We carry the message to the alcoholic and to the addict who still suffers. The message is that they need God in their life. Haha, oh how they hate that. The wonderful thing is that it is not preached to them, not shoved down their throat in any way whatsoever. It is put forward as the solution while they are given full freedom to explore their God concepts and beliefs.
Meanwhile, they are encouraged to explore their history, their patterns, beliefs, behaviors, what works in their life, what doesn't, while they listen to others share their experiences, strength, and hope, as well as struggles, challenges, and suffering. It is a wonderful concoction! Some people confuse this permission to define God as they understand Him, equating it to being not God centered at all, when developing and maintaining an ongoing personal relationship with God is the very heart and core of the program, which came out of a Christian model based solidly on Scriptural principles.
Almost without exception those seeking help are enemies to God in their minds, but through a process of continual support and inspiration we hopefully all come to that place where we can see ourselves more clearly. Painfully clear. Now when I say I have the desire to stop using, it is not a desire to stop using mind and mood altering substances. I have already done that, with the help of God. I could not have done it without God! Now what I want to stop using is my character defects. I don't even have full willingness to do that yet, but I progress. Sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly.
