If you're referring to evil spirits, the verses that turningleaf shared in post #2, are all really good.
If you're referring to the Holy Spirit, the book of Acts is a good place to start.
God is a Spirit - John 4:24 says, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth."
Angels are Spirits - Hebrews 1:14 says, "Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?"
We are Spirits - Genesis 1:26 Then God said, "Let Us make mankind in Our image, in Our likeness...
We are spiritually dead until we "inherit salvation", or become believers. It's only our spirits that can go to heaven. Our bodies will die and then we'll get new bodies in heaven.
I can't wait! ...hehe
We are told to test the spirits - I John 4:1-3, "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world."
Now about ghost...
Hebrews 9:27 states - "Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,"
So, there's no ghost wondering the earth like many people believe. This verse plaining states that we immediately face judgment. A few years ago, I was actually asking God about ghost. "Why are there ghost if we must face judgment as soon as we die? How are there ghost here?" I plainly heard Him tell me that what we call ghost are evil spirit playing tricks on us. They've been here since the time of creation so they know what's happened in the past and can pretend to be acting like someone from the past to play with our minds. Can you just see them laughing at us, because they were able to get people to believe in ghost? Not cool!
NOT to be confused with Visions.
People can have visions and/or dreams of past loved ones. If you see a vision and it brings fear, then I wouldn't say that it was something of God. "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." 2 Tim 1:7 But be careful with this too. We don't seek out these visions. If you do, you are falling under those verses that are posted in #2. The Bible tells us what we are to be seeking. "But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you." Matt 6:33
I hope this helps.
Very good post, thank you, Ghosts are really just demons impersonating a person that was once alive.
I gathered some facts and scripture myself:

Of Ghosts and Fallen Angels
The notion that the Lord Jesus would leave someone’s soul (the immortal sprit that everyone has regardless of what they believe) roaming this physical world with the living, after their bodies have expired is entirely unscriptural as it is written in Hebrews 9:27 –
“And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment,…”
Therefore, to entertain the idea that there are roaming sprits of the departed among us is
not something that we know is permissible by the Lord Jesus (Matthew 28:18), you are either here and alive, or there after your body expires, with no in-between.
You can read about an instance in Mark 6:47-50 where the disciples were rowing across the lake late at night, then Jesus walking across the water out to them. The disciples mistook Jesus for a ghost –
“But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;…” (Mark 6:49 - parallels and similar also found in Matthew 14:26, Luke 24:37 & John 6:19)
I don’t think this scripture is acknowledging that ghosts exist, since the Greek term gives us the English word “phantom” (MacArthur commentary pg 1218). You can look up that word on your own book of choice, but the Encarta Dictionary defines it as –
(adjective) “
1.) imagined and not real 2.) claimed to exist to trick people ”
In R.C Sproul’s Reformation Study Bible, the footnote reads the word “phantasm” was carrying the connotation of “
superstitious imagination ” (pg 1426). I find it interesting that the gospel writers used the term that was sure to convey the idea that it was the wild imagination of the apostles in the boat.
Matthew Henry, one of the most well known and respected biblical expositors of all time, writes in his commentary on the sixth chapter of the Gospel of Mark –
“
We often perplex and frighten ourselves with phantasms, the creatures of our own fancy and imagination.” (Volume 5 pg 398)
John Gill, a well known Baptist commentator, writes in his commentary on Matthew 14:26 (Matthew’s account of the event) –
“
they were troubled, saying it is a spirit - a nocturnal apparition, a demon in human form.”
Gill continues to write that the Disciples in the boat might have been thinking of the rule held by the Pharisees, that it was forbidden to acknowledge someone in the dark, even a friend, due to the fact that the person you are acknowledging might actually be a demon. (Volume 7 pg 166)
This moves us into a very real, and extremely dangerous subject of demons. They are able to disguise themselves and deceive people of their true being, like their master the Devil (John 8:44).
In the apostle Paul’s first letter to the Corinthian believers, he warns of demons playing the part of an pagan god through an idol –
“No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons.” (1[SUP]st[/SUP] Corinthians 10:20)
John MacArthur writes in his commentary on 1[SUP]st[/SUP] Corinthians 10:19-20 – “
If pagan worshipers believe an idol is a god, demons act out the part of the imagined god.” So why not through a “ghost” someone believes to be present? There is no true power of deity in the idol, but it is now a tool of deception for the very real demonic sprit.
In the apostle Paul’s second letter to the Corinthian believers, he warns about deceitful workers and false apostles at large in the world –
[SUP]“[/SUP][SUP]
13[/SUP] For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. [SUP]
14[/SUP] No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light
. [SUP]
15[/SUP] Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds.” (2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Corinthians 11:13-15)
These fallen angels are
very real and use Ouija boards, Séances and occult rituals to deceive the user into thinking they are in contact with “the other side”. Some people are mourning the loss of a loved one that has died, and in the person’s grief, loss and vulnerable emotional state they try to contact their loved one in this way, opening themselves up to be exploited. Some people look for blessings from “nature sprits” and some even look for self serving things like lottery numbers. This leaves you wide open for deception and direct contact with demons that will prey upon your desires.
Please remember that there is no scriptural basis for the existence of ghosts, but demons are all over scripture. Their evil, hate and lies are well documented in scripture. I used Naves Topical Bible (use your favorite) and I looked up the word “spirit” and this is what I found –

SPIRIT
–
Called “the inner man,” Ro 7:22; Eph 3:16
–
See ANGELS
–
See DEMONS
–
See HOLY SPIRIT
–
See MAN, A SPIRIT
–
See SATAN
So by all means, please be very aware of what you are opening yourself up to, be aware that there seems to be “
degrees of wickedness among the devils, as well as among men ” as John Gill writes about Luke 11:26 (pg 604 vol. 7), and also the demon that was determined to do as much damage that he could to the boy, while the demon was still able and in control, as found in Luke 9:42.
There are many popular TV programs today that deal with ghost hunting, speaking with ghosts and the supernatural. some are fictional dramas and others are “reality shows”, but none of them are really “ghosts”, the demons just use that as a disguise to appear harmless.
As for the things that “go bump in the night”, of course it does not mean these “bumps” are all demons, (in my case squirrels in the attic) but reflect back on what Matthew Henry said. After all, when watching a scary movie or TV program what is your mind prone to be fixed on?
I’ll say it again, be warned, do not go seeking them. They are not ghosts, they are demons, fallen angels that are here carrying out the devil’s work. The only Ghost or Spirit you should be seeking is the Holy Sprit, (also known as the Holy Ghost) the third member of the Trinity.
Pray that the Holy Sprit would reveal the truth of the scriptures, and provide you wisdom and strength to walk in the ways of our Lord Jesus Christ.
