Hey guys I am taking a class on AG and COGIC History and Polity at my Bible College and today we were asked a debate question from our professor on being slain in the spirit.

I am NOT saying he believes this, this is just the positon he laid out for us to start the debate

He said that every record he knows of , of people falling down or falling out was from demonic oppression or possesstion, or an act of the devil... A classmate of mine who is from Africa also said the same, he said that in Africa whenever someone fell out it was from something demonic taking place, so when he came to the states and seen Christians doing this he was skeptical..

Now my question is WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE... What are your experiences....

Personally I have seen people "be slain in the spirit" people who are very Godly people... so is this a legitimate claim to the Holy Spirit or can this be seen as something demonic or can it be both, but which one just has to be distinguished in what aspect it is being used in.

Thanks

I believe my body is a temple of the holy Spirit. The holy spirit lives within me & there is no room for demons there... this doesnt meant they dont attack externally and effect your lives and tempt you to agrieve the holy spirit but there are no "demons" in me to be exorcised. makes me wonder too... if its new its not true! I note that none of the deciples had demons cast out & that would have been an event worthy of mention in Gods word dontchya think?

U won't find "slain in the spirit" in the word of God. Nor will u find people falling down with people standing behind them to catch them.

It's pretty simple actually. It's a simple human response that may vary from person to person when one encounters the Holy Spirit in a very powerful spiritual way.

However, I have personally observed (and this is just a personal observation) that most people whom I know who that been "slain in the spirit" are indeed people who have admittingly wrestled with various strongholds (which could be viewed as oppression) in their lives. So in my estimation when one is "slain in the spirit", there is indeed some serious warfare going on there in the spiritual realm. Given the testimonies of many people that I have talked to that have experienced this phenomina, they will tell you that all they can remember is feeling an overwhealming presence of God / Love as if they were being craddled inside the hands of God Himself. So, in my opinion, it is safe to assume that when one is "slain in the spirit" that it is the Holy Spirit is at work in that person's life on such a deep spiritual, emotional and / or mental level inwhich the person in question does not know how to respond except submit themselves completely which for some involves a state of unconseousness.

The reason being that Christians in that era walked in an understanding of the Holy Spirit that the modern church apparently struggles with. Back in that era when one gave themselves to Jesus, they gave themselves over completely. You never heard about a believer struggling with Lust or some other oppressive behaviour (stronghold) that is common place today. Believers then gave everything to follow after Jesus. The majority of today's believers struggle with whether or not they should pay their tithes.

The difference between then and now is that they operated in a level of faith that we have since lost because we have compromised God's word with a bunch of man made religious rhetoric.

I was slain in the spirit for the first time last tuesday. What happened is that I was at a worship event and i fell over when I was on my knees and couldnt open my eyes or move for awhile. It shouldnt be pressed, and when it happened to me its not like anybody was there and prayed for me, God just wanted it to happen then. During this, I had a vision, so God can use this to bring us into His kingdom on a more real level. Because after this happened, even though my vision was very scary, I had sooo much energy and couldnt hold it in, from the joy of the Lord. So just thought I would mention that! God Bless all of ya'll

As far as "Visions" go, I have seen many (although none of which I would consider to be scary), so this is one area where I may be able to help shed some light on the situation. Often times "visions" are God's way of showing the believer a glimpse what is to come (most likely for the life of that believer or a particular congregation of believers) or what could possibly happen if the believer / congregation continues to follow a destructive pattern. However, these visions must be measured up to the Word of God in order to gauge their possible validity.

On the other hand, would I accept another man's vision as "new gospel" that the entire Body of Christ should adhere to? Absolutely not. Just look at what happened with Catholics, Mormons, and the Jehova's Witness. However, if a dear and trusted personal friend in Christ came to me with a vision then I would most likely listen to what he had to say and compare it to God's Word to ensure the possibility of validity.

Please note that various "strongholds" or "oppression" can develop in a person's life when a person has engauged in a certain negative behavior that it has become a pattern or an actual addiction which is very hard to break and / or they can result from years of severe mental, physical, or emotional abuse possibly brought on by someone close to that person who most likely was inhabited by a demonic spirit.

Contrary to what certain denominations teach, we can overcome these strongholds in this lifetime with the help of the Holy Spirit either through prayer and / or a change in lifestyle (sometimes required to break certain addictions if one is not completely delivered by the Holy Spirit through prayer).

