If you don't mind sharing, how many calories were you having? I tried counting but I think I went too low and it got me really anxious and tired. I was eating about 1,200.
I probably take about 1200 bites of food a day too, but its not helping.

I live with one.... Who is completely oblivious to that whole fact.

Serioulsy.. Even asking him to take the dog for a walk and I get the whole.. "It's too hot" or "I'm too tired". I swear.. Men sometimes!! :p

gotta love'em though! :)

I'm not entirely sure how this all started (didn't read back), but I've been overweight for a good part of my life (probably since about high school). When you just ate whatever, got out of sports (went to arts), and didn't really live an active lifestyle or exercise much...well, you tend to pick up the pounds.

Anyway, it was never morbidly so (like people making comments and pointing), but I long knew I needed to lose weight (even if just for my own good). Well, a little over a year ago I had an extensive health screening. They do it every year at our conference (Methodist) for pastor's and their families. It's about 3 dozen tests, so a little heavier than your average check up.

Well, the report that came back wasn't so good. Most of my numbers were either bad or out of the range altogether, and there were serious possibilities and concerns (given my family history) of heart disease/attack, stroke, diabetes, gout, and good possibility for stomach (or some other form) of cancer within the next 5-10 years following that projected track.

That was a bit of a wake up call/reality check for me, so from that day, I drastically changed my eating habits. I certainly am not starving myself (which makes you gain more weight, actually), and don't count calories or anything. What I did was simply cut out all the things which made my numbers bad:

Sugar, Salt, Complex Carbohydrates, Gluten, Red-Meat, & Certain Fats

Now, I didn't cut those out completely, but severely limited them. If something was over 10g of sugar, than it's a no no. If you don't want gout, then increase things like cherry juice (which lowers uric acid levels), and decrease things like beef (which raises them).

Bread is out, unless made in some measure without gluten (several kinds of tortillas, some flatbread & crackers, etc). Complex carbs need to go, so no potatoes, deep fried things, etc etc.

The list goes on, but basically it doesn't lower the amount of food you eat...just strictly limits what KIND of food you eat.


Well, I've never been much for submitting to the scale, but I did notice a considerable increase in my energy. I didn't feel as bad (sick or in pain). My clothes began loosening (some pants so much that I can't wear them without a belt, lol), and people commented on my looking better and thinner.

I had gotten sick a few weeks ago, and went to the doctor. They weighed me, of course, and I've come to find that over the past year+ of simply being mindful of what I eat (still not much increase in physical activity), I had lost over 30+lbs. I was once over 300lbs, and now weigh just above 270lbs.

So, for all those doctors and scientists over the years who have been harping on what you eat...they have a point...at least in my case.

So being short I struggle with everyday things in my life. 20% of my life is probably spent in grocery stores walking around looking for people taller than me because...help. Anyway, I can't see the top of my fridge to clean it. I've discovered an amazing use of technology to help with that. I use my camera on my phone so I can see the top of the fridge while using the long Swiffer thingie to clean the top. No need for a step ladder. #smartphonewin So, there is your helpful short person tip for the day. I think I'll probably meet my future spouse in a grocery store because I can't reach.

That's awesome! That's what I found too - Before even starting workouts... Just by initially changing what I ate, I started to lose some pounds. Diet is key. Hope you continue to have success with that.

Thanks, man! I feel like, when I stop working nights (and days...), then it will be easier to establish a consistent rhythm for sleep and exercise (which, from my medical days/knowledge, I believe should help tremendously).

I hope for your continued success, too. I'll be looking for you on American Ninja Warrior. ^_~

Not sure how the healthy lifestyle convo got started but I've been on a journey myself. I've learned that exercising is about SO much more than losing weight. I feel amazing. I've been workout out consistently for th last few months. My resting heart rate has gone from the mid 80's to the mid to low 60's. It's amazing how much better I feel. AND I've finally reached a point where I don't hate it anymore. I, actually, kind of love it.

I wish I had access to a D-WAVE quantum computer. It would make the task of running iterations on my fractal geometry equations a lot quicker process. Silly how even with modern powerful home PCs a person can still lock them into a 100% processing state for weeks at a time. Estimated time to completion for my latest proof - 13 days, 22 hours, 9 minutes

I've heard that weight loss is like 80% diet and 20% exercise. In my case, I believe it to be true. I did Hip Hop Abs, and other dance cardio workouts with strength training, but I never lost a whole lot of weight until I started eating less.

I agree. I look at exercise and the way to build strength and get my heart in shape, not a way to lose weight. The diet is most important for they part.

I agree. I look at exercise and the way to build strength and get my heart in shape, not a way to lose weight. The diet is most important for they part.
I also agree. And it works the opposite way as well (if a person, like me, is trying to gain weight). I was always extremely skinny growing up, so I started lifting weights when I was 15. My diet was always horrible, but I worked out very hard from when I was 15 years old until I was 40 years old (I am almost 42 now), but I only gained about 15 pounds of muscle during those 3 decades. During the last two years, I cut out some of that junk food, and started eating protein rich foods (like pasta) and I gained almost 20 lbs of muscle in just the last two years alone.

Diet definitely matters when trying to both gain or lose weight. Don't neglect the importance of it!

This is true. There's a saying among nutritionists that goes something like, "You can't exercise your way out of a poor diet."

I'm doing all the right things. I'm exercising more. I'm eating smaller portions. I'm eating more fruits and vegetables. I drink skim milk instead of whole, margarine instead of butter, low salt,

Watch the margarine. It may be better for weight watching but they're saying it's a lot worse for the ticker.
