You can only communicate when you have a common basis and reason for talking. It helps to have a common goal or reason.

For example our common goal for posting on this thread might be that we want to talk about communication. Perhaps share ways to improve communication, our views on how technology has helped our hindered relationships and communication, etc.

I think it would be nice to teach ourselves and our children cell phone etiquette...no texting while walking, driving or biking, ...spend time for face to face conversation..learn to read body language..

Communication is more than just words and as many have already stated, listening is key.
If you may not talk as you want to or have to follow someone's rules how can you communicate on an equal level?
Impossible. I shut up for almost all my life and said nothing until I found internet and learned to talk irl too. In this thread it may not be appreciated but irl it is.

I had one woman who asked me to make a map for her. So I said sure and laughed a bit while talking . I always laugh to be friendly. She got mad. Why are you laughing? That was more than 10 years ago. Never talked to her anymore other than yes m'm with a serious face. Don't hate her, but it's simply impossible to talk with someone like that.

I think you make jokes to cover your insecurities,coby...

I should be honest and say I and my son who was looking over my shoulder thought the first cartoon post kind of funny.

However, it kind of snowballed out of control afterwards and became more about "expressing yourself" than the topic at hand.

There are understood rules to any productive converation.

One major one is not talking over someone and tying what you say back to the main topic...which is communication.

More than anything most people what to be heard...but then who does the listening?

You need to forgive the lady for hurting your feelings and not understanding your nervous laughter.

The first step to mending miscommunication is forgiveness. It happened 10 years ago.

You can't change what others say or do, but we can change how we respond and through God's guidance become better people able to communicate His love to others without misunderstanding and offense.

For example how did you respond to her question of why you are laughing?

Did you tell her it was because you were happy to be in her presence and you wanted to be friendly?

If I had to guess she probably thought you were laughing at her not knowing and she felt stupid for having to ask for directions.

Look beyond your hurt and see others pain. That is what God calls us to do.

Remember when people were comfortable talking face to face?

Remember when you had the phone in the kitchen with the looooong extension cord?

Remember pay phones?

Remember paper rolodexes?

Remember having to remember someones # to call them?

Remember when you had to actually talk to communicate your thoughts, instead of texting, emailing, IM'ing, emoticons etc.?

I wanted to start this thread to get us talking about how communication has changed for the worst...and the better...and how this tipping point in communication is reflective in our biblical worldview.

Thoughts?

I personally believe that this progressive and convenient shift in communication opens up HUGE opportunity for problems and these problems can only get worst fast. SO MANY of the problems that we see in our society are in some way or another associated with bad communication.

Also, questions I would like generate are: What is good communication? And what is bad communication?
Remember when you picked up the phone and the operator said, "Number, please?"

Of course I forgave her. She just asked for a map and got one. I just remembered because it was so weird. I could get along with everyone there. She's not interested in one on one chit chatting with people like me and the rest of the work people creating maps. She became a boss of course. I just listen and friendly smile at the jokes she makes now when she talks to the whole group.

Look I just answered and someone else answered and then it was not appreciated and someone could have friendly asked us to stop so I commented on that, doesn't matter, I don't have more to say on the subject. I communicate different. I'm an expert in a specific area of communication. I make maps and a picture says more than 1000 words. Others are specialized in talking. That's okay. Talk about it. There are other threads for lighthearted conversation, which is good. You can't only talk about hell and serious subjects and a burden for the lost all day.

Since this is in Bible study:
I remember when I had no computer and instead spent time with Him.
Once read a book, Jesus speaks.
Ever since man lost his normal communication with Me he started to use words. Words, words, words, the result was Babel.

Don't use unnessesary words when you pray, like the gentiles do.

Good communication is listening.

Bad communication is talking over people or as someone stated earlier...pretending to listen as you plan what you will say next.

I like being able to download and listen to audio sermons on all verses of the Bible.

I don't think communication between God and man has really changed, so I don't see how modern technology changes our biblical world view.

