Recently, I was part of a conversation where someone asked, "Can satan read our minds"? Key word here is, "READ"; different from whispering thoughts into our heads. I'd like to get your take on this and please provide scripture to back up your views. Thank you. :)

Not sure there is a specific verse but the devil isn't all knowing or omnipresent like God is. So no,the devil cannot read our thoughts. There is no where in the Bible that indicates that he can.

Are we to believe that he just guesses what happens to push each individual's temptation buttons? (Of billions and billions of people?)

I say - NO. The enemy cannot read our minds but they do have a history of us and our past which they try to condemn us with by "throwing fiery darts" at us whenever they can.

Thoughts are like birds - you can't stop them from flying by our heads but we can stop them from making a nest in our heads
. Thoughts may come and go but thoughts not put into words or actions - die unborn.

I say, "No." :) But he is adept at reading and anticipating human behavior.

The Bible instructs us to
“put on the full armor of God so that
you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes”
(Eph. 6:11 NIV).

“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the
one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world”
(1 John 4:4 NIV).

“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world.
On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself
up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every
thought and make it obedient to Christ”
(2 Cor. 10:4–5 NIV).

No idea and I couldn't care less tbh. If he's so bored that he wants to know all my thoughts, good luck! Think it will annoy him if he can and you just keep meditating on what is good.

satan has been around for more years than we have I imagine he has studied human body language and human nature. he also studies our individual areas that tempt us. he is a master of deception so we without Jesus are easy prey.

In order to overcome every time we - the prey - must Pray and ask God to help us be overcomers. The Lord's prayer even says lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil....

I think this is a good question and i am not sure i could be wrong but I would say no.
To be all knowing is an attribute only to the Godhead and we see this in scripture.

John 13:3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;

  • [*=left]Psalm 147:5 — [God's] understanding is infinite.
[*=left]Ezekiel 11:5 — Then the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me, and said to me, "Speak! 'Thus says the Lord: "Thus you have said, O house of Israel; for I know the things that come into your mind"'."
[*=left]Acts 15:18 — "Known to God from all eternity are all His works."
[*=left]Romans 11:33 — Oh the depth of His riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!
[*=left]1 John 3:20 — For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.
[*=left]Hebrews 4:13 — And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
[*=left]Romans 2:16 — God will judge the secret things of men by Jesus Christ, according to [Paul's] gospel.
When we say God is omniscient, we mean that He knows all that there is to know. There is nothing that is outside the scope of His conception, understanding, or attention. God neither studies nor learns for one cannot increase a knowledge that is already insurmountable. Neither does probability exist for God; all things either are or are not in His perspective

It is very important to understand who our adversary the Devil is, and what he is able to do. We must be careful not to attribute to him abilities and honors that belong to God and Him alone. The Bible says the following about the limitations of the Devil...

the devil is not Gods
Opposite

Approaches As A Subordinate
Cannot Tempt Without God's Permission Satan was unable to tempt Jesus without the permission of the Holy Spirit.
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil (Matthew 4:1).
Cannot Read Our Thoughts
Because he is a created being, Satan cannot read our thoughts. He is not all-knowing like the LORD. It is God alone that knows everything - including our thoughts.

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; His understanding is unsearchable (Isaiah 40:28).

then hear in heaven Your dwelling place, forgive, act, and render to all whose hearts You know - according to all their ways, for only You know what is in every human heart - (1 Kings 8:39)
The LORD knows our thoughts (Psalm 94:11).

They've been watching human behavior. They listen to everything you say so basically they can build their own database on how you think. I remember calling school and saying that I would be absent and my brother called and said he was going to be absent. It was amazing that he logically came up with the same excuse that I had given so we were predictable in a scary way.

The other question is whether the angels have other abilities such as brain scans. Our brains light up on MRI imaging when we think so the question is whether they can see it from the spiritual realm. The reason is, lie detector tests are based on electrical activity and I wonder why the accuser of our brothers can accuse us before the throne of God. Is it because they know when people are lying?

There are also verbal clues and body language that they can watch as well.
Do you pray out loud? Maybe you're telling them more than you can hide from them. Do you write in a diary? Do they read your email or listen to your phone conversations? Do you talk all of the time?

Yes but he had no idea about God's thoughts. Jesus even said it that He would raise again. It was in the Bible.
i think the idea of the Devil reading our mind is very interesting when I look at the temptation of our Lord The devil is recorded as asking " IF you be " Son of God or it could also be said "as you have said" you have said you are the son of God all would apply But it was in each case something that was either said or made known . I do not see anywhere in scripture the devil foreknowing anything but I do see that in Job he was going to and fro searching Hmmm IF the devil foreknown why did he have to search ? Boom drop the mic..... walk away

I do see what you're saying. However, let me play devil's advocate here for a bit, if you will, and ask a question that one may ask. :)

What if he can not read minds? What if all he does is just keep trying different temptations until he finds the one that works and keeps using that one, in different ways, in attempt to pull us away from God?

Interesting Character to check out is this guy, john dee... He supposedly predicted queen Mary's death, and later started into search for the philosophers stone and talking with demons.. He had his own secret dwelling place on authority of queen Elizabeth. I think he still holds the biggest library in his area as well. Ultimately he destroyed his life but his story should be known.

hmm FYI in the Book of Gen: 3 he used a good one it is clear that only way the devil is able to tempt us is when we are drawn away by a lustful desire as james 1:14 -16 it worked in the garden ti works today :)

Satan cannot read minds. 1 Kings 8:39 indicates only God knows the heart of man.

1 Kings 8:39 Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)

Scripture warns us to guard our hearts and to stay our minds on the Word of God. It is the Word of God which is able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

satan walks about as a roaring lion seeking those he may devour --- so he is on the lookout for those who are in a position to be pounced upon. We are warned many, many times throughout Scripture to be careful what we say. If the words that come out of our mouths are words from God, our adversary does not have a toehold in our lives.

Exactly, he's got the rap sheet & can anticipate strategy to tempt..
