Meh, not quite as dire and melodramatic as the title, but it got your attention, didn't it? And it is a real question, just not as horrible as it sounds. (Or maybe it is.)

I just read someone say that when they were a new believer the first thing they did was study the Bible constantly. And then they were "attacked." (Paraphrased to protect the innocent.) I think they meant Satan started niggling their mind to try and draw them away from God. (Yes, I see my nouns aren't matching the possessive forms, but I'm trying not to point fingers at the person who got me thinking. Not even hinting at gender.)

Which made me remember when I was first a believer. Same kind of thing happened to me, but I never considered it an attack from Satan. More of circumstances unfolding, and me being me, it did pull me away from God quickly.

In my case, I became a believer three months before Mom died. (This was in 1972, so it's not something to go off and feel sorry about anymore. It's old history.) Now eight months before that, Mom had taken the remaining kids with her when she left Dad. (Oldest brother was already away for college, and my two youngest siblings came from a different mom, so that means Mom took three of us away from Dad.) And she took us across country to live with her mom (Gram) until she could create a new life for us.

But, two weeks later, she was diagnosed with a cancer that would kill her quickly. (No one knows if she knew she had cancer before the move and that was her impetus to move then. Her family has told me this often enough. She refused to tell anyone if the two things were connected.)

So, when she died, we were left with a choice -- move back with Dad or fight to stay with family we had moved to. Mom's two brothers lived nearby, and they were both married with kids, so we landed in a network of family intentionally, and they were willing to fight to keep us with them, if that's what we wanted. But my younger brother was five, so he had no choice but to go back with Dad, and I'm younger brother's godmother, so I promised to raise him if anything would happen to Mom, so I didn't feel like I had any choice but to move back with Dad.

It was messy, and all the Christian family I had come to know in those short three months were left behind with no church to go to (but the Catholic Church I was raised in), and Dad lived in a subdivision far from the town, I was barely 16, so didn't have a car to go anywhere, so I was left with nothing but God and my Bible.

And frankly, lots of the believers who taught me what the Bible said had prayed Mom would be miraculously healed, (some actually laid hands on her and prayed when she was in the hospital, so everything I was taught I believed), so what I was left with was the false "truth" that God out-and-out lied to me. (They were the ones who told me if I believe it will happen. I did. It didn't. I was a wreck with no one to fix that massive mistake.)

Until someone said they were attacked shortly after being a believer, I just thought that's how life goes. Its 44 years later, and I really did work out those friends were wrong vs. God lied, so I did get beyond the backsliding I zipped into quickly.

But I'm really asking. Were you "attacked" shortly after you became a believer? Is that a thing? Is it a common thing? What's your story? Yea, nah, and go for the details if you want. I am interested.

I love your openness to share, we should all take at leaf out ya book :)

Also sorry to hear that you went through all of that, cant imagine how painful that must of been.
Me and my grandma had this conversation earlier about healing, About praying for people and in Jesus name and then them not getting healed.

I didn't have an answer really to that and I still don't, Im just learning to trust God with every second of my day knowing that he holds everything.
So, When I first became a Christian did I get attacked? I think that when we become born again we are more aware of spiritual attacks because now we know we have an enemy, Im not sure whether he attacks us more though.. he may up his anti but he is constantly against us and has been since day one... Praise God that through Jesus we have the victory and are equipped with every weapon through the word to combat him daily.. Attack is all he has got... then what ?!

Bless you my sister. Keep sharing your heart with us xxxx

Hi Depleted,

I must say that not long after I became a believer, I allowed myself to get drawn into associating with some people that I should have just steered clear from. No, it wasn't drinking, drugs or any other illegal activities, but I was "enticed" by them all the same. And looking back on it, I know that the Lord removed them from my life as like the pruning of a tree.

I even "poo-pooed" on my mom and sister when they were only trying to warn me. Not only that, but I got showered with attention and my sister got the "leftovers" or "scraps". I was acting more like a non-believer then than I did when I actually was one. I feel that God was testing me, and I failed miserably. However, God in His mercy rescued me. I say that God tested me because Satan can only do what God allows him to do.

I was given the "whole armor of God" at the moment I became a believer, but I had not fully learned how to use it at that time.

My mom could see trouble coming a mile away, but she wanted me to find out for myself and learn a lesson from it. God bless her!

