If the Ten Commandments are not written on our heart in the form that is in the Old Covenant - then what or Who is?

The ten commandments are really a manifestation of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. We are not made to eat from that tree - but of the tree of Life - which is Christ Himself. He is the Life!

What is this New Covenant that Ezekiel is prophesying about that was to come and now is here manifested in Christ's finished work on the cross and resurrection?

What is the Law Written on Our Hearts?

Six-hundred years before Jesus came, the prophet Jeremiah spoke of a new covenant that God would make with his people:

“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.” (Jer 31:33-34)

What is the law that God writes on our hearts and minds? Here are three things it is not:

  • It is not the law of Moses. As we saw in the last post, if God wrote the Ten Commandments on our hearts then Jesus died for nothing.

  • It is not a new and improved version of the law. It is not the new commands of Jesus or the New Testament. We cannot please God by keeping a new law any more than we could please him by keeping an old one.

  • It is not the knowledge of right and wrong that was bestowed upon us – against the Lord’s wishes – by Adam.

So what is this law that the Lord writes on our hearts and minds and embeds in our very being?

It is Christ Himself.

Let’s look at three things the New Testament says about the new law in our hearts.

1. The law of love

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. (John 13:34)

Under the old law covenant, love was demanded from you. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.”

But under the new covenant of grace, love is given to you – “As I have loved you” – and out of the overflow of Christ’s measureless love we are able to love others.

How does it happen?

God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (Rom 5:5)

God abundantly pours his love into our hearts by giving us the Holy Spirit, a.k.a. the Spirit of Christ. Do you see the difference between the old and new?

  • Under the old, the law was a rule for weak men to obey. Under the new, the Law is the Spirit of Christ given to us, loving us, and loving others through us.

  • Under the old, you loved others because you feared punishment. But under the new, you love because a Lover lives in you and it is his nature to love.

  • Under the old, you had to make an effort to obey. But under the new you have to make an effort to disobey. It’s a whole new way of life.

2. The law of the Spirit of life

It’s important that you understand the difference between the old law (a written code you can’t keep) and the new Law (Christ himself, living in you). Try and live by the old laws, as Paul did, and it make you miserable:

What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? (Rom 7:24)

Paul couldn’t keep the old law no matter how hard he tried. He needed a new law and that new law is a Who:

Who will rescue me…? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Rom 7:24-25a)

Do you see? The old law is a what; the new law is a Who. The old law ministers condemnation and death (2 Cor 3:7-9), but the new “law of the Spirit gives life” (Rom 8:2).

For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. (2 Cor 3:6)

Who gives life? Not a set of rules, but the Spirit of Christ within you. The new law is a Who.

3. The perfect law of liberty

James wrote of “the perfect law that gives freedom” (Jas 1:25), which can be contrasted with the law of Moses that binds (Rom 7:6). What is the perfect law that gives freedom? Well, what is the implanted word that can save you (Jas 1:21)? It’s not the Ten Commandments or the Bible. It’s Jesus, the living Word who sets us free.

The perfect law of liberty describes what Jesus has done (perfectly fulfilled or completed the law) and the fruit he will bear in our lives (liberty) if we trust him.

But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it – not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it – they will be blessed in what they do. (Jas 1:25)

Look into the mirror of Moses’ law and you will be miserable, for it exposes all your faults. But look into the perfect law which is Jesus and you will be blessed, for it reveals his righteousness.

“Don’t just listen but do what it (the perfect law of liberty) says” (Jas 1:22). In other words, allow the Spirit of Christ to convince you that in him you are righteous and holy.

Don’t walk away from the perfect law and forget who you are in Christ. Fix your eyes on Jesus. Look intently with an unveiled face and be transformed into his likeness.

The Law written in our hearts is Jesus

Jeremiah said those who had the new law written on their hearts would know the Lord and would no longer need others to teach them. This is describing your union with Christ. One with the Lord you have the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16). His Spirit dwells in you and teaches you all things (John 14:26).

The law of the Lord written into your members is your Father’s spiritual DNA. It is the seed of God birthed in you by the Holy Spirit. It’s Jesus Himself.

How do you know He’s there? Because you are a new creation with new hopes and desires. You no longer want to sin. Your desire is to love God and others and that desire has nothing to do with old rules written in stone.

Christian, you are who you are because Christ lives in you. He is the new law written, by God, in your heart and mind.

'Seen it all before..... poster becomes a Judiazing legalist. OSAS's & HG's come to the rescue & hijack the thread.