Oh, I believe you. However, just wait until the nay-sayers break into the convo. They're going have a field day on the whole "scary vision" thing which is why I decided to explain how visions operate.

Personally I feel that it is a lack of faith however I'm sure they will strongly disagree. *lol* Because if they were to agree that your experience was from God then they would begin to feel very uncomfortable if they have to explain why they have never had a vision or operate in the spiritual gifts. I tend to look at it from the same perspective as the bible points out in the Gospels where the pharisees were so out of sinc with who Jesus was and what He was doing that they accused Jesus of being possessed by "the prince of devils". I feel that same religious spirit / mindset lives strongly in the church today as it pertains to the workings and giftings of the Holy Spirit.

In response to the first post about slain in the Spirit...

It's never a good argument to say "because the devil can or can't do this, then God must or must not be able to do this". That's making God can or can't do something based on what the devil does.

There's no recorded instances in the bible of being slain in the Spirit as you see in some churches today. However it is certainly not a new modern day thing, it has occurred throughout church history.
However, there are ecstatic experiences recorded in the bible associated with the Spirit of God (see Saul and the Prophets for example). I believe what happens is when our natural body encounters the power of God it reacts in some way. If the devil can influence a person's body , then logically God can as well. It makes no sense to say that the devil can do all these things to the body, but God who is greater than the Devil cannot?

Personally I have seen people "be slain in the spirit" people who are very Godly people... so is this a legitimate claim to the Holy Spirit or can this be seen as something demonic or can it be both, but which one just has to be distinguished in what aspect it is being used in.
Be careful with this one we don't want to attribute something of God to be the devil, that's blasphemy against the Spirit.

The little test to apply is:

1Co 12:3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says Jesus is a curse, and that no one can say that Jesus is Lord, but by the Holy Spirit.

It's about transformation, not manifestation. If someone gets up from it changed and praising God and living more in the will of God, then you better watch it if you say it's not of God.

Look at the fruits and not the falling.

In many instances today, where there is a mass group of people meeting, much of this could be group think. People may fall backwards on purpose because they know they'll be caught.

I say get rid of the catchers. If God is really doing it, then they'll land safe and secure. If it's something man made, then they'll land and have a headache and know enough to not do it again.

*lol* Still

Some people do tend to get caught up in the moment. Unfortunately, I've seen it happen more than a few times.

However, I have seen others fall back and land is some very strange places. I recall one lady landing under a pew (padded bench). The strange thing is the only way she could've gotten there was to have literally gone through the pew. Yet, of all the people who were there to witness it, no heard her it the floor much less hit the pew. We all just looked at each other in amazement and walked away once we realized she was fine.

i so hear ya become_the_generation..
i first got 'slain in the spirit' when i was in highschool and since then ive been experiencing that, sometimes you start speaking in tongues or prophesying.
i don't see anything that makes it demonic, its like the best time in the world!! u would want to stop the time ya know and just stay like that forever, you keep on praising God for His goodness and Majesty.. and if it is demonic then it so doesnt make sense, why would a demon want you to worship God! when you get 'slain in the spirit' nothing changes, i mean, u worship the same God.

Slain in the Spirit is a reality that is happening today
in meetings occupied by Spirit filled, tongue talking true believers. It is very dangerous to come against this Work of the Holy Spirit. The pharisees were charging the works that Jesus was doing of the devil.
here is Jesus reply,Mark3:28-29

I have been in meetings, when the man of God was so annointed by the Holy Spirit, when he layed hands upon the person being prayed for the fire of Gods presence hit the person, and that person fell to his knees, and sometimes yes they are caught . Jesus knows what He is doing!
In the OT,in the house of the Lord, the Glory of God filled the house,His presence was so strong, nobody could do anything.
1Kings 8:10-11
2chronicles 5:13-14

Would to God more of Gods people were slain in the Spirit!

There is no such language in the pages of the New Testament. There is no example of such behavior in the New Testament. Some of the groups who claim such phenomena contradict each other.

I do not believe in modern day demon possession, so I would not attribute such to them. But given that the Holy Spirit through Paul commanded that things be done decently and in order, I reject the notion that they are of God.

The only choice left that I see is hypersuggestion and emotionalism run amuck.
