Hey Everyone,

I have a friend who always refers to himself as a nerd. Now of course, I can't let him have dibs, so today I reminded him, "Hey, we're BOTH nerds!"

However, he tried to put me in a corner by saying, "You're a geek, not a nerd. You have to know computers in order to be a nerd."

Talk about the ULTIMATE BURN!!! Maybe what this person was REALLY saying was, "Sorry, Seoul, you're just not smart enough to qualify as a nerd." :p;):D

I know there are a ton of videos out there explaining the difference ("Epic Rap Battle: Geek Vs. Nerd"), but what does our CC community say?

* What makes someone a supposed geek or a nerd?

* What's the actually DIFFERENCE between a geek and a nerd?

* What automatically DISQUALIFIES a person for either category?

Help me figure out which one I am. :D

(This thread is all meant in fun. I've seen myself as a nerd all my life and have learned to embrace that title. ;) However, my friend's comment has given me a bit of an identity crisis.)

Hmm I thought geeks were the ones that knew the computers and were the sci-fi fans as where nerds were the ones who know random bullcrap about stuff like books and are the high fantasy fans. That's how I always thought of it anyways. Idk rightly though, I've been called both and more.

A geek has an obsessive level of interest and knowledge about a specific subject/s.

A nerd is someone who is both really smart and socially awkward.

Someone can be both a nerd and a geek.

I partially agree with zero here...Geeks are 1 dimensional in knowledge like say obsessed with superman comics for example all they talk is super man this and that...

nerd is one who has diverse interests and knowledge in many fields, maybe not as an expert but is generally aware of many things that others don't care to know or would like to but are too lazy to learn....

I'm a nerd and even though i don't care for socializing too much I wouldn't say I'm socially awkward.....

Geeks are not nerds.....and vice versa

Nerds are cooler once you get to know them they have many dimensions/interests in their life....geeks are just stuck on something and never talk anything else....oh btw I know about computers so that makes me a nerd b/c I'm not obsessed with computers....I like other things...

Hmm... I'm obsessively fixated on SEVERAL things and can talk about all of them (maybe not expertly, but I can sure talk! :))

I'm clumsy but I wouldn't say I'm socially awkward.

Where would this put me?

I honestly thought it was the reverse of this. Like nerds are just people who are obsessive about things like fantasy and sci fi and technology and other junk, where a geek is someone whos generally smart or at least bookwormy and socially awkward.

Though, whether its nerd thats smarts or geek, you cant really call yourself that : p Its kinda weird to be a self proclaimed "genius" : p

This confuses me even more. I've done like all this except for clubbing. Now I don't know where I stand. Am I socialite, a socially awkward nerd, or an anti-social geek?

The smartest person on CC is that guy who reads but never posts!

I have no problems with your newly desired title.

You're probably one of those hip dudes all the girls congregate around like in HS strumming the guitar on the lunch table and all the ladies congregate around to listen like your James Taylor singing rock-abye sweet baby james lol....

I'm just joking GIS, you sound like you're not a nerd or geek maybe balanced or modern cool guy? But seriously you probably did have some ladies in your company because you seem too "normal" geeks/nerds aren't "normal" but who gets to decide anyway huh? huh? (see me raising hands while turning red in outrage as to who gets to define "normal") ....eventually calms down drinks some ice water and settles back down with slow breathing...)

Lol this greatly humored me because it is like the total opposite of reality. Lol the ladies actually don't like me or ever consider me. None of them are interested in me. I'd put it like this to best describe in part me in relation to society. I'm in solitude, totally alone but surrounded by people. Always trying to love the people and help them even at my own expense, even selling my things and giving to my people in need expecting no recompense, listening to their problems, trying to help them in many ways, giving them whatever they ask for that is within my authority to give, but no one loves me or even tries. Despite my own personal beliefs I'm a pretty open guy I'm pretty accepting of people of all walks, but they never accept me, I am always rejected for some reason.

EDIT:

Also no I don't play guitar, I am not a musician but I am a major music aficionado. I might be a fool and boast a little that I reckon I have a pretty keen ear for music and know more music than the average yokel.

Hmm... yea I can identify with you....I'm surrounded by people but feel in solitude as well...like no one cares to help but just take is the vibe i'm getting from your post...and I agree most people these days are just takers but don't look to invest in others (like you do by selling stuff/helping others). Sadly i too have not had much success with the opposite sex...in school I was always ignored by them even if they were my friends they still didn't like me as a relationship bf/gf thing always the ice cold friend zone....wasn't for lack of trying or being open to it either...and then the ones who sometimes like you are the really socially awkward stalker types where you feel overwhelmed like you need a parachute to jump out of this plane to get away from the person.....and you're pulling the rip cord....lol....it's just not natural....so I'm in your same boat brother! I was just joking around with the guitar thing b/c in school we had a guy who literally had a dang guitar tethered to him all the time and would strum before school, after school during school....to attract ladies...and it did work (he was in hs and attracting middleschool girls lol but none of our hs girls fell for it...in fact I as his friend would playfully tease him about it ....but it was interesting in HS to see the "tactics" dudes use to get ladies....I never cared for being a fraud...always be myself...which I guess is boring...lol...oh well life goes on....

Dude don't dismiss JT (no not justin timber-fake yea i purposefully mispelled it) he's got some good songs like "you got a friend in me" and "fire and rain" which ironically fire and rain is about his time in a mental institution recieving ECT electro convulsion therapy - i may have that abbrev wrong but basically electric shock therapy ....the fire is the actual shock of electricity and then they gave the inmates a cold shower to "wake them up" b/c the brain would be fuzzy/asleep....there is your nerd fact for the day about this song....

Deja view. The feeling you have read this thread before...

Actually I don't remember any of the other geek vs. nerd threads coming to any definitive conclusion either. But it was always interesting seeing where they wound up.
