rebels against the will of GOD because it's spirit is one of lawlessness that eschews any form of commandment or law. For example, the many admonitions to persevere in the faith and do good works, and pray for forgiveness come to mind, which things are simply ignored and even outright rejected.

Sounds like you own the identity of being a sinner, unlike others who might say sin is just something they sometimes do.

No the scriptures teach that all the law is fulfilled in love ..not that if you love God you are under the Ten Commandments ...you seem to say your not under the Ten Commandments but then you claim you are?

Well not a simple yes or no but at least you answered even though your understand of repentance is wrong.

You version of repentance above speaks of no change of mind, which is what repentance means.

You said you think Jesus for paying for that sin on the cross, that is part of acknowledging you sin, but is not repentance !!!

Is this being facetious? Just checking. I would hope that nobody who proclaims and confesses Christ would live for a "label"

So if we look at what I said again, the Law/Old Covenant is written into our heart and mind. It is the shadow and type of the new covenant and the substance of which is fulfilled in Christ. Are we under the 10 commandments? We are under the Two that Jesus gave us, which really includes the 10. The Law applies spiritually now. We have the spiritual application of the ritual and ceremonial law now, not by the letter.

Yes, I was just pointing out that we may come down too hard on "labelers" sometimes, since it is a standard way we identify all sorts of things.

Although it is undeniable that we also often use labels to put people down. So perhaps we ALL shoud consider trying to do such a thing a little lless.

Im not even sure what your saying... are you claiming your under the Ten Commandments or not?

You hit the nail on the head right here, as the problem with these other doctrines is they thing there was only 1 or 2 commandments given.

Then they try and act as if they obey those 1 or 2 they mention they will not uphold and establish the others, but that is not what Paul said or showed.

In a way by that teaching to me that they do, shows a way to excuse disobedience to the rest of what Jesus said !!!

The 10 commandments are not contrary to Christ in the least. He that walks in Christ fulfills the righteous effect of those commandments.
It's Jesus Christ who fulfilled the 'righteous effect' of the 10 commandments, and His righteousness is imputed to us. Is it us in Christ, or, Christ in us, the hope of glory?

We're under the law of Christ. Whatever he says, we do.

"Hi, Christ here." "I came to remove one set of laws for you to follow, and just replaced them with another set." "The penalty is the same for not keeping them, but that's OK, I'm using a different name for them."

Im not even sure what your saying... are you claiming your under the Ten Commandments or not?

I am saying just as the Word of God says that by walking in love (obeying the greatest 2 commandments) will uphold them as well in our lives. Because like Paul said again in Romans 3:31 we do not void the law by faith we establish it !!!

Romans 13:9-10 he says those commandments and if there be any other commandment from Christ will be fulfilled by walking in love, because love does no harm to others (meaning will not transgress the law/thus sin).

No the scriptures teach that all the law is fulfilled in love ..not that if you love God you are under the Ten Commandments ...you seem to say your not under the Ten Commandments but then you claim you are?

We can only love when we abide in GOD. We can only abide in GOD when we keep his commandments. I'm not talking about the law of Moses.

"Hi, Christ here." "I came to remove one set of laws for you to follow, and just replaced them with another set." "The penalty is the same for not keeping them, but that's OK, I'm using a different name for them."

This is why you show you don't understand the written from the moral and need to study the topic more before getting involved in such debates !!!

"Hi, Christ here." "I came to remove one set of laws for you to follow, and just replaced them with another set." "The penalty is the same for not keeping them, but that's OK, I'm using a different name for them."

It's called, if you don't abide in me, you will be broken off and discarded.

It's Jesus Christ who fulfilled the 'righteous effect' of the 10 commandments, and His righteousness is imputed to us. Is it us in Christ, or, Christ in us, the hope of glory?

Even if you accept his understanding its really very simple fulfilled in one word ..love ..and there is no condemnation on top of that when we fail....
