Hi all,

I have truly underestimated this humble grain - until now.I have started incorporating it into my diet for the following reasons:

1)It is very inexpensive.1 large bag costs less than one Australian dollar and by the time I have boiled it - I probably have 6 -9 small meals. This reason alone makes it a winner!Who wouldn't rather spend money on other things?
2) All the fibre keeps you regular. This is good news for the colon and for keeping it clean - oats literally act like an intestinal broom as they bulk up the stool and draw out unwanted matter from the intestine.
3)Oats have many B- vitamens which are good for the skin and nervous system.
4) It is especially recommended for those with high cholesterol. The oats collect cholesterol in the blood and drag the excess out of your system. Also , don't quote me but it may even reverse high cholesterol.
5) Oats keep you fuller for longer.Who wouldn't rather be doing other things than cooking and eating all day?

So there you have it - a somewhat sketchy explanation of why oats are soooooooooo good for you.Happy eating! :)

Also oats are glutton free. But be careful eating to much of any grain(s). They can have a adverse effect over time.

I'm thinking you meant "gluten free"... LOL

Pure oatmeal does not contain gluten. However, most oatmeal brands on the market today are not pure & contain oats that have been cross-contaminated with a tiny amount of wheat, barley, and/or rye. So check the label.

Hey Allen, I've tried various gluten free flours but I'm not crazy about any of them. I used to be an awesome bread baker but since going gluten free, I have not found a suitable flour. The bread turns out heavy & often gummy.

Is oatmeal the same as porridge oats?

Just wondered as I often have porridge and add slices of banana, blueberries, strawberries,
honey etc.

Weetabix is great too with fruit, especially the chocolate variety. Yum

Hahaha that made me laugh, it's really delicious if you make it the right way.

The porridge that is, not the face mask!

Had some this morning (I'm trying to lose weight the Richard Simmons way, sort of), Nope I couldn't choke it down and I put milk and brown sugar on it.

How abt arrowroot? That is very rare here really, i only know such light cookies are sold by some manufacturers and they cost. There is so much available in ur parts, so perhaps u can get that. And idk if it would work with breads.

Although oats are not grown here, we did have some while growing up, so it is familiar food and i liked it. I esp try to incorporate it in baking, and just remember it is loaded w/ Mg, B6, Mn, Cu, thiamin and P, and just a gram of sugar per serving.
Sorry i tend to abbreviate when i can... that's manganese, copper and phosphorus.

I had a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast yesterday. Added some blueberries. It's not so bad if you think about it.

Oh you don't know what your missing, make it in a pan
on the stove/oven don't microwave it. Use semi skimmed milk not water.

Add honey and slices of banana and other fruit during the last minute or so.
You get all the natural sweetness of the honey send fruit blended into it.

yum :)

Tourist & I would love to use our oven but the outer glass door exploded little glass pieces all over the place and the oven wasn't even on. So we are going to be replacing the stove very soon..... Didn't realize how much I use the oven until I can't.... I miss baking.... and oven cooking...
