Ugh. Everybody at work is complaining about EVERYBODY and every THING. Or at least, everybody who is not currently here. Apparently the only perfect people in the world are the ones who are currently in the store. Everyone else, including... no, especially the people employed here who are not in the store at this time, are the lowest scum that ever inflicted its presence on the earth.

And I know, now I'm complaining about their complaining. :-/
...But at the end of my work day when I was sweeping the trash up from the lot, a mockingbird was sitting on the roof just tearing it up. Bless its feathered little heart, that was perfect timing. :)

And to make it even better, I was listening to it sing and I wondered idly if it ever did a cat-bird's "mew" sound. And three seconds later it did.

The thing is: I continue on loving on them. I'm making an effort to show nothing but love towards the management. Of course I am venting to my family, my boyfriend, you guys....but I am showing genuine care about them. It takes a lot for me to really hate someone.

I am there to work. And even though they have done nothing but show hate towards me, I will repay evil with good.

It's difficult.

Well, think about Jesus for a minute, Shiney:

*picture taken from "Passion of the Christ" - I know this is NOT the real Jesus, but wanted a visual to help us focus here*

So, he's on this hill, talking to people, like He would do at times...

...and said (and this is paraphrasing using multiple translations):

"You've heard it said, 'Love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.' ...but I'm telling you that you need to love your enemy and pray for those that persecute you. That makes you like children of Your Father in Heaven, because He sends rain and causes the sun to rise on both evil and good, righteous and unrighteous! (Hint: That's Grace.)

If you only love people who love you, than what reward, or benefit, or grace, or credit, or thanks is there in that to you? Even full-blown sinners love people that love them. Tax-Collectors (people that would often extort others, mistreating them) even do that. ...and if you only greet 'your own' people, then how are you different from anybody else? Don't even Pagans (people who believe in other gods or don't believe in God) do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your Father is perfect."

*more or less taken from Matthew 5 & Luke 6*

So, here's the thing... when you choose to love someone (because love is a choice) in the difficult situations (like what you're in), you're being like Christ, and that should at least be a little bit encouraging as you face the time to go to work again.

^_^ Just some food for thought, Shiner. Shine that light!

Having been in that kind of pain before I definitely understand the caller's persistence.

QUESTIONS FOR ALL OUR HARD-WORKING PEOPLE IN THE MEDICAL FIELD OUT THERE, PLEASE!

Hey all,

I need some advice on 2 things:

1. Can anyone recommend an alternative over-the-counter sleep remedy to melatonin? I've had problems with insomnia for 15 years, and I finally started taking melatonin last year. My doctor said, If it works, don't change it. However, the nightmares are becoming more than I can stand, including one dream in which a terrorist put a live bomb in my hand and it exploded... to being a in a restaurant in which a group of mobsters came and sprayed everyone in the place, including myself, with bullets.

I've tried OTC "sleeping pills" and Nyquil but they just make me nauseous and groggy--and I still don't sleep. What do you all think of Valerian root and/or any other OTC remedies out there?

2. For anyone who knows about vision problems--I got clocked in the face with a very heavy box tonight which pushed my glasses right into my face and put a lot of quick, sharp pressure on my left eye. For the last 6 hours, I've have constant "floaters" in my eye--I can "see" distinct particles, some of them quite large, floating back and forth every time I blink, making it seem like everything is "flashing" in that eye.

Is this something I should get checked out? I've heard it can be a sign of a detached retina. I was thinking of trying to get into the eye doctor tomorrow morning.

Thanks so much for any help or advice you can give. I appreciate it very much!!

Well Kim Possible,

I have 'floaters' myself, but not related to immediate eye injury (that I know of). I'm not really an optometrist, so you should probably go see one if the problem persists.

As for the insomnia, there are several things:

Are you exerting yourself to where you are physically tired? Often an overabundance of energy can cause restlessness or sleeplessness.

Are you looking at backlit screens? Backlit screens (computers, phones, tablets, etc) project something called 'blue light' which kills the melatonin in our bodies, and thus can cause sleeplessness.

Is your brain busy? High brain activity (and adversely emotional activity) has robbed many (including me) of sleep on countless occasions. There's no 'sure-fire' way to relax a stimulated brain, but often people will read, listen to music, meditate, or try other ways of 'unwinding' enough to fall asleep.

Are you in a dark, quiet room? Often, a lot of our problem is too much light or noise, and that can cause sleeplessness. The same can be true to temperature (being to hot or cold) or comfort level (not feeling safe, bed too hard or soft, etc).

Now, if all these basics are out of the way, a few plants that help induce sleep (whether through tea, lotion, pill, smell, having the plant in your room, etc):

Chamomile, Lavender, Jasmine, Aloe, Snake Plant

There are also certain foods that either wake you up or make you tired. Examples of the later are:

Sugar, Starch, Gluten, Warm Milk (including types like Almond Milk)

Reece,

You are a doll, as always. Thank you for taking the time to make such a detailed reply!

