I rely on God for the inspiration. Then I apply some perspiration in studying what God has laid on my heart. After that comes application (If I can't apply the message to my own life, then it may be the wrong message). The next step is supplication. I ask God to bless the message, the deliverer of the message and the hearers of the message.
I never write out a sermon in advance. I only put down the scriptures and a few notes. The delivery of the message is probably the hardest part for me because I have a great fear of public speaking. I have to totally rely on the Holy Spirit for the words and the the power to speak.
I leave the outcome to the Holy Spirit. I have only preached to a "normal" congregation once in my life. My congregation consisted of alcholics, drug addicts, ex-cons (and some criminals) prostitutes and street kids (some were gang members).
31 people came to the Lord and were baptized in my first two years as a pastor.
I give God all the glory for the work He has used me for. I now await His opportunity for further service.
In Christ,
John
