the unholy alliance between the trump campaign and the republican party machine is coming into focus at the republican national convention in cleveland today...

in spite of running a campaign against the so called 'establishment'...the trump campaign has now enlisted the 'good old boys' of the party machine in an effort to utterly crush all dissent at the convention with a ruthlessness that so far has not even been directed at hillary clinton yet...

it started even before the convention officially opened...when the rules committee passed a series of unprecedented rules without debate...silencing dissenters on the committee with procedural tactics...

while the most well known of the dissenters on the rules committee were those of the anti trump 'free the delegates' movement...and the media has been lumping all dissent at the convention in with the 'never trump' movement...it was hardly just them that got steamrolled...here are some highlights...

...not only a rejection of the 'free the delegates' proposal to recognize all delegates as unbound under existing rules...but an entirely new rule explicitly asserting that delegates are bound to vote in accordance with their state's apportionment of delegates based on caucuses and primary outcomes... the last time the delegates were explicitly bound by a specific provision in the convention rules was in 1976...when a court found it to be an unconstitutional restriction on free speech...

...a proposal to close the early primaries so that only registered republicans can vote in 2020 was rejected by the rules committee...conservative former virginia attorney general ken cuccinelli was the highest profile supporter of this proposal... during emergency negotiations laughably blamed on a 'broken printer' it had seemed that RNC chairman reince priebus was prepared to compromise and provide incentives for early states that closed their primaries...but when the committee was reconvened priebus rejected all of cuccinelli's proposals outright...and most of the rest of the committee obediently followed suit...

...a rule allowing the republican national committee to change any rules at will at any time between now and the 2020 convention was passed by the rules committee... this rule is understood to grant unprecedented power to party bosses...

again although the media has been inclined to mistakenly lump all dissent against the new rules in with the 'never trump' camp...in fact this new rules package is an affort to conservative grassroots activists everywhere...and represents a massive power grab on behalf of the party machine...

the new rules package was scheduled for presentation to the convention for approval today... under existing rules a 'roll call' vote on the new rules must be held if a majority of delegates from seven states petition for it... the required signatures were collected...

the convention secretary reacted to this development by literally -hiding- in order to avoid having to receive the petition...security guards were posted in between the secretary and those attempting to deliver the petition... the petition was finally delivered when a third party was convinced to deliver the petition to the secretary...

the tone of the convention became clear when reince priebus appointed mitch mcconnell...yes -that- mitch mcconnell...acting convention chair to the expected chorus of boos from delegates...

when the time came for the rules committee to present its new rules package...a voice vote was substituted for the roll call vote... as a result the convention degenerated into boos and dueling chants... the chair was then vacated for no reason...which conservative utah senator mike lee recognized as unprecedented and well out of order...

during this time 'whips' from the trump campaign and the republican party machine circulated...working to get delegates to withdraw their signatures from the petition for a roll call vote...'almost physical' intimidation was reported on the part of these 'whips'...

deputy chair steve womack then returned to the stage and asked for a repeat of the voice vote...he declared 'the ayes have it' although this was not clear from the volume of the responses... in response cuccinelli ripped off his convention badge...tossed it on the floor...and walked out...

the delegation from utah was then recognized...and they too requested a roll call vote... the deputy chair responded that enough people had withdrawn their signatures to disqualify three of the states that had originally presented the roll call petition...

the entire colorado delegation then walked out...followed by a large portion of the iowa delegation... inexplicably unbeknownst to the iowa delegation...their state is rumored to have been one of those that withdrew from the petition...

the convention was then gaveled into recess until tonight...

during the recess the following happened...

a major donor and fundraiser for trump...'trump victory' committee member gary emineth...resigned in protest over the roll call debacle saying 'you don't do this in america!'

party bosses have also refused to release the names of any delegates whose signatures were supposedly withdrawn from the roll call petition...or even the names of the three states subsequently removed from the petition...

the reason why this looks so bad...and why the uproar at the convention now goes far beyond the 'never trump' delegates...is because of the way the party machine is going about things on donald trump's behalf...

