So I been to an AG Pentecostal church all my life. They always taught me "Halloween is the devils Holiday". My church was 100% against celebrating Halloween and "forbade and prohibited" us young children from ever participating in it. I honestly never had a problem with it, I watch scary movies and would of always have wanted to go trick or treating. However I know some Christians celebrate it because like me they don't see it as that big of a deal and they don't do it with the intent of "celebrating the devil". Seriously you're dressing up in silly costumes asking for candy. So I just want to ask, which side is right or wrong. Or is there a line in the middle? I understand other Christians have slightly different beliefs then my church, but I never celebrated it because I was told since a young age never to do so, but I do see Christians here who say they have. I's fine just confused as to what the real answer is to this Halloween thing.
Halloween to me has always been very obvious. All I needed to do is look at what is depicted on that day. Is there anything Christian about the principles of halloween? If you look up the history of the jack o lantern and sam hain you will probably laugh but it is what is actually the reason for halloween.

Here is an interesting statement from

Halloween, Samhain and Jack o' Lantern | Field Notes | The Journal

And just as the Yule log reminds us of the pagan roots of Christmas, our carved candlelit pumpkin, the Jack o' Lantern, is born of an earlier tradition. The story goes that Jack was a ne'er-do-well hard drinker, whose misdeeds precluded happiness in the afterlife. Staggering home after a boozy night, Jack was ambushed by Old Nick himself. "Follow me to purgatory," he ordered. Jack complained that he would need a stick "from yonder sycamore" if he was to walk all the way to hell. Grudgingly, the Devil climbed the tree to break off a branch, at which Jack trapped him by quickly carving a cross in the bark. So a deal was struck: Jack would free him if Satan promised to not claim his soul. When Jack died, the Devil kept his word but instead tossed him a blazing lump of coal straight from the fires of hell. It being a cold night, Jack put the coal in a scooped-out turnip for warmth and light. And today, Jack and his lantern still roam between heaven and hell seeking a place to rest.

Thus the ridiculousness of halloween.

I know everyone has different views on the matter. :) And no offense, but it's none of your business how I'm going to glorify God on Halloween. I may just forego watching scary movies and read my bible instead. :)

Oh I wouldn't concern myself with it, but if you want to come into a thread repeating the same thing and making an argument or a claim about something, then any member can make it their business to ask you to back yourself up/illustrate your point, otherwise don't bother putting it on the table to start with. Congrats though, that sounds like an awesome idea, let us know what you read and got you inspired that day if you like, I'd be interested to hear.

I haven't made any arguments about Halloween, other than saying how I, like many others have said, will or will not celebrate the day.. :)

The discussion has evolved a bit beyond this for quite some time now, I'd encourage you to the reading.

Maybe you should give her one, gb9.

I have one, but thankyou for the concern, much appreciated.

You've repeated several times, I think approximately four now, how no one is going to take your candy from you and you mentioned at the outset of the discussion you'll be watching scary movies on the day. If you make it about God, I've yet to see one single idea from you how you believe it does and what you're going to do to celebrate Him in instead.

If you think that glories God, if that's what interests you, then that's your right to do all that, some of us just have different beliefs on the matter.
where is all that coming from?

she is obviously joking!!

lighten up!

smile!

So you have a problem with him bringing up something old to discuss in the present? Interesting.

People eat candy, dress up, watch scary movies, EVERY SINGLE DAY. It doesn't have to be a holiday or special occasion to dress up or eat candy or watch movies.

lol, I'm not sure if this is supposed to be satire or a genuine misunderstanding but no. lol I'll try and elucidate for you. It's encouraging a member who seems to have seen one thing exclusively for the sake of a claim, to look through 6 pages and read the developed arguments and experiences to gain a broader perspective on what a few members have actually partaken in with the discussion.

I have read many of the posts in this 12-page thread. :) Some members share my viewpoint, and some share yours. We ARE entitled to our individual opinions, are we not? After all, opinions are the stuffing of discussions. :) It is up to each person as to how they will, or will not, celebrate a certain holiday.

I wasn't actually referring to you in my last post, sorry for the misunderstanding. Moving forward, yes i'm in agreement with this.

Thank you for this. I do eat candy but casually throughout the year although I know I should stop (my teeth got messed up but it's better now). Basically you confirmed why I want to abstain from Alcohol and like they say "don't play with fire".

You're welcome, so glad it reached you.

bottom line:
does anyone think that JESUS would partake of such?

we, in our own personal opinion think that He would not...
and so our desire is to follow what we think He would do - about and on this subject...
quite simple really, but to each his own and to each, Jesus' own in their hearts, and not
the 'world's heart'...we pray...

Jesus "partook" of many undesirable things.. He drank wine at a wedding. Sat and talked to a prostitute.. even did miracles on the sabbath.. While he probably wouldn't dress up or watch movies, He WOULD find some way to bring glory from it to God.. JMO