I had to laugh when you mentioned "High Brain Activity", seeing as, at times, it could be argued as to whether or not I have "ANY" brain activity going at all!!! :p

I'm guilty of most everything you mentioned (I work nights, so that's a challenge in and of itself). You name it, I'm guilty. Backlit screen? (Laptop... check.) Light and noise? Check. But as I said, I work nights, so... sleeping during the day is an additional challenge. Not necessarily highly active ;), but restless brain? Check. Occasional :p "late night" (midday) snacks? Guilty! But I've had this problem for many years, even when I worked days and even when I try to cut back on everything and practice better "sleep hygiene" habits. I'm gonna have to take a look at trying to make a better effort of it, though.

Thank you for all your advice, I'm going to look into the things you suggested, and I welcome any other thoughts anyone else might have as well.

Thank you! :)

This is a bit of a continuation of 'what do men look for in women' and some other posts I've made in threads about this 'certain quality' in some female characters (literary and media/movie, anime etc) that is somewhat rare and yet very attractive and appealing.

So, thinking more on what I've said and this 'moe' subject... I HAVE actually met people in real life like this. They didn't stand out immediately because they are so few, but there are these types of women.

I can see why they'd be labeled as 'naive' or 'innocent', because they tend to be overly positive and optimistic. They look for the best and beauty in life and people. An example for those of you who might be Harry Potter fans is Lily, Harry's mother.

They've got a strong caring, nurturing type spirit about them towards other people. They're normally (at least as literature and media portrays them) beautiful on the inside as much as the outside. Strong-willed and stubborn, yet sort of vulnerable and really authentic/straight forward with most people (especially the closer you are to them).

Several people I've known in life have come to mind like this: Summer, Randy (yes, there are some men like this too), Kelsey, Melissa, and I'm sure even more that I'm just not remembering...

Those of us that are cynical and jaded, trying to pass it off as 'experienced' or 'wise', tend to belittle or be annoyed by or seek to 'correct' these individuals at times, but don't! That loving kindness...that optimistic, outgoing idealism... the world needs more of that! That IS the ideal. That's what those of us who are jaded and cynical now WANTED and HOPED for things to be like!

I think that's part of that quality or set of qualities I was talking about that 'makes you want to protect them'. It's like this precious, rare little candle of positive love that you want to protect from the darkness and cold winds. They make things around them a little brighter.

Do get it checked out, just in case. At least mention it to your doctor along with the insomnia bit and see what he/ she says.

as for the insomnia itself:
Valerina (Valerian to you?) is a natural herb sold in pill form, it works for me, you could give it a try (warning, they STINK!)

Also, though you probably know:
- Avoid coffee, tea and sugary drinks for several hours before bed- time.
- Try to go for a short walk a while before going to bed
- Take a warm shower or bath

I find warm milk helps, though I don't know if it is "real" or just a placebo

But if it was so much of pain, shouldn't the caller have gone to an ER instead?
Don't know about the US, but in Norway and UK, unless it is something dangerous, one is supposed to see the GP.
You'll just be advised to take painkillers. (to be honest I understand them, as people go to the ER with the common cold and think they are dying :p )

They could if they don't mind spending a few hours in the ER waiting room, and then another hour or more for a doctor to actually come see them after being taken into the ward. Been there, done that.

Good morning everyone, it's a new day... New work day.. New sunrise everything starts over fresh. :)

Not that everything is 'right' in my world.. But it's slowly getting better. Talking it out to close friends and being in prayer about it all, really helps. :)

Also... I love my daddy who's in heaven. ^_^

So, breakfast... hmmm... deep fried mcgriddles!

Do not try this at home. But if you have a friend who works at a McD's, DO get him to get you some deep fried mcgriddles. They taste like a funnel cake. If you don't have a friend who works at a McD's, don't bother - it's not on the menu and I doubt they will deep fry them at customer's request.

Hi wwjd!

Thank you very much for your suggestions! I'm going to the eye doctor today to have my eyes checked just in case, and we have Valerian root in pill form here, so I'm going to pick some of that up as well.

I've tried warm milk before and it didn't seem to have much effect, but I'm willing to try it again! (The problem is, I may just pair it with a cookie... :))

I hope your eye is ok and I'm sorry that happened to you, Kim. Were you crouched down when it happened? I'm just wondering if someone was dumb enough to be carrying a box at head level without being able to see what was in front of them. Also, I am sure worker's comp would go into effect here so you might not need to worry about medical costs.

Anyone else notice the influx of incendiary threads lately (threads where heated discussions come about)? Seems like a wave of them recently.