When I was new in faith I suddenly experienced a lot of supernatural encounters dreams and a couple visions and I admit I didn't know how speak well as a Christian at the time but I shared everything I experienced and was called a wolf in sheeps clothing some said I am leading God's sheep to the gates of hell but mainly I was accused of being a false prophet and teacher

I was attacked. By my teachers at school. Lol. But I must admit that the problem was mostly me. I went out sharing what I knew, thinking it was all the wisdom in the world and assuming that no one else knew what I knew. I was 15. >.< As for supernatural encounters. I did have a series of dreams of a lady in white, who turned out to be an evil spirit of my past. At least that's how my pastor explained it to me. And I had it after trying to 'help' a classmate who used to be possessed by evil spirits. I spent a lot of time with her and prayed for her, without much armor lol.

Little knowledge is dangerous.

You're probably giving me too much credit here. I've been a believer for 44 years and this is the first time I'm checking into spiritual attacks. I've always contributed my sinful stupidity to me being sinfully stupid and stubborn.

Yup. Something about backsliding really did make me worse than a nonbeliever. I am still utterly ashamed how stupid I was.

Someone once said that teenagers think their parents have to be the stupidest people on earth. And when they hit about 19-21, they can't figure out how their parents got so smart so quickly. I suspect that's not just limited to parents, but then again, I only have my own experience as a teen to know what I was thinking. Still, sounds like you were thinking the same kind of thing.

A parent and a child are the perfect example of us and God. Children often times think their parents rules and ways of doing things are dumb and make no sense and they throw fits and get mad not knowing how their parents are in fact protecting them and being wise.

Man this sounds so familiar.......

I think I/we were attacked continuously, before and during coming to Christ.

I think as the veil comes off I/we begin to notice it more distinctly.

Before coming to Christ we were just led to believe that those attacks weren't attacks but thoughts and actions of our actual selves... Part of the lie/deception.

Iam being attacked spiritually by Satan and cohorts all the time. When you are not, be careful because Satan don't consider you a threat to him.
I wonder what would classify as being attacked by satan. I am a firm believer in cause and effect only because I am usually the cause of the effect that makes things hard.
It's easy to blame satan for our struggles and our hardships but honestly I usually point the finger to myself before I ever begin to point it to satan.

If I don't take responsibility for my own mistakes and for me not listening to father and I just blame it satan then I will never grow and learn and mature as a Christian or a person. I have not hardly ever considered being attacked by satan I owned up to my mistakes and I moved forward and grew as believer and a Christian. I have rarely been attacked by a demonic force, people can say they are being attacked by him but I have been attacked by him personally met him face to face I have been attacked by demons have met them and am a witness to the power the name Jesus has when one cries out to him.

the lack of teaching in church leaves even older Christians in distress...if it were not g\for the Holy Spirit, the devil would have his way with all of us

we do wrestle and if you are not aware of that? it's in Ephesians

All I am saying is that we often times cause our own problems and life in general has suffering has illness and yes satan does attack us but I wouldn't confuse his attacks with our own doing and with how suffering is as much part of life as peace and love.

I was just responding to the fact that he does attack us and in agreement with what you say, he gets to attack BECAUSE of sins when we create our own problems!

If we leave the door open, it's an invitation

But let's also remember the parable of the different types of ground that the seed of the word falls on

The devil's aim is to snatch it away and if we are new to the faith or weak in the faith, and we have no teaching, we may (as many do) think we have displeased God in some way or perhaps He has left us or whatever our weakness may be

However, the most basic of teaching should be our position in Christ and that salvation has not just brought us into the kingdom of God but also saved us FROM the kingdom of darkness

Jesus has done all we need to walk in Him and be free...some of us do have to fight harder...I for one, have fought quite a bit because of my family history but God is faithful and just and when we call on His name, He will provide

Well in all honesty I have yet to fully understand the whole satan attacking us and us causing our own problems, which is why the question in my mind still remains what classifies as satan attacking us

well if you mean a full out frontal assault like Job suffered, I would suspect those are rarer

however, we can be sure if we are committed to following Christ, we are going to have some fiery darts shot our way

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. I Peter 5:8

The Bible readily identifies the devil as our enemy...it follows that we will then be attacked...that does not mean he personally attacks us; he has 'minions' who are glad to help out there as the Bible describes many encounters with the devil in both testaments by those whose faith is in God

10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
Ephesians 6

How do you know it's Satan and not your stupidity/stubbornness getting you in trouble?
