Hey Everyone,

I know some people might be thinking that threads about women's beauty products are out of place here, but the Singles Forum is all about helping the two genders better understand each other.

My last thread was all about trying to get people to see that some of the things we worry about might not even be noticed by other people.

The point of this thread is to help people understand why some women might choose to use makeup.

Now let me say that guys, we LOVE it when you tell us we don't need makeup. If it's a sincere compliment, please keep telling us that!! We appreciate it!! But some of us are using it for very practical purposes, such as the two videos I will include. If you date a woman who chooses to wear makeup, she will appreciate your understanding and support of her choice. Yes, sometimes, makeup is overdone.

But I've often wondered if guys are aware of how life-changing makeup can actually be.

This first video is of a young woman who has a port wine stain birthmark on her face. I first became aware of these types of birthmarks when I was a kid and knew a girl who had one on her leg. She said that she was very fortunate, because most times, this type of mark apparently shows up on the face rather than another part of the body.

You don't have to watch the entire video. You can easily click towards the beginning and then at the end to see the effect.

So, what was your reaction to seeing this?

To make this a little easier to read, please give me a minute to write a second post with the next video.

Hold on...

Now, in this second video, please understand that it also doubles as a commercial for a professional makeup artist.

However, I chose this specific video because this was very much what my skin looked like in high school without makeup. Sometimes it was much worse. My end result wasn't looking like a model, of course, but the end demonstration of the illusion I could create with makeup is very similar.

I had a healthy lifestyle and took good care of my skin and physical well-being. We all know that the cause of acne is different for different people, and for me, it turns out I had an imbalance that the doctors didn't think about testing until I was in my early 30's. Today my skin looks much better, but I still have some spots and marks I like to smooth out. Someone I once met from CC commented on the fact that I "don't wear makeup", but the truth is, I wear it every day if I will be seen by other people.

I know how much skin problems can be painful, both physically and emotionally. My mother was regularly ridiculed in high school, and it makes me angry that people were so quick to judge a condition she couldn't help.

Whenever I see people around me whom I know are suffering with skin problems, it brings out a very soft place in my heart, and I always try to pray for them.

What do you think of the results?

One of the reasons I'm making this post is because I hope that if I should meet a special someone, he'll understand why such things are important to me, and why I'm spending the money on them. (I can't use the things in the drugstore--they just make my skin worse. I found out I have to buy better quality brands, and what I use costs about $100 and will last about 8 months, sometimes up to a year.)

I would NEVER ask him to buy it for me. I would just work and earn the money myself. But, I would greatly appreciate his support as to why I chose to do this for myself.

What are your thoughts, comments, and reactions to seeing these two videos?

I haven't finished the first video. But as a woman, I think, although not all, some men should know that we mostly wear makeup for ourselves, not for their approval or their appreciation. Lol! So I would probably be hurt if my man doesn't respect that. But there are times when we do put on some more make up to impress.

*bats fake eyelashes*

In my case, I always have to use lipstick because I am very pale xD. And without it, I feel either like a ghost or naked. And my lips are very dry, so I use lipbalm everyday. I put on foundation because I'm not pleased with the blemishes on my face! Lol. Wearing mascara, I have to admit, was an influence from the media and magazines xD

Some guys love make up. Heard one American preacher say he didn't leave the house if his wife hadn't used her magic box.

"Guys, if you hate makeup..."

Hate is a rather strong word. If you ask me what I prefer, I prefer reality over an illusion. Even if I know it is an illusion, I still prefer reality. If you ask me if I hate it, there's no place for me to hate it or love it - it's your face, not mine, your choice to wear it. If the (hypothetical) woman I love chose to wear makeup, that would be her choice.

For myself, I have a dimple + birthmark exactly on my left earlobe where it looks like I got my ear pierced, and people have asked me if I got my ear pierced since I was a child. If the (theoretical) woman I love ever got near my ear with her makeup box she would wind up wearing the whole box. :p In that case, yes I would hate makeup.

On the other hand, two weeks ago my grandmother took a header over a pet door and fell flat on her face... literally. Twenty stitches in her forehead and amazing bruises all over her face. Sunday morning before church a nice person came over and applied some makeup to cover up the worst of the marks. She still looked a bit puffy in the face, still got a few comments about it, but nowhere near the shock people would have gotten if they had seen the real bruises. Sometimes makeup has a good use.