in spite of running against the 'establishment' for virtually the entire primary campaign and beyond...the trump operatives and republican party 'good old boys' have joined forces and sent a clear message that this convention belongs to the party machine...

moreover...in spite of the endless calls from party bosses for 'unity' behind trump...as well as trump's constant complaints on the campaign trail about being treated 'unfairly'...these same people insist on the tactic of -outmaneuvering- their opponents with methods frequently designed to gratuitously poke dissenters in the eye rather than allowing them to simply lose the old fashioned way with a vote...

the reliance of this unholy alliance on strongarm tactics to silence all dissent accomplishes nothing other than to cast a dark cloud of illegitimacy over this convention and its nominee...

a minority of primary votes consisting of the 'alt right' fringe...liberal democrats taking advantage of open primaries...and a compliant news media donating $2 billion in free publicity...does not constitute 'the voice of the people'

steamrolling over elected delegates and ramming things through the convention without a vote...that's what utah calls 'the voice of the people'...

and yet another reason not to trust the candidate he prefers...

Probably the only part of the Convention that I'll take to watch is tonight around 930 est and that's just because the speaker will be my local senate candidate who prior to this race was an unknown on the national front.

i guess utah also thinks that 'the voice of the people' was calling for party bosses to be able to change any party rules at will at any time between now and 2020...

because that was one of the new rules in the package that was passed without a vote...

trump haters don't want to make America great again
and apparently trump supporters don't care about having a legitimate primary election ever again...

So Rachel is being critical of Trump because he and the party are cooperating. It is like saying Jesus was a hypocrite because He decided to honor the Jewish traditions of the time. Like waiting until 30 to start His ministry.

And then He took up with a band of 12 sinners.

Rachel's argument makes absolutely no sense.

"A cry is heard in Ramah--deep anguish and bitter weeping. Rachel weeps...refusing to be comforted..."

really? man you Trump haters are something else. you guys are getting as bad as the crybaby democrats
let me make this simple for you...

the rules package passed by the trumpist-RNC alliance at the convention today grants party bosses the right to rewrite the party rules at will at any time prior to the 2020 national convention...

this means that if the next national republican primary season isn't going the way the party bosses wants it to go...they can change the rules during the primaries...or even -after- the primaries are all over...to make the results come out the way they want...

this is a -horrible- rule that should be a red flag and a major deal killer even to those who aren't in the 'never trump' crowd...but the trumpists and the party machine saw to it that it wasn't even put to a vote... probably this was the party bosses' condition for uniting behind trump...and a sign of how trump would govern...making 'great deals' that benefit him but ripping off americans at the most fundamental level...

apparently none of this matters to trumpists though...they will tolerate any wrong no matter how egregious for the sake of trump...

what this really says is that they have made -donald trump- the lord of their life...

your version of my argument makes no sense because it is a 'straw man' argument...

i am being critical of this corrupt convention because both trump and the party bosses are collaborating to steal all legitimacy from the process both now and for years to come...

yes jesus chose twelve sinners to be his apostles...that isn't even remotely parallel to what happened in cleveland today... what happened at the convention today would be like if jesus had made a deal promising to let the pharisees oppress israel as they saw fit if they anointed him king instead of herod...

Hey Rachel, just vote for Hillary.
Personally, I could care less if they get rid of the primaries and caucuses all together. I am sure there's a huge expense to the tax payer in having primary elections all over U.S. Territory. The parties can come up with their own candidates. If independent candidates want to run, there is a way for them to get on the ballot too.

you must have missed my #neverhillary comment above...

honestly it would be better if they -did- abolish primaries than reduce them to the complete farce that these new rules will permit...

They are allowed to take a roll call type voice vote, according to the rules, or don't you know that. The 7 state requirement was not met. The one that makes it possible to do a written tally. Your just upset because now they can't delay the convention by a day. They were not going anywhere with it anyway...your just grasping at straws, woe-man.
