I just got into some sort of argument with someone on Facebook because my answer to this statement:

Is 16.
And hers is 1.

What do you think?

2(2+2) is all a "number" that 8 will be divided by. Gotta do the math there first so we know what 8 is to be divided by.

When I was in h.s., we were taught "My Dear Aunt Sally" for the order of operations...X / + -

I just asked a teacher I know. 16 :)
Good stuff! Maths isn't my forte at all, but I remember BEDMAS from my school days. I just double-checked with my brother who is pretty good in the maths and sciences and he also says the answer is 16.

Why aren't we treating parenthesis like brackets?

Ahh, thanks! I was starting to think there were 2 answers to this lol. The FB page that posted it, majority of them answered 1 because, MDAS they say. But Google says 16  so I got confused.

I saw 16 in the replies, so I answered 16.

Answer this: Joan has 500.00, she wants to buy 250 watermelons. Then she wants to take a train from Mexico to South Dakota to meet her on line boyfriend of 8 year's, whom she's never Skyped, talked on the phone, seen a picture or emailed with. How long will it take Joan's train to scale Donald Trumps proposed wall?

16 is definitely the answer. It would be 1 if it was 8/(2(2+2)). Yep yep

I was taught PEMDAS. Parenthesis. Exponents. Multiplication. Division. Addition. Subtract. 2+2 is in the parenthesis, so that'd be 4. You times the other 2 with that now 4 which is 8. Then you divide 8 by 8 which gives you 1. That's if it's followed by PEMDAS.

Interesting. We use Brackets in Australia.
