I agree that we should educate students a little better in English and I don't think it should be required to take Spanish. However, I do see huge benefits to learning the language, just like Willie says.
It's kinda like saying what's the point in learning European History? Or African History? Yes, we live in the USA but it also benefits the student to learn other parts of history, not just their own country's. I feel that Spanish is actually even more beneficial because we actually get to use the skill in a job.
Whether we like it or not (I think we need to secure our borders...but it doesn't look like that's happening), immigrants are coming into the USA in large numbers. To be ready for the competitive job market, it really helps to know Spanish.