After 2 or 3 threads, HG's & OSAS's report legalist & legalist gets banned. HG's & OSAS's groups grow larger & more acceptable.

Eventually, that's all we'll have, HG's & OSAS's. Then Jesus comes to get His church, & HG's & OSAS's will still be in here arguing with somebody. They will totally dominate CC. They will have won, & the majority of their enemies will be gone.

I'd rather lose & leave with Jesus.:)

I would think a little more on this. The text says this:

Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

notice it says "I will put my law" who's law? God's law. Not a new law, not a law that no one knows. but the very law they all knew.

To have it on the heart means to keep it as seen clearly by Paul:

Rom 2:14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
Rom 2:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

Read the context how the Jews had the law and the Gentiles did not. But the Jews did not keep it while the Gentiles who did not receive it with Israel by nature do the very things contained in the law. That shows they have the law written on their hearts. The law in the hearts clearly means they by nature do the very things contained in the law.

Gentiles did it by faith.

to say that "the ten commandments are a manifestation of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil" is not only a lie - it is a very dangerous lie.
I hope you are prepared to answer to God, when young believers read this foolish propaganda.

The law displays both the knowledge of good and the evil that will come by either obeying all of the law NOT obeying all of the Law. The Law most definitely is eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The law is the knowledge of good and evil. Remember that the fruit of knowing good is on the same try as is knowing evil.

We were never meant to eat from that tree - that's why Christ could be the only One to fulfill all the Law. That is God's area. We were to eat from the tree of Life - which is Christ Himself.

We can trust Christ who is in us! He will be faithful to us!

The "law" or instructions of God are HIS knowledge of good and evil.
God told Adam - do not eat from that particular tree. (His knowledge)
Eve & Adam decided that they wanted to have their own authority to decide what is good or evil.
Can't you see that?

People who want to shun divine authority, and say they don't have to follow instructions of God,
THEY are the ones eating from the tree of knowledge of good & evil.

Yes and the fourth commandment is in respect to the other kind of law as ceremonial law used in celebrations anticipating the coming of Christ. All of the ceremonial laws were used as parables to include the furniture, lamps, breast plates, stones, tables etc. They all spoke as signs of the suffering of Christ before hand and the glory that did follow needed until the time of reformation .

We simply are not to judge one another as if shadows could produce the grace to pay the eternal wage of sin.

Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are "a shadow" of things to come; but the body is of Christ.ol 2:16

Has the refomation come? Is the veil still present? Are they still slaughtering sheep?

Those who refuse to rightly divide laws as to that which is ceremonial and used in parables to point to point as a sign to the suffering of Christ before hand as a way of preaching the gospel that must be kept separate from the moral laws needed to keep order on earth ,are hoping that shadows could confer saving grace needed to pay the eternal wage of sin.

They show they are not walking (understanding God) by faith just as Adam and Eve in the garden .They would be the same ones they say we need men to teach us, as the ideology of the antichrists.

I would be careful how you are using the idea of the law of God written on our hearts. Our hearts are simply a judgment hall. It either excuses us or accuses us .It is not a means of judgement as to whether a person has the faith of Christ or does not.

Hearts are deceitful and desperately wicked as in who can know it?

We do not have the faith of Christ in respect to our own hearts. The reason for the fall. Scripture identifies that as blaspheming the Holy name we are called by.

Men who have never heard the written law perish without it.

Romans 2:12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;

There is a big difference between following God and keeping His commandment and keeping the Law for one's Salvation.

We keep the Law because we are Righteous and follow God. Others keep the Law hoping by keeping the Law they then will be made Righteous.

very true!

Amen ...........We understand (walk) with God by the eternal, not seen and not the temporal ,after our own working experiences. No man will be found with a righteousness of their own-self, after a ceremonial shadow.

So much confusion.

What is written on our hearts is the law of love, which is the 10 commandments.

Only the Lord, No idols, No missuse of Gods name, Keep in rest, Honour one parents,
not murder, not adultery, not stealing, not lying against people, not coveting

Love God, love your neighbour, everything else comes from this.

The problem people have is simple. They look at their hearts and do not see love.
They have religion but no love.

They need to meet Jesus and the cross, up close and personal.

Our emotional lives are often so closed off, we are literally disconnected from who
we are inside ourselves. How can we know how to walk in the kingdom when we are
so closed down and disfunctional?

By learning how to obey, learning to do without asking why. The why will be answered
when we do, because in doing we become something different. The reason why we do not
do is because we do not want to change and have become so closed down and empty, it is
easier to stay here, because the pain of going somewhere else is too great.

