The Bible instructs us to
“put on the full armor of God so that
you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes”

I am in full agreement with you. Based on my understanding of the bible I don't believe that Satan can read our thoughts but is very adept at figuring out who we are and bases his strategy and focus on our weak areas.
 
That brings us in line with a variant of Pascal's Wager.
If he can't read out minds, great... so what? Life simply goes on.
But, if he CAN, then we might be smart to stay very aware of that fact. He could raise some real trouble for us if we were oblivious to that.

My point was, his temptation/deception is very real...does it matter if he can actually hear our thoughts or if he just knows human nature that well? If we're aware of how real his attacks are, I'd say no, it doesn't.

I don't believe satan can read our minds for all the reasons given above, not the least of which is the fact that he is not omniscient - only God is.

Could he read Jesus' mind when Jesus was being tempted in the desert? No. Or it would not have been necessary for him to ask the questions or make statements to Him, such as: If You Are The Son of God, Command That These Stones Become Bread. If satan could read His mind, he would have known the answer ahead of time. No?

And as to the fear part of your statement. If I'm already thinking as satan would want me to, he's already won. And if I'm not, who cares what he thinks.

I used to think the devil could read my mind, but I’m not really sure. All I know is that he is the father of lies and trickery and he is good at his job. But he cannot do any more than we allow him to, if we are washed in the Blood of Jesus. If we rebuke him in the name of Jesus he has to go. The scripture says submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.8
When I was first saved, I didn’t know what a strong spiritual battle I was in for. I had to learn the voice of the Shepherd (Jesus) and the voice of the enemy. It was hard at first to differentiate my own thoughts from the things that the enemy would put into my mind. I started thinking things that I had never thought before in my life, and it really troubled me until I realized it was the voice of the enemy.

I had to learn not to dwell on any bad thought whether it be mine or just something that the enemy had threw at me. I had to learn to immediately rebuke the enemy and withdraw from any thought that went against the word of God.
 
I think its a good question..because when I started hearing Gods voice ..I understood that every voice was not coming from me and the enemy started talking to me as well ...in fact I have ask God this very question because I couldn't understand what I was hearing and it did seem the enemy was reading my thoughts.

how can someone expect that the sherobim that covered cant hear, his demons, normal angels.. thoughts always go to the unseen world and spoken ones go to seen and unseen.
 
Interesting conversation. Willie was spot on with his earlier post in my opinion.

Something I would add is that last year when my elderly
aunt was in and out of hospital and ill at home, she often reverted to
a confused delirious state, mostly due to all the medical problems. Her
blood work was way out of sync and she had problems with low oxygen levels.


While in this state she would say the most awful things imaginable, it was
like she was a stranger just coming out with the most vile twisted things.
Everything anyone said to her was repeated back in a very manipulative
awful way. It seemed like her comments were targeted, deliberately
aimed at being as hurtful as possible, as if she was putting an evil twist
on every scenerio.

It was just awful at the time. People kept asking me if she had dementia, but
she was bringing up lots of stuff from the past about everyone and twisting
it around. I honestly did wonder if in her delirium, there was something
demonic going on. I can't even describe half of the things she was saying, it was
so bad. Several times she said to me that if she had a gun she would
shoot me and that she would do time for me. She came out with the
most abusive language immaginable but in reality she hardly ever swears.
This was coming from an elderly 80 year old Christian lady who is not as close
to Jesus as she could be, but she is a Christian nevertheless. She has never
done anything criminal in her entire life.

Even today now she is much better she cannot remember anything about
last year at all. It is all just a blur to her.

Anyway, throughout this time I spent a lot of time praying for her and so did many
others. The more we prayed the more vile she seemed to get!

One close friend sent me a text at one point, saying she was praying for my aunt
and just got this thought of "stop praying, the more you prayer the worse we will
make it, we have spent a life time working on this situation". She said she
was suddenly overcome by fear and a sense of dread at this point. But she
was more determined than ever to prayer for my aunt - and so was I.

This really disturbed me, as it seemed spot on based on my Aunt's behaviour and
the awful way she was bringing up the past. It made me realise that
Satan is quite happy to go with the steady drip drip in our lives in his attempts
to hold us captive if that is want it takes and he will use every situation to
his advantage.

I do think demons can read our minds and also are fully aware of our
actions and experiences.

