Hugs from the side are just more appropriate in general, especially if you don't know the person(and even then it's questionable). You don't know what they're comfortable with. For me, if you're not my gf, mom, or dog, then you don't need to be in my personal space lol. A handshake would suffice.

Side hugs are awful. I don't just hug anyone eg. friends and family - no worries, but I love giving and receiving hugs.

Well, to address the obvious (C'mon, you know I ALWAYS do that.) we are mainly talking about male/female hugs here, right? I am pretty tall, so I do not contact the protruding parts of the female frontal anatomy when I hug. I am leaning, and therefore positioned above them, probably making it a bit more comfortable for both of us.

In truth, I find some men are more uncomfortable about hugging other men due to the homosexual overtones they might perceive are being broached.
Yeah, same here. I'm 6'5". And my friends and family are not.

I'm a hugger and I love initiating them, however some people I try to avoid getting a hug from them. I have one guy at work and we enjoy hugging each other and this side hug business doesn't work too well for us considering he's 6'3" and I'm 5'5" lol

Number of times this thread topic has popped up:

I'm keeping track of them all...

Anyway.. #Side hugs for days

I'm only gonna hug you close if... *thinks* You're my immediate family or someone I care about to a considerably greater extent than most.

Otherwise...I don't want you that close to me.

If you're going to go for the side-hug, just don't. I'd much prefer a handshake from someone who doesn't like hugs (or from acquaintances/strangers).

Some huggers should not be let out alone. Lol

You know the type who almost lift you out of your boots.

Well, I'm not going to hug you if you don't want me too. So you're safe.

Honestly, I dont even like hugging people that Im close to : p

Like my little brother is a hugger, and hugs every time we meet. And Ill hug him back and all with a smile on my face, but the entire time Im thinking "ah geeeesh you and your freaking hugs" : p

Theres such an awkwardness to hugs, like some people arent comfortable with it, and show it outwardly, so when you are in a group whos all hugging, and they force you to hug that person, it just feels awful : p Like you end up feeling like you violated them because of it : p

In general I just dont hug people if I can get away with it : p

Oh, except animals though, I hug my cats like every day : p

I never give side hugs, unless I'm standing somewhere which makes a real hug impossible ,sidehugs to me to are in the same category as a sloppy handshake :p

I'm not a hugger....esp if I don't know you, you will be hugging a wooden plank/board (me) and no hug will be reciprocated lol :)
