There is no doubt we are a spirit, we have a soul and we live in this body on earth.
This is certainly one interpretation. Now each time you see the word spirit, replace it
with emotions.
Now the term soul appears to be a common term for the essence of a person outside
their body.
Therefore I will not keep silent; I will speak out in the anguish of my spirit, I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
Job 7:11
My soul yearns for you in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for you. When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness.
Isaiah 26:9
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Thess 5:23
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Heb 4:12
If the soul is your essence and your spirit is how you feel about things, it makes sense.
What has helped me is to realise words are practical approximations of objects, actions
meanings. They are approximations and are just useful.
Some have talked about people having 5 parts, body, soul, spirit, mind and heart.
Now heart appears to be a word to talk about what is in the core of you, what
you feel and react without any defence in the way. But your heart is not separate
from you, it is part of the whole.
I find heart a useful term when describing your inner self. Jesus uses it in terms of
forgiving from the heart, to love God with all your strength
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
Matt 22:37
It gets complicated.