That is why we are to put on the full armour of God and take every thought captive.
Not just for one day or a week or a month, but for our entire lives.

It is a life long battle, we can never afford to give up. But in Jesus the
battle is already won, that is why all we have to do is stand, rather then charge.
If we don't stand and instead if we plunge head long into the fight, then
instead of relying on Jesus' victory and standing with the full armour of
God on, we end up running ahead and fighting the battle on our own and
we can't win it that way.

Did you know by the way, that when we put on the armour of God, it really is
his armour.


Isaiah 59:16-17 AMP
[16] And He saw that there was no man and wondered that there was no
intercessor no one to intervene on behalf of truth and right; therefore His
own arm brought Him victory, and His own righteousness having the Spirit
without measure sustained Him. [17] For the Lord put on righteousness
as a breastplate or coat of mail, and salvation as a helmet upon His head;
He put on garments of vengeance for clothing and was clad with zeal and
furious divine jealousy as a cloak.

The secret things of the Lord belong to Him and he will not share that glory with His creation, to include any of the angels.

There is a verse and an application I believe that we could apply.

1Kings 8:39 Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)

The application or purpose is to seek His glory alone knowing he gives us the desires of our hearts as we are drawn by and through His word to do His will by faith.

But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Note... the vain repetitions, in respect to repetitions is not the subject matter that is vain . When we cry out over and over it is expected . What is vain is that men look to have their faith in that which is seen. That would be taking the name as to the authority of God in vain. It would violate the commandment below,I believe.

Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

It's not a personal opinion but based on scripture.

You must know that not everything we'd like answered is in either the O.T. or the N.T. John 21:25 clearly states this.
For instance, you won't find the doctrine of the Holy Trinity in the bible, however, it is in there.
It's there because it's inferred - and that's all we have to go by.

It's also be inference that we can safely say that satan cannot read our minds.

First of all, he is not omnipresent. He cannot be everywhere at one time and uses fallen angels to help him do his work. This can be confirmed in Job 1:7 when the LORD asked satan from whence he came and satan replied "From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it." NASB
It's repeated in the N.T., see 1 Peter 5:8 - "the devil prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." NASB

So we see that the devil is not every place at the same time as is God because only God is omnipresent.

The devil is also not omniscient. He doesn't know everything - including our thoughts which only God knows.
God created the angels. Angels do not have all the qualities that God has, they are created beings. Lucifer, or satan, was an angel and so has the qualities of an angel, not of God. Only God is omniscient.

So, as you can see, the bible is very clear that GOD can read the thoughts of man but is silent on the same ability for satan.

Many times SILENCE is the proof that the thought or concept never entered into the minds of the inspired writers of either the O.T. or the N.T.

Also, I'd like to add that God can read our thoughts because the Holy Spirit indwells believers - He is a part of us.
Satan does not dwell within a person unless that person is possessed by satan.

Just an aside:
Satan is Hebrew and means Adverary
Devil is Greek and means Accuser

And, if fact, all he could do is accuse us of something already done - which is visible and known - or tempt in different ways until he finds the one that works the best (through trial and error I suppose).

There is nothing in our past or present that the devil can use against us if we continue to follow His Word.

However, to answer you - yes, the negative is always more interesting. In movies, for example. Is it more interesting to watch the nice guy do nothing or very little, or try to figure out why the bad guy is the way he is and what motivates him to be so?
We expect the positive, we don't expect the negative. The negative makes us question more. Life questions. When all is good we go happily on our way and notice nothing. When things are negative, we're forced to stop and take notice and come to some conclusion that we can live with.

Apparently you must agree somewhat with the above if YOU state the O.P.'s question was asked in fear.

I DO think it would be a pretty scary thing if satan COULD read our thoughts.
So fear might very well come into the picture in Lolokgal's question.

Another reason why it cannot be that our minds could be read by him. God would never allow him to have such power.

Surely they knew the words written of Christ to come, yet didn't know the meaning of those words. They were denied the knowledge they might have wanted from the disciples. Even if Satan could detect our thoughts, he might not be able to interpret them accurately. Again, I answer no to the OP question.


Someone might correctly say Jesus knew the thoughts of men while he was yet fully human, as in Luke 6:8 & 6:22. So we know both the Father and Jesus the Son of God could and can read the thoughts of men, while we can't rightly declare Satan, a fallen angel, can do the same. There simply is no scriptural support for that assumption, while there is ample evidence for God downward to men and probably of angels who are above men, but below Jesus.

