Using the lord's name in vain is becoming out of control in this society

Yes. Ive heard Jesus' name used as an expletive several times in movies and television. I can see how in movies they can say what they want but prime-time television should be more sensitive. Whats incredible is if they made a reference to allan or mohammed there would be an outrage from the muslim community and even death threats. Im not saying christians should do that but its interesting that its considered OK to offendchristians.

Yeah your right there Consumed. Bit by Bit all traces of Christianity is being eroded from government here. next they will want nativity plays banned from schools. Funny enough, the worst enemies to Christianity in the UK is not Muslims, but the 'Humanist association'. they want things like sunday school banned because it indoctrinates kids, and the kids have no say, things like that.

I agree with u Eugenius. This has been such a bother to me since i realised that i was taking the Lord's name in vain and it really hurt my heart that i use to sin in such a way and didnt know whilst being a christian. Its hard for me to get ppl to stop saying it around me but what i have done is to stop watching a movie or program that says the Lord's name in vain. Its hard but its a step. Next i want to stop a conversation with whom ever if they wont acknowledge that they arent to do that while speaking to me. I told a few ppl that its the same God we call on when we are sick or is in trouble so we shouldnt be using His name with out reverence and honour. Lets us pray for us all because some of us are so blind and cannot see that what we are doing is hurting our merciful God. We need to tell our friends, families and everyone we speak to thats its wrong if they say it because sometimes they just dont know.

It doesn't really bother me that much I try not to but its a habit, but I do hate when people tack on a cuss word to his name. Cussing isn't the best thing to do anyway and adding God into it won't help lol

Everywhere you go, EVERYONE says, "like oh my god!!!111" And other similar phrases. Personally every time I hear it, I shudder. I sometimes do it, but I force myself not to, and so do it only on very rare occasions when something bad has happened and I can't control myself.

But people in modern society, (especially young people) say it every 5 minutes, for no reason at all. I picture God as saying, "Leave me alone already, you don't even believe in me, stop saying my name". LOL.

Anyway, do people agree?

While saying OMG is not good, I believe what the bible really means is not to use God's name which is the word "Yahweh" without upmost respect and dignity. In translations the word LORD in all caps refers to this name. They did not say Yahweh, instead they chose to say the word LORD out of respect. It's not good to use the word God loosely, but I just wanted to reply with a little deeper clarification on what God's name REALLY is.

I do not consider a person saying OMG as the lords name in vain. I see a person takes the Lord's name in vain when they use it to get them what they want. Such as manipulate and control people using his name. I also see it as an intent of a person to fulfill a vain purpose. However...I can feel for those sensitive individuals who feel it as an offensive remark. Though to them they might note that: OMG can also just mean -this is something I say in place of roll my eyes and look at my fake nails.

But I am so happy we talked about this. Now we can address the individuals who are using the Lords name to manipulate and control people on a larger scale. Like totally focusing out...

These posts are along the lines of something I was pondering mentioning in this thread - but had not yet done so - and that is another type of taking the Lord's name in vain.

I am much more commonly guilty of "taking the Lord's name in vain", by repeatedly claiming to be a believer in Christ and yet walking around a total hypocrite. In my past years of striving to keep the Law, I claimed that I was a "True Christian" and my hypocrisy made Christ look like a fool continually.

That is taking the Lord's name in vain, and I am more guilty of that sin than most.

Yes, my friend and I have this joke. Every time someone says, "OMG" especially stupid teenage girls, we reply with, "Holy ghost of Karl Marx". "Oh sweet mother of Hitler". And things along those lines.

"Oh sweet mother of Hitler" sounds good, but I don't know how to interpret "Holy ghost of Karl Marx." That sounds like a mockery of the Holy Spirit which surely is no better. Even saying "Holy Cow" or the like I think can be offensive to the Spirit.

Sometimes I think the expression, “Oh, my God!” can be an emotional outburst. Once I was on an icy road and nearly lost control of my car and exclaimed, “Oh, my God!” out of fear.

But I do agree with you. People will start sentences with the Lord’s name, such as, “God, it’s hot out!” which I think is painful to the Lord.

Your outburst, IMHO, can be categorized as an exclamatory prayer - or better yet - a spontaneous prayer of thanksgiving for having been delivered from danger: a mini-psalm, if you will.

You are right quest. I found when I drew nearer to the Lord, when I would say holy cow... absolutely I felt a conviction from within that this was a sin and grievous to the Lord.