And that is the lie we live with and will find any excuse literally to stay as we are.

So get real with God, get real with your heart, and start obeying.

Now does the above sound hard to keep.
To many they say this is impossible and yet they claim to have given up everything
to follow Christ. I would suggest they are actually lying to themselves.

The rich young man who came to Jesus kept this from a young age.
Jesus took this as was and said he lacked 2 things. Trust in wealth which he should
give up and follow Jesus. Both these things he could not do.

So equally those who come claiming faith in Christ but cannot keep the simple
commandments are failing at a basic level they are refusing to come to terms with.

Rom 7:12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

wow so something that is just Holy and good is now equated with the knowledge of good and evil... amazing, please show me in Genesis where this tree or its fruit are described as the law is here.

your words right, ok so then kindly explain why you and others choose to judge concerning this issue. have you not judged us as fallen from grace, or denying the Savior, or whatever other insults and negative comments you and others so readily employ? you know what why don't you reach out to others with a motive of genuine concern for their soul and pray the Holy Spirit will indeed lead and guide any who are in error that can lead to a false path, many christains claim this love but frankly the fruit shown stinks and is rotten.

I see it more as trying to understand or evaluate how to answer.. Only God can look upon the heart and judge.

have you not judged us as fallen from grace, or denying the Savior, or whatever other insults and negative comments you and others so readily employ?
I don't think falling from grace means one has lost their salvation .Denying His grace yes.

It’s not my goal to insult. That kind of debate is listed among the sins that have an eternal cost in regard to.. But negative comments as sarcastic words can be used as sarcasm. It’s just not in respect to believers. We all stand on the same fallow ground in need of a savior that will pay the whole eternal debt of sin..

Christ would use words as sarcasm (to tear at the flesh as a thorn in the flesh as with Paul in order to prick his conscience.)

We are told to add a little salt in our speech which speaks of His judgment according to His measure of faith..

He also performed that kind of sarcasm in order to help the apostles know how important it was to study to learn how to find the spiritual meaning of parables to help us understand the true meaning of the us from those who went out from us. .

The apostles thought it was in respect to their flesh as a unit seen gathering together in respect to their Nazarene denomination. .They were not walking by the faith that comes from seeing God by faith, the unseen. As soon as they did not understand they went searching for an alternative outward form to put their faith in. They reasoned among themselves after the philosophies of men leaving Christ the word of God, the one source of Christian faith out of the way of reasoning by it alone. .They had puffed themselves up above that which is written.Forgetting who makes men to differ from another?as in and what has a person received and if they have received ,while glory in the flesh as if we did not receive it freely with no cost on our behalf.

But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying. Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them “should be greatest”. Luk 9:45

A dispute the apostles had every time they did not understand the spiritual meaning of a parable. .

In the end of the teaching Christ in order to tear at the flesh (sarcasm) they still not understanding, Christ said as recorded.

Luk 9:55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
It is something we have no authority to do.

you know what why don't you reach out to others with a motive of genuine concern for their soul and pray the Holy Spirit will indeed lead and guide any who are in error that can lead to a false path, many christains claim this love but frankly the fruit shown stinks and is rotten.
It’s His fruit we eat of. When we get our focus off of Him it’s when oral tradition of men make his word to no effect.

We can see that again with Peter who lied and started a false rumor as an oral tradition of men, called a law of the fathers .

Christ who worked to make sure it did not last past that session said; if every time he worked to dispel the tradition of men like “who is the greatest” when they did not understand . The whole world would not be able to contain the books that could of shown him working to dispel the law of the father as mere commandment of men

Peter getting his eyes off Christ as looking for fruit from men as commandment of men attempted to stack sides the intention of the rumor. The fruit of jealousy.

What I find as different is that Catholicism thinks it is supporting the oral traditions of men.

Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen. Joh 21:20

Well I am still not understanding how one the 10 commandments can be ruled as a ceremonial law... theres no place in the whole big bible where this is done, seems mans understanding is put in place of plain commandments taught in scripture.

If you choose not to regard the commandments that's certainly your choice but please don't try to arbitrarily say this or that is a ceremonial law so it doesn't apply, many have done this but none can back up that statement with scripture in its proper context. all I see is scriptural gymnastics. I can make the bible say anything I want, that doesn't make it valid.

the term "ceremonial law" was probably made up by some proud xtians who could admit we have been tricked.