As for the examples - with the port wine stain I can see how she would want to cover it up. The second example, gotta say I prefer reality over illusion. But again, it's her choice to wear it. *shrug* Hate doesn't really come into play.

Lynx -- I do think it's very refreshing that you prefer reality :). Many kudos for that. I do have to say that for me personally, if I can "hide" a zit, I most certainly will choose to do so ;), but that's just me and i think it's really cool that someone says he'd prefer the not-as-pretty truth.

As far as hate goes... A while back, we had a thread written by a guy that ran a very long time and was entitled something like, "Why I Hate Makeup" with many male posters agreeing, so that's what I was thinking of when I wrote this.

For Wise and everyone who apparently have never heard of port wine stains -- well, that's part of the purpose of these threads... so that we all learn together. :)

You may very well see or meet someone who has this type of mark--now you'll know what it is and be able to offer your compassion.

I loooove makeup! Two of my favorite youtube channels were MichellePhan and Juicystar07. True story.

I also enjoy watching makeovers but only some of them turn out really good.

Hmm... maybe not compassion. That may be the last thing they want. But maybe talk to them like a normal person, instead of making a cheap joke about how they look. (Or maybe that's what you meant by compassion... there's a fine line between that and pity.)

Where I work there's this one guy who comes in all the time. He looks like his face got half melted off, like he had been in a fire or got acid spilled on his face or something. What really happened I don't know because I never have asked. I just say hi on my way in like I don't notice his skin. He's a nice guy.

That's pretty amazing....It like hides it completely. She should use makeup b/c she can avoid judgemental glances/questions about her face....but it sad she has to use so much makeup to cover up her face...i guess each person has their burdens to carry in this life...

To paraphrase Lynx's "I have a song for that" :)--Zero, I have a thread coming for that sometime in the future.

And Lynx--yes, I'm definitely not meaning pity--I think you know what I'm saying.

Some people, unfortunately, will stare at, mistreat, or make fun of people with skin conditions--whether it's a birth mark, skin discoloration (I've waited on a few people with darker skin tones that had splotchy light patches... it was probably vitiligo), psoriasis, or acne (in other words, something they probably can't help), and I'm hoping a thread like this might help someone understand a condition they didn't know much about before.

(Have I also mentioned that deep down inside my soul, there's a wanna-be dermatologist lingering somewhere...)

I was hit by a car when I was 14. (hands were in my hoodie pocket) so I pretty much flew through the air and landed on my face. To say I had road rash is an understatement. :(

The most damage was to my nose....but everything was a mess. My nose not only had to be allowed to heal for a few days before they manually re-broke it to set it properly, but they had to reattatch it and do a a couple of skin graft surgeries.

For the most part, it has healed great. But the tip of my nose where they did the skin grafts to promote regrowth where there was missing tissue will flare up with dark redness at times that (I am ashamed to admit) bothers me to the point where I do use make up.

Now, from a pure vanity standpoint....I do love a good mascara. ;)

But for the most part, I am who I am....take me or leave me. Make up or no make up.

As long as you don't call me Linksys I'm okay. Man, the security issues that brand of routers has, all in the name of being easy to use...

Makeup does have valid uses, mostly for smoothing the way in society. A feature like the aforementioned wine stain birthmark is nothing to be ashamed of, but covering it up can still be beneficial to avoid a lot of stares and questions and generally smooth out the feature owner's day. Basically, hiding it avoids a lot of questions and other junk.

It's kind of like when I go out to eat. (Y'all might not see the similarity right off, but bear with me.) I drink a glass of water half an hour before eating and I don't drink with meals. It's a lot more healthy for me but every time I go out to eat the waiter questions me multiple times about it - "Nothing to drink?" and after I've placed my order, "And you want nothing to drink, right?" and after the waiter has taken everyone else's order and is about to leave the table, "Are you sure you don't want anything to drink?" My uncle Fred, a man who is wise in many things, said, "Just order a glass of water and I'll drink it." I'm not embarrassed about not drinking with meals, but ordering a glass of water I'll never use cuts down on the junk.
