I spent some time in BDF (Bible Discussion Forum) this morning and I'm truly impressed how many know everything about everything. (Not sarcasm... this time.) There are some things in the Lord I simply seem incapable of getting, and I've tried.

I get it takes me a long time to learn complex things. (I spent a whole summer writing out the times table once a day, because I couldn't remember them any other way. I have read the rules for passed vs. past so often, I actually saved the fourth try in my Favorites folder. It's titled, "Taking Another Pass on Pass." I still have to read that every time I want to use one of those words. I cannot get the eight parts of speech. I have a degree in Communications and have spent months last year just trying to learn that! Still don't get it. This hard to get stuff, so this really isn't kidding around either.) But I'd feel better thinking I'm not the only one who doesn't get stuff about the Bible either. I ask that people not try to educate those of us who admit to not getting it, unless you have a very easy way of explaining it, because all the complex ways and all the long answers haven't sunk in.

So? What can't you get?

And to give you an idea of what I mean, I'll start with what I don't get.

-- "Angel of God." Two men I trust on here -- Marc and oldhermit -- have told me that sometimes in the OT, "Angel of God" means God himself. And sometimes it doesn't. I don't get how to know which is which.

-- Soul and spirit. I don't get how these are two different things, what the difference is, or how to tell. I've read the words in original language and looked up definitions for their use. Even tried a word study. STILL don't get it!

-- Oldhermit (and I genuinely trust OldHermit) tried to teach me how to generalize the scriptures to get an overall sense of what they're saying in all of them. He even let me do a specific study on a small topic. (Melchizedek. Only mentioned twice in all of scripture, so this shouldn't have been all that hard. And I did study as much as I could find out before telling OH what I learned.) Then he tried to show me how to generalize what I learned for all of the Bible. Nada! Had I not checked word by word that 99.5% of the words he used were truly English, (the other .5% were in original language lol), I might swear he wasn't teaching me in English. He really was.

So, please. Just to make sure I'm not the only one who doesn't get stuff, would you mind telling what you don't get? And, no. Not stuff everyone doesn't get, (like trinity or why God chose us), the stuff that it seems like we ought to get if we just try harder. I don't like feeling I'm all alone in the don't-get-it section.

I don't get how God justice works when he treats people differently (ie "but for Cain and his offering he had no regard" )
Does that mean that I mean nothing to God just because I can't do things as perfectly as others?

You don't really think that do you? Remember there is only ONE perfect one. ALL others fail in that regard. What you must always remember is that God knows a person's heart. So you can run around all day and say "Praise Jesus" - if you don't mean it, it means nothing to God.

Great topic!! I have like 20... but just to start

WHY didn't John the Baptist know who Jesus was if they were related? Certainly they visited each other over the 20+ years they were growing up... both moms had a great connection and knew each of them had a very special gift from God inside of them... so just one visit and that was it???

I think Melchizidek is one of the biggest mysteries in the whole bible.

Where did he come from? Where did he go? How did he get to be a priest and how did Abraham trust that he was?

I don't know about Melchizidek, except what is in Hebrews 7 and Genesis. Which isn't much at all.

Same with Enoch. More information would have been nice. Maybe less in Leviticus and more for Enoch and Melchizidek...

Ah, but the mystery of things in the bible are good. It keeps us reading and thinking. And digging. And pondering.

Depleted, I really really like you. You are so down to earth. And actually, you have a lot of common spiritual sense which can be lacking in so many people.

I don't understand many things either and find my brain circling around sometimes until it is knotted. Yet I have a total faith that the Holy Spirit will make real to me that which I should know. Most of the time I hear "keep it simple"...

Just a small one for me. The book of Revelation.

I have been a part of several classes on it... my dad used to teach a class on it, and I still don't know how to take/interpret it. I have a sort of general idea of what it's talking about, but.... when you go to 4 different classes on it, and get 6 different "interpretations" of it...

I hate to admit it, but I've sort of gotten to the point of "I don't care about any hidden meanings, I'm just trying to get closer to Jesus, and will hang on for the ride"....

Melchizidek here too. I haven't spent time reading about it, so there's that. I just wonder if and how Melchizidek was a representation of God or something. I heard that from a preacher I forgot.

Oh and this too! Well, I'd like to think I've grown a little in this area. At least I hope. I mean, for Cain, specifically, I do believe that both he and Abel knew what sacrifice pleases God. I mean earlier in Genesis, after the fall, innocent blood was shed (the first shedding of blood) to clothe Adam and Eve. So I think, and this is very subjective, Cain knew exactly what pleased God yet still chose to offer his crops instead of shedding blood for his sin.

There's still somethings I get confused with when it comes to God's justice, and I'm pretty sure there's a lot more I have no idea about.

That I get because I moved a lot as a teen. So did Jesus. I'm not sure where Mary and Joseph lived before they had to go to Bethlehem for the census. (The Bible might say, but I forgot.) But that's where Mary and Anne hung out at first. And then, for some strange reason Joseph and Mary stayed in Bethlehem after being counted for the census. They stayed long enough that Jesus was close to two when Herod got it in his mind to kill all male children two and under. (The Magi didn't get there overnight.)

So the family skedaddled to Egypt. For how long? No idea.

And where was Anne raising John during all this? Also no idea. But they were separated some time during Jesus' early life, so maybe the couses just never reconnected.

I have cousins down in MS. Never met them until I was 16. (Well, I have pictures with them earlier, but I was still a baby.) Related, but circumstances kept us apart for quite some time. I didn't really get to know them until I was in my 30's.

(Please tell me that was easy enough to understand. It's not like it's passed vs. past, right?)

I did learn as much as I can about him. (Still don't get how Jesus and Mel were connected, but that's my "slow learner" problem.) I just don't know how to generalize about the whole Bible based on Mel alone. Somehow, OH can say something good and true about the whole of the Bible and the whole of God from something as small a part as Melchizedek.

That seven pronged candlestick! Right? Don't get it. May never ever get it. lol

I can tell you the closest I got to it came from the commentary "More than Conquerors." Had it for a minute there. It made perfect sense. And then a day later? Nada!

Actually you really made me think about the time line...all you said is 100% so it's definitely plausible.

And yes that was awesome!

Thank You

If I knew what I don't know I would know quite a bit.
If I put everything I know in Column A and everything I don't know in Column B, B would take reams of paper. Not sure A even needs one ream. lol

I've always wondered where Jesus' family's vast fortune went to. I understand that they had to finance their trip to Egypt and the few years they lived there, but what happened to all the rest of the expensive gifts the Magi brought?