On forums you also need to listen to the Lord sometimes.
Once on another forum there was a lighthearted thread about is 40 old? So we were all joking around. No that's a younger juvenile. I posted some pics too. All of a sudden one guy got mad. And you christians blablabla that's why I hate you. It made no sense at all. It wasn't in any way offensive those pics. He got mad at me. I was childish and I dunno what.
Lol but he was 3 years younger than me so I said what you want you youngster? You should have respect for my grey hair.
Then God said: No, remove it and say sorry to him. So I genuinely did and removed the text and all the pics for him.
He pm'd me. Still angry. I was not a christian because I got saved when I asked God for signs. He had done a suicide attempt. I said oh me too, that's why I like to make fun.
Had a good talk, then he said sorry it was his fault. I did nothing wrong. He just had brain damage. I was so glad I listened.
So if anyone here is offended by my posts I'm terribly sorry. Can't remove em here though.

Ever read the story of Nero? I don't think Paul was prophesying about the future.

I agree - Paul wasn't just talking about the days to come but they were living in the 'last days' as well.
(1 John 2:18) 18 Little children, it is the last hour. Just as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. This is how we know it is the last hour.

I really don't think people are worse today. We've never been good for so long, it doesn't dawn on many what good is.
I agree to the fact that sin is sin and as long as there are people, nothing is new under the sun. I do believe that sin grows exceedingly wicked and matures, thus God's wrath pouring out. So I'm inclined to believe that today people are worse than they were yesterday.

Online forums aren't like going to someone's house, unless the owner of the site post. It's more like congregating in a public park. Lots of people to talk to, try and find some you want to talk to, but go home because someone rubs you the wrong way? That's an option but not the only option.

What if that person is a bully? All he learns is if he bullies everyone let's him.

What if someone is being hurtful? If we leave, then he never finds out he is hurtful?

What if he's teaching younger folks garbage? We just let the younger folks think that's the truth?

I wouldn't even do that in someone else's house.

As for rude? I really think that word is overused today. "Rude" has come to mean "you didn't let me have my own way." I gave up on that word after it was used on me once to often when I wasn't being rude. (Not to be confused with people calling me that when I AM rude.) Thin aisles in a store, a woman was reading the ingredients on boxes of cereal and her cart was blocking the aisle. She was reading. Seemed impolite to make her lose her place simply to do something I could do, so I brought her cart back closer to her and was called "rude" for the effort. Another time I was checking out at a store, and afterward the cashier said, "Happy Mother's Day" to me. I'm not a mom. I thought it was nice and didn't want to say that, but also didn't want to assume she was a mom either, so I thanked her. (Some women really do get hurt if they wanted to be a mom but never had a child. I'm not one of them, but I've had friends like that, so I don't discount that tender spot.) I was "rude" for not saying it back.

That's about when I gave up on the word "rude." Communicate. If everyone uses whatever word they want to say something, there is no more communications.

Sorry. That sounded like a holier-than-thou rant, but it is simply where we disagree. Not hating you, thinking you're a bully, thinking you're hurtful, or trying to teach me something. Simply disagreeing. (And it might help to know I have a degree in communications, so this is one of my favorite topics.)
I think the point that Ariel82 was making is that, the purpose of this thread is to provoke thought and seriously consider the subject and share. I believe the same thing - that if someone post something, and if its a certain manner in which they post it, I'll follow their lead since they started it. We can look at this thread as a bible study in church - I find it hard to believe that silliness and foolishness volleyed back and forth would be tolerated in a bible study in a church. That same level of respect and decency should be applied anywhere. I just think people in general get lax when they are anonymous on the internet. Hopefully we can keep building on the the subject of communication, looking forward to it.

You bring up something HUGE that has been grossly neglected in our society. Since their have been so many technological advances and shifts in our daily lives, there also needs to be method changes to the way we live our lives and manage them. Texting etiquette classes would definitely be in order - has anyone ever heard of such a thing yet? I haven't I don't believe. Also people are noticing that emailing, texting, Facebook, news...aka information overload is ruining their lives and their relationships, and they're starting to like you said, take time away from the information overload and invest time back into spending face time with loved ones.

Does anyone see the connection between a loss of human engagement (due to some degree by technological advancements) and a loss of human decency, respect and ultimately a loss of value on human life? We're raising kids who are completely inept at life...its no wonder this generation has no value for life and feels entitled to do things like kill masses of people for whatever their selfish reasons...or go around knocking people out in the streets for fun. Does anyone see the state that we are in? Where is the church...where are the Christians??

I think the rot set in when mobile phones stopped being just phones and started to aquire games, cameras and other things that distract us. Instead of being a useful tool they have become an obsessive addiction for many people.
Very good insight. So true.