The only other "knower of our thoughts" according to scripture is our own spirit within us, according to verse 11. Reading on I see I also have the Holy Spirit in us, who informs me of the spiritual things of God not known to me naturally.

I believe Satan would delight for a Christian to give thought to the possibility of one's thoughts to be open to him. That should be put in a list of torments, curses, from which we have been redeemed.

Instead, the human brain is amazing, storing memories of a lifetime, some too remote to recall, others however old and petty, recalled at inconvenient moments now. It's simply how the brain works, not a trick or power of Satan.

I will submit to God continually, resist the Devil continually, and he will always flee from me under those conditions as given in James 4:7. I will not give him time or opportunity to discover whatever of me that is washed by the blood and word of God. I will guard my tongue, letting it reveal the thoughts of my heart so that men, demons, and God all can know the thoughts I want known.

Satan is the accuser of the brethren of Christ, but God doesn't condemn us for our mere thoughts he always knows, so what significance is there to Satan's knowledge of them? If there is hidden sin and he makes it known to other men, that could be harmful, but ought not be if we are quick to repent and confess our faults to someone we can trust to minister to us. If Satan knows of an old sin, doesn't Jesus already know of it? If it is submitted to Jesus, why let it continue to persecute us?

If it seems like Satan keeps bringing up old sins, consider it might be our own conscience bringing us to realizing we need to make it right through Jesus, and maybe to to tell those thoughts to someone who can help sort it all out, with fasting and prayer perhaps, so there's an end to the torment.

Be sure a gossiper is not chosen as a confidant!

Ahhhh, someone else finally knows! That's a precious thought to end the bad.

Is it better to think about Jesus dying on the cross or is it better to see an empty cross and think about him rising from the dead?

Do we think about ourselves being tortured and dying on a cross or do we think about dying and rising to life with Jesus?
Any negative thing you think is more interesting must come from your lack of experience in the matter.

All you say above is true. Christianity is positive and we're to think of it in a positive way.
It isn't every religion's God who let's Himself be known by His creation: Man!

Jeremiah 1:5 tells us that God knew us before we were born.
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart;

And Isaiah 49:16 tell us that God holds us in His hand.
"See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands"

So, yes, Christianity is very positive.

And we should also think of the positive in life - although not always easy.

The only other "knower of our thoughts" according to scripture is our own spirit within us, according to verse 11. Reading on I see I also have the Holy Spirit in us, who informs me of the spiritual things of God not known to me naturally.

I believe Satan would delight for a Christian to give thought to the possibility of one's thoughts to be open to him. That should be put in a list of torments, curses, from which we have been redeemed.

Instead, the human brain is amazing, storing memories of a lifetime, some too remote to recall, others however old and petty, recalled at inconvenient moments now. It's simply how the brain works, not a trick or power of Satan.

I will submit to God continually, resist the Devil continually, and he will always flee from me under those conditions as given in James 4:7. I will not give him time or opportunity to discover whatever of me that is washed by the blood and word of God. I will guard my tongue, letting it reveal the thoughts of my heart so that men, demons, and God all can know the thoughts I want known.

Satan is the accuser of the brethren of Christ, but God doesn't condemn us for our mere thoughts he always knows, so what significance is there to Satan's knowledge of them? If there is hidden sin and he makes it known to other men, that could be harmful, but ought not be if we are quick to repent and confess our faults to someone we can trust to minister to us. If Satan knows of an old sin, doesn't Jesus already know of it? If it is submitted to Jesus, why let it continue to persecute us?

If it seems like Satan keeps bringing up old sins, consider it might be our own conscience bringing us to realizing we need to make it right through Jesus, and maybe to to tell those thoughts to someone who can help sort it all out, with fasting and prayer perhaps, so there's an end to the torment.

Be sure a gossiper is not chosen as a confidant!

Ahhhh, someone else finally knows! That's a precious thought to end the bad.

Thanks, Fran. Imagine the party crash of all time, Jesus entering in, walking up to Satan, taking the keys of hell and of death from him!

Whatever powers Satan had until then were demolished then. He has no self-willed power over us, though reigns through deceit even now. Be not deceived, Church! Fear not, even those haunting memories. Cast them down in the name of Jesus, be free from them.
